On the 41st day of my trip to Laos, 

the
nightmare ride is not over yet! (3)&(4)

 The bottom line was that since I had entered without permission, I would have to pay a minimum fine and other punishments, but I would still take into consideration the normal injuries caused by the car accident and let me go, so I had to get on the bus as soon as
possible before I changed my mind.

 The booklet also stated, “All visitors to Saisombun, if they enter or exit, must take a detour by car on the safe road to the west, but only from Vang Vieng in the northwest or Vientiane, the capital in the southwest.

 Of course, the situation in the communist
and socialist countries of the past has given us an idea, and it is enough without further explanation, but if we go straight to the northeast, we will take a detour to the northwest to Xieng Guang, which is only 110 kilometers away, and then through Ta Hua, Vang Vieng, Kasi and Phu Kun.

 Thinking about going around about 300
kilometers, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for myself. So, I avoided the policemen’s glare, pacing around the Siri terminal several times for no reason, but again, I couldn’t find much of it.

 Also, when I checked the condition of the
old car on the way to Xieng Quang, I realized that it was serious and that I had to take that car, and there was no reason to hesitate, as if I was going to relive the nightmare of a few days ago, which had not yet healed.

 In the end, there was only one way, and I
had no choice at all, the only way to get out, the only way to get there, and it was still a better bus than the bus to Xiengguang, so I had no choice but to move on to the bus that was in a hurry to leave.

 After a while, I took a bus to Vientiane via Ta Hua in the west, but what the hell! When I got on the bus, I was alreadywaiting for me on the  bus by two plainclothes policemen armed with rifles and pistols, who had taken over me.

 He made sure I was going out of the
Saisomboon without any problems, and as I rode with him to report it, he was escorting me and scaring me and warning me. Oh my god! He was forced to travel on a bus accompanied by a bodyguard he didn’t want.

 I gave up on the way I was going, and I had
to turn around for a long time as if I was about to be kicked out, but the bus was still in better condition than the accident car I took when I came from Longshan, and after the bus left, the road conditions seemed to be a little better.

 I managed to feel a little relieved. However,
as soon as I got out of the scarred saisom, as expected, there were a thousand precipices on the side of the road, and the acrobatics began much closer than I expected.

 As if walking a tightrope, the bus wasrunning  dangerously over it. On the contrary, it occurred to me that the road from Longshan to Saisombun was still in good condition, except for the area where the accident occurred.

 Also, the bus I am riding now is also a bus, but it was just a shell, and it was a used car that was produced in Korea a long time ago, and it was more than 30 years old, which is not found in Korea today, and it was amazing to see it rolling.

 I was so anxious that I couldn’t see the boundary of the surroundings that were so beautiful, and there were only “more and more mountains”, only the mountain and the mountain. However, at first glance, it was still overwhelming how much the surrounding
scenery was,

 The beauty of the rocky cliffs and valleys, along with the majestic mountains, must have been unimaginably beautiful, so I couldn’t help but squint. While the bus was running like that for about three hours,

 Siri, clenched in fists with anxiety, and couldn’t keep his mouth shut, just screaming in horror and exclamations of hell! Suddenly, the bus roared.

 Didn’t the bus seem to pull to one side and come to an abrupt stop? Suddenly, I was dizzy, and the dust from the dirt road rushed into the car, and I was trapped in a burrow, like a frightened rabbit
covered in smoke.

 In other words, no, well! The wheels of the bus were caught by the sharp stone roots that had broken off the dirt road, and the tires were torn. I know that if the front wheel of a car goes flat, the car may roll over or fall depending on the speed.

 The front tire of my bus had been torn off and I had to come to an abrupt stop, so I don’t need any further explanation as to how dangerous it was. Luckily the
bus was going downhill and slightly uphill, so it slowed down.

 Oops! It was a terrible accident that had been averted. The bus driver and all the passengers were speechless for a while, their expressions blue and tired, and they just stared at each other in the distance, confirming that they were fortunate in their misfortune.

 After a while, the driver yelled at everyone to get off, and I was like, Oops! I was mesmerized in front of the
Nether Road, but then I came to my senses, jumped up, and  got off the bus as if I were running away.
When I checked the condition of the tires, alas! It’s not just a punk

 The tires were completely torn apart, and it was creepy, but the problem is that there are still about 40 kilometers to go until Taha, and it’s already past 1 p.m., so if you don’t take this bus, you can walk through this mountain.

 It’s not enough time to get to Tah’a by the end of the day, let alone by nightfall, and I’m going to get back on that bus that is replacing the severed tires with spare tires, because of the nightmares that have been going on.

 I was tormented by this and that, thinking about it without any particular idea. About an hour later, the bus had finished changing its tires, and the driver was yelling at everyone to get on the bus because it was done.

 As if I had no other choice but to be dragged back in, I got on the bus like a restless poopy puppy, and the bus that didn’t care about my feelings started running without saying a word.

 Still, despite my fears, I was able to breathe a sigh of relief and feel a little relieved when, contrary to my
worries, I had come down from the top of the cliff and was driving on a flat road that led to a relatively good asphalt pavement.

 After a while, my vision suddenly popped up, and as if I had just passed through the mountains, a vast dark blue lake appeared in front of me. But how big of a lake it was,  it seemed more accurate to describe it as a sea of water than a lake.

 Originally, there was no sea in Laos, but it stretched to the vast horizon, as if there was a sea suddenly. On the
surface of the water, the waves swayed like waves, and the sun slid and sparkled on them.

 There was nothing to be seen except for the occasional fishing boat floating in the water. No, the sheer mountain wasn’t enough, and now they were pouring water all over it, seducing me by
“giving me medicine and giving me sickness.”

 I just felt like I was spitting out celestial beauty from the earth to eternity, but I was stunned, “Oh my God,
there was such a spectacular sea of water in Laos…… I really couldn’t say anything more.”

 As if to wash away the nightmares, the bus circled along the northern upstream of Namm Lake, the largest man-made lake in Laos, and finally arrived at Ta Hua, a three-way street to Vang Vieng and Vientiane, and the beautiful nightmare of the trip to Laos was finally coming to an end.

 yes! Like the flowing river, from high to
low, I had to live in a pure way, and no matter how adventurous I was in traveling, I felt that I had paid the price for being greedy and resourceful more than necessary .

 But on the other hand, I still feel that it wasn’t so bad for all the hard work I had to put into it, and I was able to meet the highest peak in Laos, Pubia, and I even smiled with remorse, and I felt like I had gained something like that.

 And anyway, when I woke up from the nightmare in which I fell asleep, I realized that it was probably my own thing, and that it was already a memory, a longing for Sasom that I would never forget.

아직 끝나지 않은 악몽속의 질주! (3)&(4)

결론은, 나는 허가 없이 들어왔으니, 마땅히 최소한의 벌금 등의 처벌이 불가피 하지만, 그래도 교통사고로 인한 상처의 정상을 참작, 그냥 내보내 줄 터이니, 맘 변하기 전 빨리 버스를 타고 나가라는 것이었다.

 역시 책자에는 “모든 사이솜분의 방문객 등은, 어떻게 출입하는 경우에도, 무조건 자동차로 서쪽의 안전 도로로만 이용하여 우회하되, 서북쪽의 방비엥이나 서남쪽의 수도 비엔티엔 쪽에서 만 통행할 수 있다고 쓰여 있었다.

 물론, 그 동안의 공산주의 사회주의 국가들의 상황으로 미루어 짐작 켠데, 더 이상 설명을 안 해도 충분이 알 수 있었지만, 다만 여기서 동북쪽으로 곧바로 간다면 고작 110킬로 떨어진 시엥광을, 서북쪽으로 우회 하여, 타흐아와 방비엥, 카시와 푸쿤을 거쳐

 약300킬로를 돌아 갈 것을 생각하니, 미련이 남을 수밖에 없었다. 그래서 혹시나 싶어서 경찰관들의 눈총을 피해서, 괜 시리 터미널 주변을 서성이기를 여러 번, 그러나 역시나 그래 봤 자 별 뾰족한 수가 없음이었다.

 또한 얼핏 시엥꽝행 낡은 자동차 상태를 확인해 보니, 무엇보다도 역시 그 꼬라지가 심각, 저 차를 타고 가야 한다는 것은, 아직 아물지 않은 며칠 전의 악몽을 또 다시 재현할 것만 같아, 망설 일 이유조차 없음이었다.

 결국 방법은 오직 하나뿐, 나에게는 선택의 여지가 전혀 없는, 유일한 출구로 지정된, 교통편만이 기다리고 있었고, 그래도 시엥광행 버스보다는 괜찮아 보이는 버스였기에, 하는 수 없이 발걸음은, 출발을 서두르고 있는 버스로 옮겼고,

 잠시 후 서쪽에 있는 타흐아를 거쳐 비엔티엔으로 가는 버스를 탔는데, 아니 이건 또 뭐 람! 막상 버스에 오르고 보니, 이미 버스안에는, 나를 인수인계를 받았다는, 소총과 권총 등으로 무장을 한 사복 경찰관 두 명이, 나를 기다리고 있는 것이었다.

 정말 내가 문제없이 사이솜분 밖으로 나가는 지를 확인하여, 보고해야 하기위해 함께 타고 가면서, 에스코트를 한다고 하면서, 은근슬쩍 겁을 주면서 경고를 하고 있었다. 아이고! 졸지에 원하지도 않은 보디가드까지 동반한 버스여행을 하게 된 것이었다.

 그렇게 가던 길을 포기를 하고, 막상 쫓겨나듯 그것도 한참을 돌아서 가게 됐는데, 그래도 롱산에서 올 때 탔던 사고차량 보단, 조금은 버스 상태도 양호했고, 버스가 출발하고 나니, 도로 사정도 조금은 좋은 편인 것 같아,

 그럭저럭 조금은 안심을 할 수 있었다. 그러나 상처 뿐인 사이솜분을 벗어 나면서부터 는, 예상대로 길 앙 옆은, 역시 까마득한 천길 낭떠러지가 이어 지고 있었고, 생각보다 훨씬 아슬아슬 곡예가 시작되어,

 외줄타기라도 하듯, 그 위를 위험천만하게 버스는 달려 가고 있었다. 오히려 롱산에서 사이솜분으로 올 때의 그 도로가, 사고가 났던 그 지역을 제외하고는 그래도 양호 한 편이었던 것 같았다는 생각이 들고 있었다.

 또한 지금 타고 가는 이 버스도 버스라 고는 하지만 껍데기만 그럴 싸 했을 뿐, 한참 오래 전 한국에서 생산된, 지금 한국에선 그 모습을 찾아 볼 수 없는 30년 이상 된 중고차를 수입, 수리를 한 버스였는데, 참으로 굴러가는 것이 신기 하기만 했다.

 도무지 불안하여, 너무나 아름다운 주변의 경계가 전혀 눈에 들어오지 않고 있었는데, “갈수록 태산” 이라고, 오직 산 넘어 또 산 뿐이었다. 그러나 얼핏 얼핏 그래도 압도적인 주변 경관이 얼마나 상당 했는지,

 기암 절벽과 계곡의 아름다움은 웅장한 산세와 함께, 가히 상상을 불허할 정도로 아름답게 눈가를 스치고 있음은 틀림 없었기에, 최소한의 곁눈질은 아낄 수가 없었다. 그렇게 3시간 정도를 버스가 달려 가는 동안,

 웃기지도 않게 시리, 불안함에 주먹에 진땀을 잔뜩 쥐고는, 한편으론 입을 다물지 못하고, 그저 두려운 비명과 놀라움의 감탄사를 연발하면, 천상과 지옥을 오가고 있었는데, 그런데 이건 또 웬일! 갑자기 달리던 버스가 굉음을 토해 내면서

 버스가 한쪽으로 쏠리는 듯 싶더니 급정거를 하는 것이 아닌가? 갑자기 순간 아찔하였는데, 비포장길을 달리던 먼지까지 온통 차안으로 몰려들면서, 순간 굴속에 갇혀, 연기라도 뒤집어 쓴 것처럼 놀란 토끼가 되어 버렸다.

 내용인 즉, 아니 글쎄! 비포장길에 깨져 나온 날카로운 돌 뿌리에 버스바퀴가 채여 타이어가 찢어졌다는 것이었다. 모름지기 달리 던 자동차의 앞바퀴가 펑크가 날 경우, 그 속도에 따라서 자동차는 전복되거나 추락 될 수 있다고 알고 있는데,

 지금 달리던 내 버스의 앞 타이어가 찢겨져 급정거를 했으니, 얼마나 위험 했는지는, 더 이상 설명이 필요 없음이었다. 다행히 버스가 내리막길에서 약간 오르막 길로 올라가면서, 속도가 줄어 들었기 망정이었지,

 아이고! 소리가 절로, 끔찍한 대형사고를 모면했던 것이었다. 버스 기사는 물론 승객들 모두가 새파랗게 질린 표정들로 한 동안 아무 말도 못하고, 그저 멀뚱멀뚱 서로 바라만 보면서, 불행 중 다행임을 확인하고 있었던 것이었다.

 잠시 후, 운전기사가 모두 하차 하란 소리에, 나 역시, 아차! 황천길 앞에서, 넋을 놓고 있다가, 그제야 정신을 차리고 벌떡 일어나, 버스에서 도망치듯 내렸는데. 막상 타이어상태를 확인해 보니, 아뿔싸! 단순 펑크가 아니라

 타이어가 아예 너덜너덜 찢겨져 있어, 정말 소름이 오싹할 수밖에 없었는데, 문제는 아직 타흐아 까진 40여 킬로미터가 남아 있고, 벌써 오후1시가 지나고 있어, 만일 이 버스를 타지 않고, 이 첩첩 산중을 걸어서 간다면,

 아무래도 해질녘까진 고사하고, 오늘 중으로 타흐아까지 가기에는 시간적으로 무리이고, 그렇다고 절단 난 타이어를 스페어 타이어로 교체하고 있는 저 을씨년스런 버스를 다시 타고 가 자니, 연속되고 있는 악몽들 때문에,

 도저히 마음이 내키지 않는 등, 이 생각 저 생각에 시달리며, 특별한 묘안 없이 갈팡질팡 헤매 고만 있었다. 그리고 1시간쯤 지나 버스는 타이어 교체를 마쳤고, 운전기사는 다 됐으니 모두 버스에 올라 타라고 소리치고 있었다.

 다른 특단의 방법이 없는 나로 서도 어쩔 수 없이 다시 끌려 들어가 듯, 안절부절 똥마려운 강아지 마냥 버스에 올라타고 말았고, 그런 내 맘을 아랑곳하지 않는 버스는 이내 아무 말 없이 달리기 시작했다.

 그래도 우려와는 달리, 다행히 몇 굽이를 돌아서자, 생각했던 걱정과는 달리, 어느새 절벽위에서 내려와 비교적 괜찮은 아스팔트 포장도로로 이어진, 평탄한 도로 위를 달리고 있었음에, 비로소 안도의 한숨을 내쉬며, 조금은 안심을 할 수 있었다.

 그리고 얼마 후 갑자기 시야가 툭 터지면서, 언제 첩첩 산중을 지났냐는 듯, 넓고 검푸른 엄청 난 호수가 내 앞에 나타나고 있었다. 그런데 얼마나 큰 호수였는지, 호수라 기 보다는 물바다라는 표현이 맞을 것 같았다.

 원래 라오스에는 바다가 없는데도 갑자기 바다가 생기기 라도 한 것처럼, 거대한 수평선까지 펼쳐져 있는 것이었다. 수면 위에는 파도처럼 물결까지 출렁이고, 그 위에는 햇살이 미끄러지면서 눈부시게 반짝거리고 있었는데,

 온통 물천지에 간간이 떠있는 낚시 배 밖에는 아무것도 보이질 않고 있었다. 아니, 왕창 깎아지른 산만으로도 모자라, 이젠 온통 물까지 퍼 부어 놓고, “약 주고 병 주고” 나를 유혹하고 있었음 이었다.

 그저 지상에서 영원으로 천상의 아름다움을 토해내고 있는 것이 아닌가 싶기만 했는데, “세상에 라오스에도 이런 장관의 물바다가 있었 다니……” 정말 더 이상 할말을 잊고 기가 막힐 뿐이었다.

 그렇게 그 동안의 악몽들을 씻어 주기라도 하는 듯, 버스는 라오스 최대 인공호수 남름호의 북쪽 상류를 끼고 돌면서, 우여곡절 끝에 방비엥과 비엔티엔으로 향하는 삼거리 타흐아에 도착, 비로소 라오스여행의 아름다운 사이솜분의 악몽은 끝이 나고 있었다.

 그래! 저 흐르는 강물처럼, 높은 곳에서 낮은 곳으로, 그저 순리데로 살아야 함인데, 아무리 여행에 모험도 좋다지만, 필요이상의 욕심과 객기를 부린 죄값을 톡톡이 치렀다는 생각이 들고 있었다.

 하지만 한편으론, 그래도 사서 한 고생 치고는, 그렇게 나쁘지만은 않았다는 생각도 들면서, 라오스의 최고봉 푸비아를 만날 수 있었음에, 회심의 미소까지, 그런대로 얻은 것도 있었던 것 같았다는, 애써 위로까지…

 그리고 어쨌거나 졸지에 빠져든 악몽에서 깨어나 보니, 아마 그것도 내 팔자 거니, 벌써 모두가 추억이 되어, 언제까지나 잊지 못할 사이솜분의 그리움 이라고, 그날의 기억을 되씹고 있었음 이었다.
