On the 43rd day of my trip to Laos,
I was immersed in the fresh scent of Laos (1)&(2)
※Today I walked 30km
from Vang Vieng to Nong Kham.
Vang Vieng is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Laos, and even though it was early in the morning, I saw a lot of foreigners. It is about a three-hour drive from the capital city of Vientiane and is surrounded by mysterious caves, picturesque mountains, and lush valleys and forests.
Due to the good surrounding conditions and living environment, such as the roads and the language of accommodation, it is a place visited by many foreigners and tourists. However, I refused to go around, and even though I had been staying for three days, I was stuck in the corner of my room, and I sorted out the backlog of travel notes.
I was busy posting on the internet, so I was doing nothing but going back and forth to the internet café. However, the cost of using the internet was so high that I was already spending two weeks’ accommodation for three days and a blog for the internet.
After paying all the time, I had no special income right now, but my expenses were increasing, and my pockets were clearly tight, and I had no choice but to go out on the road, as if I was running away with a little regret.
It was just too expensive, it felt like something had been stolen, and the price of all Laos has risen in recent years due to the rise in the price of oil, but it has also been falling day by day, including the depreciation of the Lao currency ‘kip’ against the US dollar.
Add to that the rent of famous tourist spots, and I couldn’t help but think that I wanted to stay longer in Vang Vieng. Speaking of which, let’s talk a little more about the exchange rate, Nowadays, the value of the won against the US dollar in Korea is more than 1:1.500.
While it is rapidly soaring day by day, the value of the US dollar against the Lao kip is about 1:8.000, which is about 30% depreciation in the last 2~3 years. In the end, the won went up and the kip went down, and the cost of living in Laos is rising fearlessly.
The rise in the cost of living, which can be felt with real skin, is so high that it is difficult to express it in words. For example, if you sent 100.000 won in Korea, you could get 100 kip in the past, and 1.000.000 kip in Laos.
At that time, a meal could be settled for about 10.000 kip, but now if you send 100.000 won in Korea, you can get about 70 dollars, and if you exchange it again in Lao kip, you can only get 500.000 kip. On top of that, a meal now costs about 20.000 kip.
Also, when I was traveling in Laos, the biggest expense I had to pay was at least 50.000 kip, which is about 10.000 won in Korean won.
Now, the cost of living in Korea is not so much different, and the previous ratio of 1 (Korea) to 8 (Laos) has been reduced to about 1 : 5, making it a place where Korean tourists have to pay a lot of money. In short, I would have to spend more than twice as much as I used to to do to continue this trip.
Anyway, he soothed his bitter heart, and Vang Vieng had no choice but to get out anyway, and even if he was struck down a mountain valley, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but at least he had a good heart, and he could suffer less, and if it was a reason, it was a reason.
As if to soothe my heart after a while. The silhouette of Vang Vieng emerging from the morning mist was so beautiful, and the superb view of the surrounding mountains and waters that touched the end of my gaze even if it was a send-off,
As if to fuel my regrets, I was getting more and more beautiful in my vision, and I was so glad that the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the wind made me feel so refreshed.
The familiarity of Laos with nature played a part in making my gait light, especially Vang Vieng’s landscape paintings, which can be said to be ordinary landscapes that anyone can feel anywhere in Laos.
When I put it in a single photo, I was able to confirm that the beauty of nature that is differentiated is more than enough to decorate a page on my travel bucket list. As I walked through the wonders of nature, I lost track of time,
The sun was already above my head, looking down upon me, and before I knew it, the navel clock was past noon, and after twenty-five kilometers, the majestic mountains of the north, in fact, appeared and waited for me.
Perhaps it was an unspoken reality that from here on, it continued to climb north to Luang Prabang, leading up to a steep mountain road that climbed and descended at least 1.000 meters above sea level. Even if I didn’t, I took a break from walking involuntarily for the past few days.
To return to the original full-fledged Tubuk in the future, I had decided that it would be appropriate to rest at Nong Kham, just as a warm-up today, and only after crossing the 800-meter-high altitude in front of me, I was already tired at the end of this pass.
However, the steep mountain road in front of him was not easy, and he put his last strength into every step, and he just focused on climbing and climbing again, and since the high ground was right in front of him, he shouted, “Knock and it will open.”
After a frantic climb for a while, I finally reached the summit and breathed a sigh of relief as I was about to go downhill, but to my delight I was greeted on both sides of the road by freshly shipped high-cold seasonal fruits from a nearby orchard, tempting me.
Even more so, the menu consisted of pineapples and bananas, which were my usual favorites. However, when I chose a pineapple the size of a skull and a bunch of 15 bananas, I insinuated that the price was no, well! All of them cost only 8.000 kip (about $1.5 USD).
I had no choice but to stop on my way to go to Mt. Sansugap, but I said, “It’s a big deal,” and I looked around and said, “If it’s the same price, I’ll wear a red skirt,” and I set out to find a suitable stall.
풋풋한 라오스의 향기 속으로 (1)&(2)
※오늘은 방비엥에서 농캄까지, 걸어서 30km를 갔다.
방비엥은 라오스에서도 손 꼽히는 유명 관광지 답게, 아침 일찍 인 데도 외국인들이 많이 눈에 띄었다. 수도 비엔티엔에서 자동차로 3시간 정도의 거리로 신비스러운 동굴과 그림 같은 산세, 그리고 싱그러운 계곡과 숲이 함께 하고 있으며,
도로와 숙박 언어 등, 주변 여건과 생활환경이 좋은 관계로, 많은 내 외국인, 여행객 등이 찾는 곳이다. 그러나 나는 돌아다니는 것도 마다하고, 벌써 3일을 머무르면서도 방구석에 쳐 박혀, 밀린 여행메모를 정리하여,
인터넷에 글을 올리는데 바빠, 그저 PC방을 오가는 것 밖에는 하는 일이 없었다. 그런데 인터넷 사용료가 어찌나 비싼 지, 벌써 3일치 사용료로 2주일치의 숙박비를, 인터넷 사용료로 블로그에 쏟아 붙고 있었다.
그렇게 꼬박 꼬박 지불하고 났더니, 인터넷이고 블로그고 여기 더 있었다간, 당장 특별한 수입도 없는데, 소소한 지출만 늘어나고 있어, 주머니가 거덜 날 형편이 분명, 조금은 아쉬운 마음으로 바삐 도망 치기 라도 하 듯, 길을 나 설 수밖에 없었다.
그저 너무 비싼 요금에, 무언가 꼭 도둑맞은 기분 같았는데, 요즈음 석유 값의 상승에 따라 모든 라오스의 물가가 오른 것도 있지만, 미 달러화에 대한 라오스 화폐 ‘킵’의 절하까지, 하루가 멀다 하고 떨어지고 있었고,
거기에 유명관광지의 텃세까지 더해지고 보니, 내 형편으론 방비엥에서 더 머무르고 싶다는 생각은 요망사항 일 수밖에 없었다. 말이 나왔으니 환율에 대해 조금 더 언급하자면, 요즈음 우리나라의 미 달러화에 대한 원화의 가치는, 무려 1:1.500 이상으로,
하루가 다르게 급격히 치솟고 있는 것에 반해, 라오스의 킵에 대한 미 달러화의 가치는 1:8.000 정도로, 최근 2~3년 동안 무려 30%정도가 절하됐다. 결국 원화는 오르고 킵화는 내렸고, 더 더욱 라오스의 모든 생활 물가는 겁 없이 오르고 있어,
실제 피부로 느낄 수 있는 생활물가의 오름세는, 말로 표현하기 어려울 정도로 대단히 높게 나타나고 있다. 예를 들어 한국에서 100.000원을 송금하면, 예전에는 100달러 정도로, 다시 라오스 킵으로 환전하면 1.000.000킵을 받을 수 있었다.
이때, 한끼 식사가 10.000킵 정도면 해결 가능했는데, 하지만 지금은 한국에서 100.000원을 송금하면 70달러 정도로, 다시 라오스 킵으로 환전하면 500.000킵 밖에는 받을 수 없다. 거기에 지금은 한끼 식사가 오히려 20.000킵 정도여야 해결이 가능하다는 것이다.
또 한, 내가 라오스여행을 하면서, 가장 큰 지출을 할 수밖에 없는 숙박료도, 중소도시를 막론하고 대부분의 게스트 하우스 숙박료가, 최소한 50.000킵으로 한국 원화로 환산하면 10.000원 정도였는데,
이제 우리나라의 물가와 그렇게 크게 차이가 없이, 종전의 1(한국) : 8(라오스) 정도가 1 : 5 정도로 줄어 들면서, 한국인 여행객의 경비가 만만치 않은 곳이 됐다. 한마디로 예전보다 두배 이상의 지출을 해야, 이 여행을 계속 할 수 있다는 것이었다.
어쨌든 씁쓸한 마음을 달래며, 어차피 내친김에 방비엥은 빠져나올 수밖에 없었는데, 그렇다고 산골짝이로 쳐 박힌다고 해도 별수는 없겠지만, 그나마 인심만이라도 훌륭해, 맘고생은 덜 할 수 있음이란 것이, 이유라면 이유였다.
잠시 후 그런 내 마음을 달래어 주기라도 하 듯. 새벽 안개 속에서 제 모습을 들어내고 있는 방비엥의 실루엣은 너무나 아름답기만 했는데, 배웅이라도 나와 내 시선 끝에 와 닿는, 주변 산수의 절경들은,
못내 아쉬움을 부채질이라도 하듯, 갈수록 더욱 아름답게 시야에 파고 들어오고 있었는데, 정말 다행인 것은, 적당히 걸을 만한 태양의 온기와 바람의 서늘함까지, 걷기에는 더없이 안성맞춤, 한결 상쾌함을 더해주고 있음이었다.
그렇게 자연과 함께 전해 주는 라오스의 친근감까지, 나의 걸음걸이가 경쾌 할 수밖에 없게 한 몫을 단단히 거들고 있었던 것인데, 특히 이런 방비엥의 풍경화는, 누구나 라오스 어디를 가도 느낄 수 있는, 평범한 전경이라고 할 수도 있겠지만,
막상 사진 한 컷에 담아 보면, 차별화된 자연 그대로의 아름다움이 분명, 여행 버킷 리스트의 한페이지를 장식하고도 남음이라고, 확인까지 시켜 주고 있음이었다. 그렇게 대자연의 경이로움에 빠져 걷고 있 자니, 시간 가는 줄 모르고 있었는데,
벌써 태양이 머리위에 올라서서, 나를 내려다보고 있는 걸로 보아, 어느새 배꼽시계는 정오를 지나고 있었고, 그렇게 25킬로미터를 지나면 서부터는, 명실상부한 북쪽의 웅장한 산들이, 또 한 무더기 나타나 나를 기다리고 있었는데,
아마 여기 서부터는, 북쪽 루앙프라방까지 계속 오름세로, 최소 해발 1.000미터를 오르고 내리는 가파른 산악도로로 이어진다는 것을, 무언의 현실로 설명하고 있었음 같았다. 그렇지 않아도 요 며칠 본의 아니게 걸음걸이를 쉬었던 관계로,
앞으로 원래의 본격 뚜벅이로 다시 돌아가기 위해선, 오늘은 워밍업정도로, 저 앞에 모이는 해발 800미터의 고지만 넘어 농캄에서 쉬기로 함이 적당하다고 판단하고 있었던 참이었기에, 오늘의 피곤함은 이 고갯마루가 끝, 벌써 여유로움이 눈에 선하기만 했다.
하지만 당면한 가파른 산길도 호락호락하지만은 않았는데, 마지막 안간힘을 한걸음 한걸음에 불어넣으며, 그저 열심히 오르고 또 오르는 것에만 집중, 고지가 바로 눈앞에 있으니, “두드려라 그럼 열릴 것이다” 를 외치며
한동안을 정신 없이 오르다 보니, 마침내 정상에 도착, 드디어 내리막 길로 접어 드는 가 싶어 안도의 한숨을 내쉬고 있었는데, 반갑게도 길 양 옆으로, 마침 인근 과수원에서 막 출하된, 고 냉지 제철 과일들이 마중 나와선, 나를 유혹을 하고 있었다.
더 더욱 그 메뉴가 파인애플과 바나나로, 내가 평소 좋아하는 과일들이었다. 그런데 슬쩍 내머리통만 한 파인애플과, 한 뭉치에 열댓 개나 달린 바나나를 선택, 넌지시 가격을 물어보니, 아니 글쎄! 모두 8.000킵(약 미화1.5달러)밖에 안 한다는 것이었다.
이게 웬 떡인가 싶어, 삼수갑산을 갈 망정 가던 길을 멈출 수밖에 없었는데, “거두절미” “두말하면 잔소리” 라고, 아예 두리 번 두리 번 입맛까지 다시며 “같은 값이면 다홍치마”, 적당한 좌판을 찾아 나서고 말았다.
