On the 114th day of my solo trip to Laos, A Country with Transition to Status, The Investment Realities of Laos

Day 114 of Solo Trip to Laos, A Country with Transition to Status, The Investment Realities of Laos

Today, I walked 25 km from Nonehai to Pakham.

Since entering Vientiane Province, the capital region of Laos, the once tall and majestic mountain range has gradually shrunk, and patches of farmland have spread out here and there among the green fields. As the tedious rainy season ends, I find myself walking among the abundant rice paddies and fields just before the harvest,

Immersed in the truth that the land never lies and that you reap what you sow, I felt my heart growing richer. As I walked through the shimmering golden fields, I remembered meeting someone recently in Sanyabu-ri who had visited Laos from Korea for agricultural investment.

From what I saw, heard, and felt during my travels in Laos, I found that despite the vast land area, many areas remain undeveloped, and especially because land acquisition and labor costs are low, I came planning large-scale agricultural investments in northern Laos, where the terrain and climate of the Korean Peninsula are similar.

Of course, I thought it was a good visit. The Lao government had also promised to provide strong support for foreign agricultural investment, so the timing was the right time to invest. Listening to his story, I found it quite encouraging.

But I had to ask how much and diverse lifestyle and cultural information he knew about Laos, and the answer was, as expected, a common sense of Korean way of thinking. In other words, it seemed like Laotians were all poor and foolish people.

Even if I misunderstood, I couldn’t help but feel the idea of ‘Yufen’ just passing by without hesitation, but I asked how much I was considering the budget, and he answered without hesitation that it was about 1 million US dollars (about 1.2 billion KRW).

I asked again if he had thought about the expected area and the crops he intended to cultivate, and he said it would be fine in the Sanyaburi area but said he didn’t want to talk about the crops. Of course, I said,

Since it might be his own know-how, he felt there was no need to know, so he answered that it was fine not to say anything, but he asked if he knew in detail the terrain, climate, population density, and infrastructure of northern Laos, including Sanyaburi.

Fortunately, I seemed to be aware of the publicly available numerical statistics and general information. However, the problem was that I was worried because it seemed to be approached only from a Korean perspective. Over 70% of Laos’ tropical climate zone is mountainous,

There are distinct dry and rainy seasons lasting six months each year, and infrastructure such as electricity, communications, agricultural water, and roads is extremely poor. Villages in Korea’s mountainous regions choose valleys where it is easy to obtain domestic water,

Most mountainous villages in Laos are located on mountain ridges. This is a risk of avoiding landslides and rapids during the long rainy season each year, and during the day, it can be thought of as a squall, a kind of downpour,

It is said that at night it turns into heavy rain, which can be explained as a reason. However, compared to Korea’s gentle slopes, the mountains in Laos are all steep, making it difficult to cultivate farmland due to lack of moisture.

Also, recently, large artificial dams have been built in various places, and although electricity supply is abundant, there are still too many places without track installations, so many places still cannot use electricity, and except for some major cities, few places have populations exceeding 100,000.

Villages are only about 30~50 households, making it difficult to recruit many workers at once. One of the most important issues is that, except for a few national highways, most roads are unpaved, making it very difficult for large trucks to operate.

In fact, since the Lao government is receiving food aid from abroad, revitalizing agriculture in northern Laos is an urgent priority. However, since it cannot build infrastructure to attract investment,

From an investor’s perspective, the burden of infrastructure and the need to invest are a major obstacle. Ultimately, careful consideration of these points is necessary to reduce trial and error, and when choosing crops, don’t just focus on the fact that they are relatively lacking in Korea and easier to cultivate,

Considering that most neighboring countries of Laos, such as China, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam, are agriculture-led nations, it is considered more stable to consider specialty crops rather than general varieties. Even if all these issues are resolved,

The most important thing is the investment method. In fact, if all 1.2 billion won were his own capital, he wouldn’t need to go to another country to farm or buy farms and labor. With that level of cash mobilization, he could easily live well in Korea,

We can only think of it as a joint investment by corporations, but in that case, the priority should be to generate high returns for the sake of investors. Therefore, I think investment should be made through more thorough prior information gathering.

For someone like me, rather than investing in northern Laos, where everything is still lacking, I would rather choose the south-central region, where everything is somewhat well prepared. Speaking of which, let’s take a closer look at the investment reality of Laotian agriculture,

Recently, Korean media have frequently reported, citing the arguments of many domestic agricultural experts, that “to prepare for the global sharp rise in international grain prices, it is necessary to strategically activate overseas agricultural investment to secure the shortfall.”

From this perspective, Laos is undoubtedly one of the best Southeast Asian countries for Korean farmers to invest in. And if Laos, where traditional farming is still practiced, the diligence of Korean farmers is combined with advanced scientific farming,

These regions have sufficient conditions to increase income through productivity improvement. In this regard, statistics from overseas agricultural development regions where Korean companies have entered show that Russia’s Primorsky Krai holds the most preferred share,

Next is the Southeast Asia region. Among them, Laos is no exception, and it is a transition economy country that shares the common good characteristics of overseas agricultural development and investment regions.

These transitional countries are characterized by actively attracting foreign capital to revive their weak agricultural bases as they transition from socialist to market economies. However, these Southeast Asian countries

Although most countries have excellent agricultural conditions such as land, population, and climate, their productivity has sharply declined due to systemic issues. Entering these transitional countries is advantageous for agricultural production but is politically unstable.

They must recognize that the uncertainty of carrying risks is also high. Fortunately, Laos, classified as a transitional country, has a relatively stable political base than we perceive,

Laos is a country with vast and fertile land. According to recent statistics from the National Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Development (NAFRI), Laos produces a large amount of rice across its entire territory, including Vientiane in central and Savanaket in the south.

Production is the highest, and production decreases further north. This is because Vientiane and Savattacet provinces have abundant effective land suitable for agricultural production, and infrastructure such as farmland improvement and irrigation facilities are relatively well developed compared to other regions.

While explaining the high yield, it was noted that although some grains such as beans and corn are sporadically produced in the barren northern mountainous areas, they should not be overlooked. Currently, the Lao government is working to increase agricultural productivity

While actively encouraging foreign capital investment, the central government is promoting investment attractions, and each local government is presenting various conditions for separate investment attractions. As interest is focused on the northern regions rather than the southern ones,

Udomsai, Luang Namta, and Sanyaburi are frequently mentioned as prime investment destinations, prompting Korean investors to take an interest and conduct research. Most of these areas have good soil at affordable prices,

This is because it can utilize the rich water resources of the Mekong River, and the logistics and transportation issues—which have been the biggest obstacle to investment in the region—are expected to gradually ease in 1~2 years. Accordingly, the Lao government is actively working to attract investment,

First, this is the appropriate time to secure land that can be leased for a long period and to lay the foundation for attracting various facilities. Furthermore, the current state of Korean agriculture is shifting from farm development to securing distribution hubs through advanced methods,

As the country seeks to gradually shift its domestic demand base to overseas markets, it is certainly important to consider aggressive entry into Laos to secure overseas farmland. However, the concrete success model is still lacking, so overseas investment is expected to be difficult,

If you look for small-scale success stories by region and build know-how through reliable information gathering, you can say it’s fine. The introduction seems long, but in short, if I were to offer advice to investors in northern Laos,

It seems good to take an interest in forestry or livestock farming, and if you insist on crops, you should carefully consider unless they are special crops. Also, if you invest here targeting the domestic market of Laos, there is a high chance of failure, and in any case, exports must be prioritized.

For reference, the current successful agricultural products include special crops like medicinal herbs, and it would be good to select items that can be harvested at altitudes above 800 meters. Due to regional characteristics, soybeans are supplied as animal feed, and Job’s tears are supplied as ingredients for various dietary habits.

Coffee, which has become a favorite food among Koreans. Cassava (manton), whose prices continue to rise internationally, is also known as a good item. However, in the case of alternative energy sources like jatropha and palm oil, domestic companies have already invested and are continuously reproducing them,

Since there are no definitive success stories, special caution is needed when investing. Jatropha is the agricultural product most avoided by local farmers due to land degradation. With global grain supply and demand currently expected to be unstable,

Just as grain-importing countries compete fiercely, Laos is fiercely securing farmland, which has become a foregone conclusion. Therefore, recognizing the strategic necessity of overseas food resources, we are preparing for a future strategic advantage in overseas agricultural production,

Laos should be recognized as an important national resource that must be secured. Therefore, considering that Laos is still a country with significant development potential across both southern and northern regions, it is clearly a prime investment opportunity for Korean farmers,

Especially for Korean farmers who emphasize diligence, integrity, and scientific farming, Laos is a place worth challenging at least once. I have the idea that after finishing my trip, I will settle somewhere in southern Laos, farm, and live there at least once.

No, I felt I should consider this trip as a more active investigation, not just thinking about farming in Laos, but an experiential trip that diligently combines practical research and analysis so that dreams can become reality.
