Traveling alone in Laos 47th day,

interesting Laos trip

From Phu Kun (Luang Prabang Province)

to Samlua (Hua Pan Province),

I traveled about 400 kilometers by bus.

Phu Khun is like the gateway to north-central Laos, Vientiane Province is up to the south, Vang Vieng and the capital Vientiane are in the south, and Hanoi is connected to Hanoi in Vietnam if you go northeast.

The border cities of Xieng Quang and Samrua
were waiting, and to the north were Luang Prabang, Udomsai, and Pongsali, which are connected to Kunming, China, and to the northwest, Luang Namtha, which leads to Myanmar, and Bo Keo and Sanyaburi, which lead to Chiang Kong and Chiang Mai in Thailand.

Therefore, Phu Khun is a transportation hub located in the north-central part of Laos, a three-way city located on a ridge at an altitude of 1.100 meters, but it was like a gateway to the north-central part of Laos.

However, when I first planned this trip, I just put the map on the map, and from here I was going to go through Sieng Quang and Samrua in the northeast, turn left to Pong Sali in the north-central part of the country, and then go south again to Udomsai, but according to the reliable local information
that I can find here in Phu Cun,

The road to and from Samrua is only a single road, and it is impossible to cross from Samrua to Pongsali, and in the middle of the road there is a large river blocking the road, and the road is cut off, and the mountains are high and difficult, making it almost impossible
for cars to pass.

There were many places where the distance between private houses more than 100 kilometers was. However, I believed in one map that was not very certain, and that was that for me, a foreigner, to travel
on foot was, in a word, to die.

After much deliberation, I decided that I didn’t need to walk back and forth on such a dangerous road, so I thought it would be better to take the long-distance public transportation to the border between Laos and Vietnam to reach the northernmost point and then walk out only when I came out.

In the end, I decided to change my strategy by walking back to Phu Kun and then going back to Luang Prabang, and I decided to take a long-distance bus to Samrua first.

The bus to Samrua came in and announced its departure soon after taking a break for breakfast, so the problem was that if I missed Yonom, I would have to wait for more than half a day, so I decided to go to Samrua anyway, so any further delay is a luxury.

I had no choice but to get on a long-distance bus to Samrua. And according to the information, this section is 1.000~2.000 meters above sea level, and it continues with mountain roads such as Death Rally with steep slopes and bends.

The buses with large backs had to go around
the river like a squirrel, so the bus could only run 20~30 kilometers per hour.

It takes about 15 hours or more by bus. Of course, it’s a long distance that makes you feel cramped, but at least it’s such a long-distance bus, so it’s essential to prepare a quick drink and snacks. So I had no choice but to flounder even more.

First, I hurriedly bought a typical meal of Lao people’s travel, two bamboo rice and a bottle of drinking water, at the stall in front of the bus stop, and then the long-awaited long-distance bus to Sam Rui departed.

Fortunately, the bus was a new V.I.P. bus, but the speed was only 10~30km, and it was driving acrobatically to the side of the cliff on the ridge. Still, since it is a slow speed, I feel a little safe, I thought the comfort was reliable, so I decided to trust the V.I.P bus.

And I found out that I had to eat at least a thick meal on the bus, but I was sorry because the street vendor had prepared two bamboo rice and drinking water in advance, otherwise there was no rest stop
in the middle, so I would be starving all day.

However, when the bus had been running for about 5 hours, the bus suddenly stopped, and thanks to several accidents, I couldn’t help but look at the driver’s seat with the eyes of a rabbit who was
surprised to see the lid of the pot in my chest.

Fortunately, the bus only stopped for a while to relieve the physiological phenomena of the passengers, and those who needed to take care of it for a while were told to solve it quickly.

There were few rests stops in the middle of this section, so passengers were allowed to stop the car and see what they needed to do if they wanted, except for the place where they stopped to eat.

The bus was parked on a cliff road, but the road was a little wider, and one passenger was jumping out.

The problem was that it was in broad daylight, and the surrounding area was open, so no matter how much I looked around, there was no place to hide. But who could stop me in a hurry?

Men had to watch from the front and women from
the back, and there was no other choice but to accept the inevitability of a little uncomfortable exposure to each other.

The problem was that the women would be a little embarrassed, but when I finally shut up, I realized that I should sell my worries. The Lao traditional skirt “Thin” was enough. After all, the young ladies didn’t have the right place, so they seemed to be patient,
promising the next time.

The ladies who looked a little older were sloppy even though they covered them with skirts, but the younger ladies stood and looked at their errands like embarrassing  dancers.

“No, a woman could stand and do her business?” I couldn’t help but wonder, of course, it couldn’t be the same, but when I witnessed a real scene, I realized that the method was the same, as the saying goes, “If you don’t have teeth, you live with gums.”

First, I pulled up the long skirt I was wearing above my knees, bent my knees a little awkwardly, and put one hand on my knees in the same way as the starting posture of long-distance runners, and spread the front of my skirt wide with the other hand.

As the amount of work decreased, he gradually changed to a standing posture and finished his errands cleanly. I witnessed a scene I never thought of, and I was amazed that I never imagined that
their long skirts would be so useful.

I couldn’t see whether they were wearing or taking off their panties, but I wondered what kind of imagination they were having, and I just laughed at the slight breaking news. (Hah. Work. Hah~)

Here, I think I should explain the traditional long skirt (“sinch” in Lao language) of Lao women, but first,
as a little sub-address, Laos is still quite conservative about women’s dress and hair.

You can’t wear a knee-high miniskirt or any pants, and dyeing your hair or perming your hair wavy is a bit of a flexibility and exception, but if you assume that it’s still prohibited by law,

In fact, it is forbidden to always enter government offices, especially in big cities such as Vientiane, where you can see the police cracking down on the streets when international events are about to take place.

Of course, I asked them for a special reason, but they just laughed and didn’t give me a lot of confidence, so I could only guess that it was for customs and traditions, but anyway, all the women in Laos grew up wearing the scene from such a young age.

It is used in a variety of ways, and if you force yourself to compare, it is like the skirt jeogori of Korean hanbok, but it is wide and long without a slit on the side, and it is practically more spacious than a hanbok.

It resembles a sack with only the bottom and top open, and the rest is wrapped around the waist and folded forward and fixed with a belt, etc., and it is indispensable from everyday clothes such as simple
colored work clothes to outdoor clothes and even clothes with colorful gold leaf and embroidery.

Laos still lacks public amenities, so women can conveniently use it to change clothes and take a bath anywhere. They all move to the neck and chest, and they use it so skillfully,

It was common to use it very technically so that it was not exposed to important parts at all without difficulty. In fact, while traveling in Laos, anyone can go anywhere, at the end of the day’s work around 4 p.m.

Children and adults can be seen taking a bath together at the stream in front of the village or at the communal well, and women can take a bath together without any hesitation.

I also thought that if I lost my job, I would squint and look at it carefully a few times, but unfortunately, I was not exposed at all, and I was disappointed many times. (Caution I admit that I didn’t have any rip-offs…)

Anyway, on this long-distance bus, I was able to see that Lao women can boldly taste even on uncomfortable long-distance trips thanks to traditional skirts.

I thought it was a bit of an interesting bus trip. (ha, ha)
