On the 115th day of my solo trip to Laos, A Country with Transition to Status, Beginning a New Experience

Day 115 of Solo Trip to Laos, Beginning a New Experience

Today, I walked 20 km from Pakham to Feuang.

At some point, many small hills seemed to be clustering out in a cramped, delicate manner. Since I had no thoughts, I wasn’t very conscious, but as time passed, they approached me warmly, and I finally felt they were beautiful and noticed them.

Compared to the majestic mountains to the north, the beauty of these mountains seemed so charming, blending with small fields and winding streams that added charm, spreading out along the path I was walking.

As expected, with such beautiful scenery, it’s only natural that more people and more eyes will appear, and it seems we’re finally escaping the quiet atmosphere we’ve had for a while. Maybe that’s why I was able to walk lightly, and I arrived in Phang a bit earlier than I expected.

First, I needed to cool off the heat in my soles, so I went out to the stream to dip my feet, enjoyed a cigarette, and once again immersed myself in the surrounding scenery. But looking at the map, it was clearly a remote mountain village,

What I felt as soon as I entered the village entrance was that it looked larger than typical mountain villages, which made me a bit puzzled. But I later realized that this area was a place long ago during the French colonial era,

With the development of a famous open-pit gold mine, many people gathered here, leaving the remote mountain village and forming a mountain town. However, on the other hand, one thing I felt during my travels was,

Because the larger the village, where most people live, tends to be harsher, I couldn’t help but worry about that, given my current financial situation and that I was deeply worried about the village’s sentiment, even though my finances were almost out of reach.

Suddenly, the blue smoke he emitted somehow made me think it was a good thing, but just then, I remembered a part-time college student named ‘Noi’ whom I had met in Vientienne before. She remembered telling me that since my hometown is ‘Phuang,’ I should always be sure to hear this place whenever I pass by.

With the mindset of ‘If I fall into water, I’ll grab at straws,’ I took out my notebook and, with my eyes dazzled, found a phone number and called—but, well! “I’m not home right now, I’m in Vientiane.” Disappointed, I had no choice but to hang up.

I kept blowing out innocent cigarette smoke far away, searching for a breakthrough, but all I could do was feel like I could only face it head-on, just like I did before. Yes, as the saying goes, ‘Heaven helps those who help themselves,’ I kept my distance from the evil deeds I usually did,

I could only comfort myself by believing that heaven would never turn a blind eye to the good reality given to me and someone who had lived to the best of their heart. Then, a little while later, the phone rang, and an unexpected hand reached out—it was the voice of ‘Noi’ just moments ago.

“I’m not home, so I asked my sister for help,” so she said, “Don’t feel burdened even if I’m not there, just rest comfortably.” Since she couldn’t save face, she had no choice but to say, “Thank you so much,” and “I’ll be embarrassed to help you for a few days.”

After hanging up, a moment later, I saw a motorcycle driven by a lady with a copper tan and soon came up in front of me and stopped. Then, with a gentle smile, she said, “Sabaidi…” And so, my fateful encounter with Phuang could begin.

Noi’s house, located not far from the roadside, was just an ordinary two-story wooden house, but since it was home to only six daughters, the atmosphere was relatively clean and even warm, making me feel like I was next door.

At home, Noi’s parents, the youngest daughter attending high school, and the children of the second daughter who married nearby lived in and out of the family, moving between your home and mine. Noi was the fourth daughter, and all three older sisters had married off.

Noi and the fifth child are currently attending university in Vientiane, and Noi was a charming female student majoring in accounting. So, the first time I met Noi was when I was attending the National University of Laos to learn Lao,

One day, by chance, I sat at a table right next to Noi at the cafeteria in front of the school, and it was a chance encounter. Her calm voice and gentle expression matched her neat appearance, and somehow, I couldn’t just pass by, so even though I thought I was a bit careless, I deliberately approached her.

At that time, I suddenly offered a part-time job, and after several phone calls, the part-time job was approved during school vacation. For a while, I worked with Noi and was able to learn Laotian from him.

A little while later, my full-fledged trip to Laos began, and ironically, two years had passed, and ironically, I found myself at Noi’s house where Noi was gone. “What kind of connection is this…” Tossing and turning with all these thoughts, I couldn’t sleep, but as usual, the morning in Phang came back to dawn,

Receiving such generous hospitality, my body and mind, which had been exhausted, were soaked in a long-lost sense of leisure. However, as a day or two passed, I started to think that for me now, it might be a luxury, and as I prepared for a more intimidating trip to the city center,

While pondering a clever plan to solve my financial situation, I learned that a nearby Chinese-owned rubber plantation needed workers. Living with money was money, but if I settled somewhere after this trip, I would have to farm anyway,

I comforted myself by saying that a small farm was something I had always wanted to try as an experience and had no choice but to visit that farm. First, I met the farm owner and asked, “I’m a traveler and want to learn the job for a bit. Isn’t there a need for help?” I asked.

However, he stubbornly refused, saying, “We don’t need travelers who will stay for a short while.” However, since I wasn’t someone who would easily back down here, I said, “Honestly, I have no experience working on a farm.” “But I can work diligently for about a month.” He made these kinds of requests.

Only then did he show a slightly thoughtful expression and said, “Then I’ll provide room and board, but I can’t pay your salary.” “But seeing how you work, I can at least give you transportation expenses when you leave,” and with a look on his face, he told me not to ask for anything more and to decide whether to work or not.

I thought about it for a moment, but no matter how much I tried to explain, it would only make me feel pathetic, and in the end, there was no other way. Still, I couldn’t just rely on Noi’s house, so I decided to at least arrange my own room and breakfast with my own strength and immediately said, “I’ll start working tomorrow.”

Then he muttered to himself, “Maybe he’s not Chinese? Look…” “The salty smell is wafting through the air, but I wonder if I’ll be able to get a proper meal.” With that, he first checked the accommodation and returned to Noi’s house to pack his things. Then, he shook off the hand holding onto her,

Leaving only words of gratitude for the whole time, I left Noi’s house and headed to the rubber farm. Though my steps were heavy with sadness, I was proud that I was still brave enough to take on a new challenge.

During dinner, we greeted the farm family for the first time. The Chinese man we thought was the owner was the manager named ‘Leong’, and two other Chinese and five Laotians were all men, with only the lady working in the kitchen.

Fortunately, after looking at the table, I thought it was surprisingly plentiful, so I casually asked the person sitting next to me if they always ate like they do now. They smiled warmly and said that everyone sows seeds and grows them on the farm themselves, making themselves self-sufficient.

He said that when it comes to eating, there’s no need to worry about money or others—you can eat with peace of mind. Fresh vegetables and mild pork, and the overall meals were much better than expected, so although I had never done farm work before,

Still, I felt a bit relieved. After the meal, when I asked Lung about the farm owner, the owner said he usually stays in China and visits occasionally, saying he didn’t know the details. But he could guess that he was a “wealthy Chinese.”

The next morning, even though dawn was still dreaming, they were already waking me up. Anyway, I got up to solve the people’s livelihood problems, but for what reason I wasn’t sleeping, I rubbed my unopened eyes and grumbled as I went along.

Earlier, Geoni Rong said that today we would just follow around and watch, and the real work would start tomorrow. Honestly, I was a bit nervous, wondering if it was a reckless matter, but when I investigated the actual work, it didn’t seem that difficult.

Usually, rubber trees start spa-inhaling after seven years old, but usually ten years old is considered quite busy, but this farm is now entering seven-year-old, so it seems they don’t need much labor yet.

However, since he had to find and care for each tree that produced sap, he could not neglect the task of hanging a can of sap daily around his waist and collecting the sap from the can when it was full.

However, all these things happen from the very early morning hours. Anyway, the farm covers about 100 hectares and is densely packed with rubber trees, and examining each tree one by one reveals that it inevitably requires a lot of time—this was also a reality.

After a few days, I became somewhat familiar with the task, and by morning, I could finish my assigned tasks, and in the afternoon, I could freely spend some personal time. Under the shade of the rubber tree, I enjoyed water and contemplation, doodling, and doing manual labor,

As he got used to the time he had to get by and found it manageable, even the surprise date with Noi, who never forgot to visit, found joy in just a short stay, and instead of feeling uncomfortable with farm life, he even became a problem of getting stuck in his habits, showing how well he was doing.
