ugh! Dreaming, dream or birthday! (3)&(4)

 Judging from the circumstances, everyone seemed to be seriously injured, and all they could think about was the ambulance, which was a serious situation that could no longer be expressed in words. Of course, I was no exception,

 But as the car crashed, I was not thrown straight down the ravine, but when the car first hit the middle of the cliff and flipped over with some softening, I was thrown out of the car and separated from the crashing car.

 It was only a small jolt as I fell into a grassy forest of gently sloping weeds. But there were bruises, abrasions, and bleeding on my neck and shoulders, and my head ached so much from the muscle aches and shocks.

 But once I came to my senses and sat up, I had no problem. And when I looked closely, I saw that about 10 meters below, the car I was riding in was crushed and overturned in the valley, with all four wheels of the car facing the sky, like a squirrel spinning its wheels.

 I was slumped in the back of my seat, and I was hanging on to a slight protrusion in the grass, in the middle of a cliff, a little above the car, with a few other passengers. I had no memory of what had happened in the air as I fell.

 However, the backpack I had with me, the glasses on my face, and the shack I wore around my waistband were all separated, and even the cell phone in my pocket was separated, and I saw that they were all scattered around me.

 It seems to have spilled, but anyway, he doesn’t seem to be hurt too much, he doesn’t seem to have any problems moving his body right now, so he moves his hands and feet, and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong, so he stands up and picks up his belongings.

 I was able to sit down again for a moment. Luckily, as time went on, I gradually found psychological stability, and now I started to check on the well-being of the people I was riding with, but all of them, except for a few, were so badly broken that they didn’t even look right away.

 Knowing that my condition was serious, and that I was not doing this, I thought that I should escape from the ravine, climb up the cliff and call for help from a passing car.

 However, when I looked at the top of the cliff where I fell, I realized that even though it was about 10 meters long, the cliff was a cliff, and it seemed that it would not be easy to climb up with my bare body. But I had to find a way to climb somehow,

 Going back to my military life in my memory a long time ago, I pulled out the tips I had  learned during my mountain infiltration training, such as cliff climbing and began to crawl up the cliffs. After all, the first few times I slipped and got muddy,

 Still, I didn’t give up, and I continued to try again. This time I picked up a suitable tree branch, put it on my waistband, and hit the branch on the cliff slope, while coping with the slipping while securing the support of my body and the stepping of my feet.

 Finally, after 30 minutes of fighting, I succeeded in escaping from the valley little by little and was able to get on the road I was aiming for. He wiped his sweat-stained face and sat down on the side of the road, smiling bitterly as he smoked a cigarette with a sigh of relief at his small relief.

 Luckily, after another 30 minutes, I was able to call a passing car that I almost missed, and thankfully, the people in the car got out, witnessed the accident in the grass of the ravine, and pulled the injured passengers off the cliff one by one with the help of ropes, etc.

 First of all, the people who were in a hurry were injured, and then they were loaded  into their cars and driven to the hospital. And I was able to get away from the scene of the accident in the first car of the evacuation to the hospital, helping to stop the bleeding of other wounded people who were still bleeding. 

 Of course, for the sake of the rest of the injured people who were left at the scene of the accident, he did not forget to call out to other vehicles passing by in the middle of the road, inform them of the urgency of the accident site, and ask for the transfer of the remaining passengers.

 Finally, in the car that was running, my injuries were so mild compared to the other passengers, so mysterious, that at last I arrived at the hospital in Saisombun at dusk, after about three hours of driving.

 First, I started to give first aid to patients who were in critical condition, and as the situation gradually cleared up, all the attention was focused on me, a foreigner, and the doctor at the hospital also asked, “Are you a passenger in that car?”

 I was asked repeatedly. The doctor then prescribed injections and medication for my muscle aches and headaches, and recommended that I lie in bed for a day or two and then rest for a day or two, then see if there were any other symptoms, and that I be hospitalized.

 After a while, I was led by a nurse into an inpatient room with other seriously injured patients, and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief because the other critically ill patients were already being treated first, and everyone was still in their right minds and receiving treatment, except for two patients with serious injuries such as ruptured intestines.

 In addition, the seriously injured were not in a life-threatening condition if only emergency surgery was performed, and everyone was relieved that it was indeed a good thing in the  midst of misfortune, but in retrospect, the driver’s calm judgment at the time of the accident caused the car to move in the direction of travel.

 If I had fallen to the right, the height of the cliff would have been at least 200 meters, and I thought that by now, all the passengers, including me, would not be from this world.

 Once again, I felt that it was only a good thing in the midst of misfortune. And all the while, I was grateful to the driver who induced me to fall to the left, but it was so dizzying that it still seemed like a dream.

 It was indeed an accident in a remote valley in Laos, where I was about to disappear one day by a demonic spirit, but I was not yet told to die, perhaps because the three goddesses of my destiny, the Farkas, were with me and took care of me.

 I still felt so excited that I couldn’t tell if it was just a dream or a vision, just that I felt like I had helped him escape such an unfortunate event, and the first night of the Saisomboon that I couldn’t even dream of was deepening in the cruel first impression.

 But that first impression wasn’t enough, and now it’s like another hidden ambush, and as the cold of Saisom blowing from the highest peak in Laos at an altitude of 2.800 meters is raging, it’s not enough to put on two layers of outer clothing right away.

 His whole body was trembling, his teeth clenching automatically, creating the appearance of a shabby hospital bed.Luckily,  the nurse didn’t feel sorry for me, and thankfully I covered her with two thick blankets.

 The warmth melted away, barely keeping the chill at bay, adding to the thrill of emotion. The day was stained with bad memories, but the two blankets were a little comforting, and I was ending with the memory that I was fine.

 And the other thing I remember is that the driver’s family and friends, especially the driver’s wife, are more interested in the injuries of the passengers, even though her husband is very injured, and it is a folk way to relieve the pain of bruises such as trauma.

 I was impressed by the sincerity with which he brought the precious and real natural mandarin, which can be said to be the best emergency medicine in them ountain village,  and spoon-fed it to the inpatients one by one, every hour throughout the night.

 Of course , he was going to spoon-feed me, so I tried to avoid spoon-feeding him, saying that I could eat it, so I quickly took the medicine bowl and drank it several times in one gulp, so that the migraine that seemed to be screaming from the medicine foot of the gnarl was washed away.

 I thought I was able to get rid of all the other pains and get a good night’s sleep. And in addition, the selfless accident repair of the car that passed by immediately after the accident and the evacuation to the hospital, all the passengers, depending on the severity of their injuries, calmly and calmly treated in hospital beds, depending on the severity of their injuries.

 Of course, it was a very sad scene, but on the other hand, I thought that it was a touching day of human consideration and sharing, and the night of Saisom that I could never forget was getting so hopelessly deepening.

상황으로 보아하니 모두가 중경상을 입은 것 같았기에, 어서 빨리 병원으로 후송 해야만 될 듯 싶은 구급차 생각 뿐, 더 이상 말로는 표현할 수 없는 엄청난 중대사태가 벌어지고 있었던 것이었다. 물론 나도 예외는 아니었지만,

 

그러나 자동차가 추락하면서, 곧장 계곡아래로 처박힌 것이 아니라, 자동차가 1차로 벼랑 중간에 부딪혀 충격이 다소 완화되면서 뒤집힐 때, 나는 자동차에서 튕겨져 나 가면서, 추락하는 자동차에서 분리돼,

 

마침 나 뒹군 곳이, 잡초가 무성한 완만한 경사의 풀 숲으로 떨어지면서, 그런대로 작은 충격만 받았음 같았다. 하지만 목과 어깨 등에 타박상과 찰과상에 출혈이 있었고, 그리고 근육통과 놀란 충격으로 머리가 몹시 쑤시듯 아파왔다.

 

하지만 일단 정신을 차리고 일어나 앉는 것까진 문제가 없었다. 그리고 자세히 주변을 살펴보니, 저만치 10여m 아래, 내가 타고 온 자동차는 계곡 속에 온통 찌그러져 뒤집혀서, 자동차의 네 바퀴가 하늘을 향한 채, 다람쥐 채 바퀴를 돌리듯,

 

재자리에서 돌아가며 쳐 박혀 있었고, 나는 자동차 보다 조금 위쪽 풀숲, 벼랑 중간 턱받침 같이, 조금 튀어나온 곳에 매달리 듯, 함께 타고 온 몇몇 승객들과 같이 나뒹굴고 있는 것이었다. 떨어지면서 허공 중에서 무슨 일이 있었는지는 기억이 전혀 없었는데,

 

다만 가지고 있던 배낭은 물론, 얼굴에 안경과 허리춤에 차고 있던 쎅 등이 모두 분리 된 채, 주머니속 핸드폰까지 밧데리가 분리돼서, 각각 모두 주변에 흩어져 어질어져 있는 걸로 볼 때, 아마 내 몸이 풀숲에서 나뒹굴며

 

쏟아진 것 같다는 것인데, 어쨌든 그런대로 몸상태는 많이 다치진 않은 듯, 당장 몸을 움직이는 데는 별 문제가 없는 것 같아, 일단 손과 발을 움직여 보곤, 특별한 이상은 없는 것 같아, 일어서 주섬주섬 내 물건들을 주워 챙기고는,

 

잠시 다시 주저 앉을 수 있었다. 다행히 시간이 지남에 따라 차츰 심리적인 안정도 찾으면서, 이젠 함께 타고 온사람들의 안부를 확인하기 시작했는데, 몇몇 사람을 제외하곤, 모두가 당장 보기에도 형편없이 망가져,

 

심각한 상태들이 분명, 무엇보다 사지 멀쩡한 내가 이러고 있을 게 아니다 싶어 지면서, 일단 계곡속에서 탈출, 절벽 위 도로로 올라가서 지나가는 자동차에게 구조요청이라도 해야 한다는 생각이 들었다.

 

그러나 떨어진 벼랑 위쪽을 바라 보았더니, 당연 10여m 정도라고 해도, 절벽은 절벽이었던 지라, 그냥 맨몸임으로는 기어 올라가기는 여간 쉽지 않을 듯 싶기만 했다. 그렇지만, 어떻게 든 방법을 찾아서 올라가야만 했기에,

 

오래전 기억속 가물가물 한 군생활까지 거슬러 올라가, 케케묵은 산악침투 훈련 시 숙지한, 절벽 타기 크라이밍 등의 요령을 끄집어 내어, 엉금엉금 절벽을 기어서 오르기 시작했다. 역시 몇 번은 미끄러져 흙투성이가 되었는데,

 

그래도 포기하지 않고, 계속해서 다시 도전, 이번에는 적당한 나뭇가지를 꺽어 모아서, 허리춤에 차고는, 절벽 비탈에 나뭇가지를 때려 박으면서, 몸의 지탱과 발의 디딤을 확보하면서 미끄러짐에 대응,

 

드디어 30여분의 사투 끝에 조금씩 계곡에서 탈출하는데 성공, 목표로 했던 도로위로 올라설 수 있었다. 그리곤 땀으로 범벅이 된 얼굴을 닦아 올리며, 도로 한족 켠에 주저 앉아, 작은 여유의 안도에 한숨으로 담배한대를 피우며 쓴 미소를 짓고 있었다.

 

다행히 다시 30분쯤 지나면서, 그냥 지나칠뻔한, 지나가는 자동차를 불러 세울 수 있었고, 고맙게도, 그 차에 타고 있던 사람들이 내려서, 계곡 풀숲에 빠진 사고현장을 목격하더니, 로프 등을 이용, 다친 승객들을 하나, 둘 벼랑에서 끌어 올려선,

 

우선 급한데로 많이 다친 사람부터, 그들의 차에 옮겨 싣고는, 병원으로 향하기에 이르렀다. 그리고 나는 우선 병원으로 후송되는 차량 안에서, 아직 피를 흘리고 있는 다른 부상자들의 지혈을 돕게 되면서, 일단 사고현장에서 벗어 날 수 있었다. 

 

물론 사고현장에 남겨진 나머지 다친 사람들을 위해, 애써 중간에서 지나가는 다른 차량을 마구 불러 세워, 사고현장의 위급함을 알리면서, 나머지 승객들의 추가 이송을 부탁하는 것도 잊지 않았다.

 

비로소 나는 부리나케 달리는 차안에서, 다른 동승자들에 비해, 나의 너무나 가벼운 부상을, 아무리 생각해 봤어도, 너무나 신비하기만 하는 등, 아무튼 그렇게 약 3시간을 달려서, 드디어 해 질 녘 사이솜분의 병원에 도착,

 

우선 위급한 환자부터 응급조치를 하기 시작했고, 그렇게 조금씩 상황정리가 되면서, 모든 관심이 외국인인 내게 집중 됐는데, 역시 병원의 의사 등도 “그 자동차의 승객이 맞냐?” 고 다른 사람들의 부상에 비해 너무나 멀쩡한 내가 의아한 듯,

 

몇 번을 되풀이해서 물어보는 것 이였다. 그리곤 의사는 내 근육통과 두통에 대해 주사와 약을 처방하고, 우선 병상에 누워 하루 이틀 정도 안정을 처 한 후, 다른 증상이 없는지 상황을 보자고 하면서, 입원치료를 받으라고 권했고,

 

잠시 후 간호사의 안내를 받아, 다른 중상자 등이 있는 입원실로 들어섰는데, 이미 다른 중환자들이 먼저 치료를 받고 있었고, 그래도 장파열 등 중상자 2명을 제외하곤, 모두가 제정신을 차리고 치료를 받고 있음에, 안도의 한숨을 내쉴 수 있었다.

 

또한 중상자들도, 응급 수술만 하면, 생명에 심각할 정도의 상태는, 아닌 것이라고 확인되면서, 모두가 정말 불행 중 다행이라고 안심을 할 수 있었는데, 돌이켜 보면 사고당시 운전기사의 침착한 판단으로 자동차가 진행 방향의

 

왼쪽 10여m 낭떠러지로 떨어 졌기에 망정이지, 만일 오른쪽으로 추락했다면 절벽의 높이가 최소한 200m는 족히 넘는 아득함 이었기에, 아마 지금쯤, 나를 비롯한 승객들 모두는 이 세상 사람이 아닐 거란 생각이 들면서,

 

다시한번, 그저 불행 중 다행일 수밖에 없다는 마음 뿐이었다. 그리고 와중에도 왼쪽으로 추락을 유도한 운전기사에게 고마운 마음마저 들고 있었는데, 참으로 아찔했던 순식간 이, 아직도 그저 꿈만 같음 이었다.

 

정말 라오스의 외딴 골짜기에서, 어느 날 불귀의 혼으로 사라 질 뻔한 사고였는데, 그래도 아직 죽으라는 팔자는 아니었는지, 어쩌면 나의 운명의 세 여신인 파르카들이 나와 함께 하며 보살펴 주심에,

 

이런 불 상사를 피해 갈 수 있도록 도와준 것 같다는 생각 뿐, 그저 꿈인지 생시인지 분간이 안될 정도로, 아직도 놀란 가슴은 두근거리고 있었고, 그렇게 꿈에도 못 잊을 사이솜분의 첫날밤은, 모질기만 한 첫인상 속에, 깊어 만 가고 있었다.

 

그러나 그 첫인상만으론 부족했는지, 이젠 또 하나의 숨어 있던 복병만 같은, 매섭게 파고 드는, 해발 2.800여m의 라오스 최고봉에서 불어오는, 사이솜분의 추위가 엄습하면서, 당장 겉 옷을 두벌 씩이나 겹쳐 입고도 모자라,

 

온몸을 벌벌 떨어 대며, 자동으로 이빨을 부딪히고 있는 등, 초라한 병상의 모습을 연출하고만 있었다. 다행히 간호사가 그런 내 모습이 얼마나 안스러웠는지, 고맙게도 두툼한 2장의 담요를 덮어 주었고,

 

 그 온정에 눈 녹 듯, 가까스로 냉기를 잠재우며, 감격에 감격을 더 할 뿐이었다. 그렇게 오늘 하루가 온통 안 좋은 기억들 만으로 얼룩지고 있었지만, 그나마 그 담요 2장이 조금은 위로가 되면서, 괜찮았다는 기억으로 마무리 되고 있었다.

 

그리고 또 하나, 괜찮은 기억이라면, 운전기사의 가족과 친지들, 특히 운전기사의 부인은 자신의 남편이 많이 다쳤음에도 불구하고, 승객들의 부상에 더욱 관심을 보이며, 선 듯 외상 등의 타박상에 대한, 통증을 해소시키는 민간용법으로,

 

이곳 산골 최상의 비상약이라고 할 수 있는, 귀하디 귀한 진짜 자연산 웅담을 어디서 구해 가지고 와서, 일일이 입원환자들에게, 직접 밤새 1시간 간격으로 계속 떠먹여주는 등, 정성 어린 손길이 인상적이었음 이었다.

 

물론 내게도 떠 먹여 주려 했기에, 나는 내가 먹을 정도는 된다며, 애써 떠먹여 주는 것을 피해, 얼른 약사발을 뺏아서 단숨에 마시기를 여러 번 했는데, 그래서 그런지 웅담의 약발이 송곳으로 지르는 듯했던 편두통도 씻어내며,

 

밤새 다른 통증들도 지우며, 숙면을 취할 수 있었음이 아닌가 싶었다. 그리고 아울러, 사고 직 후 생면부지 지나가던 자동차의 헌신적인 사고 수습과 병원 후송에, 승객들 모두 상처의 정도에 따라, 차례데로 침착하게 병상에서 치료받는 모습들,

 

당연 너무나 안타까운 장면 이기는 했지만, 그래도 한편으론 모두가 인간적인 배려와 나눔의 감동적인 하루였음 이란 생각이 들면서, 꿈에도 못 잊을 사이솜분의 밤은 그렇게 속절 없이 깊어 만 가고 있었음 이었다.
