On the 112th day of my solo trip to Laos, facing the joys and sorrows of a small riverside village

Day 112 of my solo trip to Laos, facing the joys and sorrows of a small riverside village

Today, I walked 30 km from Xanamkan to Namhi.

The Mekong River stretches a bit out there, and the charming riverside village of Xanamkan comes into view. I saw an elderly man leisurely fishing by the village riverbank, so I thought I should rest, so I stopped for a moment, quietly approached, and sat beside him.

Beneath the bamboo hat, the skin was tanned black, the deep wrinkles of time looked so stingy, and the silent smile at the corner of his mouth was especially striking. After sitting side by side staring at the river for a long time, I spoke first. “You must have lived here for a long time, haven’t you?”

“Oh~ You speak Lao. Which country are you from?” “Yes, I’m Korean. I’ve learned a little Lao.” “You must be a traveler. Where did you come from? Why are you in this remote village?” “We stopped by briefly on the way from Sanyaburi to Vientiane.”

After chatting about various things for quite a while, I politely greeted them and stood up, knowing there was still a long way to go. Among the conversations with the old man, although Sanakam is a little-known village along the Mekong River, just a few decades ago,

Just before Laos became communist, when Thailand helped France invade Laos, Vientiane was occupied and fiercely fought in a stronghold, and it was a place filled with sorrow and sorrow in many nameless deaths where men alike were slaughtered alike.

Before he turned ten, one day he went to a village across the river with a friend. When he returned, he found his entire family brutally dead. Fortunately, the war didn’t last long and ended, so he survived with help from those around him, living desperately as if begging for a young life.

Thinking that someone in the family might return alive, I protect my hometown, living until now. As time passes, perhaps buried in everyone’s memories, the river flows indifferently as if nothing happened.

The victims of that day still live with the fact that if they gaze at that river, bruises of blood in their hearts inevitably stir, and the small spark of resentment still lingering inside seems to be flickering in the river breeze.

What is war that leaves so much pain? Even though war is unacceptable for any reason, it continues everywhere around the world, somewhere in the world, just as every war we know has been,

Unfortunately, it was clear that future wars would also be engraved in the history of hatred under the guise of justice, atop new sorrow. Long ago, humanity chose to settle and live together to escape wandering and maintain a stable life,

As communal living with a minimum guarantee was thus recognized as rational, many local communities based on the environment emerged, and in these communities, natural leaders were created to distinguish the fundamental human order, morality, and ethics for community life.

The community was perpetuated. However, this marked the beginning of the turbulent history of human suffering, and many of those historical issues were necessary for leaders to maintain and guarantee their authority, ultimately seeking the authority of a select group rather than the majority,

It seems that it all began when new customs were created and named law. Of course, it was created under the pretext of protecting the weak, but leaders tainted by greed made the strength of the strong even stronger,

It was undeniable that they had created necessary evil. Also, as extremely weak humans before nature, it is only natural to seek gods and build faith in relying on them to adapt to nature’s ever-changing nature, but even those gods were divided into Nishin and Neshin, causing conflict.

It was impossible to fully accept that it led to the killing of war, and nature, always undergoing a grand process of change, has turned the sea into mountains, and the mountains into the sea. As a small part of it, humans, as a small member, inevitably feel that if their space collapses,

They had no choice but to consider moving to a more comfortable new space, and during this process, quite a few issues arose: “Did it just make others look bigger?”  Some powerful individuals with vested interests and followers, borrowing the greatness of nature, invoked the customs they believed in,

In this way, new members began to force their own customs. Although some differences in customs depending on the environment are natural, simple principles of life that can only be cultivated and shared together are distinguished by complex hereditary and religious differences,

Eventually, it led to wars where people killed people, and so far, countless people have been dying due to differences in concepts and other factors. Now, in the global era, with ideologies, philosophies, religions, and nations,

If the conclusion is that we should all live happily together, then we need to move beyond the short-term interests imposed by vested interests and territorial limits. First, shouldn’t we all deeply reflect on the dignity of life? That’s all, I think.

Looking back, human history ignores the humanist principle that we must live kindly and kindly, sharing and giving, blinded by profit and vanity, creating heroes who are not heroes, and causing countless people to

Rather, it seems like they were being pushed out of the world. Perhaps such saints, gentlemen, heroes, and heroes have made such a great mistake of power, and it is hard to erase the thought that humans must be punished and punished for killing people for any reason,

Above all, shouldn’t he have taught him clearly first! That was the impression. But it was clear that he couldn’t. Anyway, even while living in such an overwhelming tragedy, humans take no responsibility for themselves and instead act with pride,

Simply on that wheel, brainwashed and manipulated by the strong, yet living only for a moment of joy and pleasure, the painful reality we feel and accept is perfectly normalthis is reality.

One day, a guest came to his house and asked him to stay for a while, but the owner drove him away, saying it was different from the customs he believed in. The guest was exhausted from the long journey and had nowhere else to go, and in the end, he had to make a final deal with death.

From a position where death is inevitable, they instinctively reach the urgent conclusion of doing whatever it takes to survive and are compelled to commit brutal murder and looting by the law of the jungle. Yet, they remain silent and cannot simply endure

The host, too, inevitably faces off with guests to protect their precious territory. After the fight ends, the world no longer sides with the deceased, the absolute loser; whoever wins the murder is treated as self-defense, and the master and guest see the victorious murder as a history of defense and challenge.

Rationalize each one. Organize it so that no loser can wander the world as a pitiful soul, without a single coin of sympathy. Eventually, the most sacred pleasure of labor, driven by human survival instincts, is transformed into murder and plunder,

Relying solely on superiority of strength, relying on the shallow power of a single brain that allows one to live well even amid laziness and laziness, they walk on an unpredictable ice plate that encourages the emergence of another strong player.

Even now, somewhere I know or don’t know, endless wars are being fought in various formsfor their own big and small interestssuch as wars of power, money, pens, and even love and possessionsfor their own big and small interests,

Because of that war, many people are ultimately killed because they cannot live as they were disqualified. How should we truly live? Is war justified to survive in competition? Of course, if the opponent wants to kill us, we must fight an inseparable war to survive and win.

However, before the situation erupts and life and death are on the line, we must not overlook the urgent need for both sides to deliberate so they can negotiate the causes of war. Ironically, there are many ordinary and good people in the world, but ironically, they are maintained by a few special and evil individuals,

Ultimately, in the cycle of reincarnation where enemies beget enemies and death begets death, believing in and following cause and effect is crucial. No matter what, if we can return to that pure, original heart, we can have no purpose or benefit,

Because we are all human, simply being human means that we can share, give, and help each other, and we must clearly understand that this is the case. In this global world, it is time to break down all barriers between nations and even the prides of each person’s heart,

I earnestly reflect on whether it is right for everyone, free from all interests, authority, greed, and vanity, to return to their original human attitude and be able to live together peacefully and freely at any given time, anytime and anywhere.

In fact, if you think about it, this place is also across the river from Laos and Thailand, but until recently, for a long time, it was a scattered region of Laos, with the same ethnic group, and the villages across the river were undoubtedly neighbors of relatives and acquaintances.

Perhaps there is no special interest between the two countries or the reason for being an isolated region, but even though they have different nationalities, they are still family and friends, so it is only natural that most people cross borders to visit relatives.

Fortunately, compared to other border areas, it seemed that many people were freely coming and going through simple procedures. Perhaps because of that, it now seems to have everything it needs but still looks somewhat clumsy as a border town.

It was just Sanakham, a small riverside village welcoming visitor. As I walked, picking up various joys and sorrows, my steps had already left the path that descended along the Mekong River and turned north.

If you cross the mountains from here and head southeast, not far away is said to be Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Until recently, everyone in this area said that unless they used the Mekong River waterway,

Everyone had no choice but to take the northern land route and drive about 10 hours by car to Vang Vieng, but fortunately, a few years ago, a shortcut was built along the riverside for expansion and paving, so now you don’t have to go through all that hardship.

Soon, I could get to Vientiane in about two hours. Of course, since my trip to Laos was in no hurry, I didn’t need to rush to Vientiane, so I chose the old route that seemed savories,

Maybe it’s nothing special, but just thinking about missing it and regretting it, I decided it would be better to take a short detour north along the road and gradually enjoy more Laos along the Mekong River. So today, the choice was just a bit of a toddler…
