day 39, give me some water! (1)&(2)

※Today, I traveled 65 kilometers on a mountain road from Tabok (Borikamsai Province) to Nengsan Mountain (Vientiane Province) in a minibus converted into a freight truck.

 It was just a tabok that I had chosen because I wanted to have a drink, but I had already been staying for three days without planning for three days, unpacking the ashes that had accumulated during the trip, as I welcomed the welcome guests who came to me with a lunch box and side dishes.

 Of course, I didn’t forget to ask for directions to Saisom Bun whenever I could, but after all, “where there is a will, there is a way”, and yesterday I finally found out that there is a hidden road from Tabok to Xieng Quang via Long Mountain.

 However, although it is now possible for cars to pass, it is impossible to go there on foot, so I was a little disappointed, but I decided to be satisfied with just being able to go. If you go on foot, even if the distance is about 70 kilometers,

 Since I had to go on a rugged road with deep mountains and no villages in the middle, I was told that I would have to go for two nights and three days, but I was threatened that I would have to go at the risk of being infected with wild animals.

 I was standing in the way that I couldn’t do it. Even the local police officer recommended a car, so I gave up walking and had no choice but to use a minibus converted from a freight truck, which only takes one flight a day.

 Anyway, as I said, “If you are intellectual, you will be gimmicked”, and I am glad that I can smile at the thought that there is a decent road that can go to Xieng Gwangju via Saisombun, which I had planned, considering the situation so far.

 Finally, at 8 a.m. the next day, we got into a car bound for Saisombun and started running, repeatedly climbing up and down the long-awaited rugged mountain road, blowing white dust wildly.

 However, the road conditions were so bad that I had no idea that they would be this bad, and I was on high alert, straining my hands and feet, and going to the edge of my head, sweat dripped down my spine, and I stopped for lunch on the way.

 It was only then that I realized how serious the road had been, and I realized that it must be a path that I could not walk on without knowing it. Then the tightrope walk on the edge of the cliff continued for another four hours, and we all managed to reach Long Mountain after running for about eight hours. 

 The reason why it was possible to reach 65 kilometers and drive for more than 7 hours by car was that the road was so rough that the car could not speed up.   

 The sight of cars in the forests and valleys sent shivers down my spine, and I couldn’t help but feel a chill down my spine, but about five kilometers ahead of Long Mountain, the surrounding bordering mountains boasted of their majesty.  

 As if to solemnly reaffirm the overwhelming feeling of the past, I could see the remains of a car that had not yet rusted beneath a cliff that was more than 100 meters high.

 When I asked the old man who lived in this neighborhood who was riding with me, no, I don’t know! It was the scene of a major disaster that happened not just a few days ago, but just yesterday. After all, it is an old vehicle that has been converted into a freight car, and the main cause is a brake rupture,

 Three people died on the spot, and six more people died after being taken to the hospital, killing a total of nine people and seriously injuring more than 20 people.  

 The crash of the car was distorted like a tin can, and I could only imagine the horror of the people in it, but most of all, I was paralyzed and on the verge of fainting because I had tried to get on that bus yesterday.

 Like most of Laos’ provincial towns, there is only one public transport service every day, and the departure time is around 9 a.m., but when the passengers are filled appropriately, the driver departs on his own, leaving one hour before the scheduled time.

 I missed the bus, and I had no choice but to wait another day, and today I was heading to Yalong Mountain, and I couldn’t help but sigh at the thought of how lucky I was that I wasn’t able to get on that car.

 Even though I was traveling overboard, I was not a real person, and I didn’t feel like anyone else was in the face of the scene of the accident that unfolded before my eyes, and the horrific scene that I could have been one of the casualties.

 Normally, I would have been in a hurry, but yesterday I went to bed late thanks to his beer, or rather, because of him, and I woke up late, and I missed the car, but I thought that a drink saved me.

 It reminded me that my destiny was not yet over, and that sometimes even the decisive misfortune was strangely eluding me, and I couldn’t help but shudder as my blood surged, and I shuddered at the thought of my destiny being so unpredictable.

 Despite the intense midday heat, the majesty of the cold mountains was eerily creepy, and the heat was quite chilly, making the exposed skin cringe in a way that words could no longer describe.

 But after a while, when I finally arrived at Longshan, I could only breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that I had spent so many days just to go to Saisombun, that I had come all the way back and that I had come this far, and that I was now one step closer.

 The warmth of the quiet and compact mountain village of Longshan seems to welcome me in a friendly way, and my selfish greed, which makes me think that Ji is some kind of dragon gari barrel bone, is still stirring in me today.

 I had already forgotten the horrors of yesterday. But there was still a way to go, and the companions were telling them that they would have to go from Long Mountain to Saisom Bun for another 10 hours, over and over more rugged roads than the one they had traveled to today.

 In addition, the car that I had taken today was already pushed by the setting sun, and of course it was not allowed to drive at night, so I was informed that it would only go as far as Long Mountain, and that it would stop after a while, so I had no choice but to  get off here and take a rest, so I couldn’t help but worry about the road ahead.

 Also, there is only one public transport service a day for the next section, and it only leaves at around 8 a.m. every day, so today’s train had already departed, so I had to spend a day in the vicinity to catch a car that was due to leave tomorrow morning.

 Luckily, Duval, who was tired from the fatigue that had accumulated until yesterday, was able to enjoy a series of road trips for the first time in a long time, so I thought I would be able to enjoy a relaxing mountain night, so I decided on an inn and looked around the simple Long Mountain before dinner.

 I was taking a walk, and in front of the stranger’s eyes, my eyes were fixed on the sight of the Lao people crowding out to the river to bathe, as if to give them a sense of nostalgia. For an outsider, it could only be a unique scenery in an open space.

 As promised, the focus was on the consistent appearance of the women, from children to the elderly as well as young ladies, raising their usual long skirts up to their breasts to cover only their inner flesh.

 She was taking a bath with a fire pouring through her skirt, and it was so funny and lovely that it made me smile. Even more, the silhouettes of the wet clothes that hold out the body as it is on the way home after taking a bath,

 I could only say that it was so human, but what if they frowned on me as sexual harassment, I couldn’t take a picture, so I just glanced at them.

 

라오스여행 39째날, 물 좀 주소! (1)&(2)

※오늘은 타복(보리캄사이주)에서 넝산(비엔티엔주)까지, 화물차 개조, 미니버스로 산악도로를 65킬로미터 갔다.

 

그저 한잔 술 생각에 어떨 결에 선택한 타복이었는데, 도시락에 밑반찬까지 싸 들고 찾아온 반가운 손님까지 맞이하면서, 벌써 3일째 예정에 없었던 날들을 머물면서, 그동안 여행 중 쌓였던 회포를 풀고 있었다.

 

물론, 틈 만 나면 사이솜분으로 가는 길을 수소문하는 것은 잊지 않았는데, 역시 “뜻이 있는 곳에 길이 있다” 고, 어제는 끝내 타복에서 롱산을 거쳐 시엥꽝까지 갈 수 있는 도로가 숨어 있다는 것을 알게 되었다.

 

그러나 현재 자동차의 통행은 가능하지만 절대 걸어서는 갈 수 없다는 것이었기에, 여간 실망이 아닐 수 없었지만, 그래도 갈 수 있다는 것 만으로 만족하기로 했다. 만일 걸어 간다면, 비록 거리상으론 약70여킬로 정도라 하여도,

 

산이 깊고 중간에 마을이 없는 험준한 길을, 혼자 노숙을 하면서 가야 했기에, 아무래도 2박3일은 가야 한다고 했는데, 그것도 맹수 등이 출몰할지 모르는 상당히 위험천만한 상황을 감수하면서 가야 한다고 협박을 하면서,

 

이구동성 절대 안 된다고 막아 서고 있었다. 더 더욱 이 지역 경찰관까지 나서 자동차를 권하는 바람에 결국 걸어서 가는 것은 포기하고, 오직 하루1편 뿐인 화물차를 개조한 미니버스를 이용할 수밖에 없게 되었다.

 

어쨌든 “지성이면 감천” 이라고 했듯이, 찾아 헤맨 보람을 느끼며, 그 동안의 상황을 감안, 예정했던 사이솜분을 거쳐 시엥광주로 갈 수 있는 괜찮은 도로가 있다는 것만으로도 회심에 미소를 지을 수 있음을 다행으로 알고,

 

드디어 작전변경, 그렇게 다음날 오전8시, 오매불망 사이솜분 행 자동차를 타고, 희뿌연 흙먼지 를 마구마구 날리면서, 대망의 험준한 산악도로를 위험천만하게 오르고 내리기를 반복하면서 달리기 시작했다.

 

그러나 도로사정이 이 정도로 안 좋을지는, 꿈에도 몰랐을 정도로 심각했음에, 얼마나 온몸의 촉각을 곤두세우고, 손발에 힘을 주고, 혼비백산하고 가고 있는지, 등줄기엔 땀이 흥건했는데, 중간에 점심식사를 위해 잠시 정차하면서,

 

비로소 지나온 길이 정말 심각했음을 되새겨 보면서, 정말 알고는 도저히 걸어서 갈 수 없는 길이 틀림없음을 통감하고 있었다. 그리고 다시 4시간여 벼랑 끝 외줄타기는 계속됐고, 모두 8시간쯤을 달려 가까스로 롱산에 도착하고 있었는데,

 

65km의 그리 멀지 않은 거리를, 그것도 자동차로 7시간 이상 달려서 도착할 수 있었던 것은, 그 만큼 도로가 험하여 자동차가 제 속도를 낼 수 없었다는 것인데, 실제 롱산을 앞두고 저만치 절벽아래,

 

숲과 계곡속에 쳐 박혀 있는 녹슮은 자동차들이 군데군데 보이고 있음에, 등골이 오싹하기까지 할 수밖에 없었는데, 그렇게 롱산을 5km 정도 앞 두고, 주변 경계의 산들이 보란듯이 웅장함을 자랑하면서,

 

지금까지의 압도적인 느낌을 다시한번 엄숙하게 재 확인이라도 시켜 주기라도 하는듯, 족히 100여 미터는 되고도 남을 낭떠러지 아래서, 아직 반짝반짝 녹슬지 않은 자동차의 잔해가 파묻혀 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다.

 

같이 타고 가던, 이 동네 산다는 아저씨에게 물어보니, 아니 글쎄! 며칠전도 아닌 바로 어제 있었던 대형참사의 현장이란 것이었다. 역시 화물차를 개조한 노후차량으로, 주원인은 브레이크 파열로 인해,

 

그 자리에서 3명이 세상을 버렸고, 병원으로 옮겨서 6명이 더 세상을 떠남에 모두 9명이 사망하고 20여명이 중경상을 입었다는 사고현장이라며, 상기된 표정으로 설명을 해 주고 있었다.

 

자동차가 추락한 모습이 깡통 찌그러지듯 제멋대로 일그러져 있어, 그 안에 타고 있던 사람들의 참상이 대충 상상이 되고도 남음 이었는데, 사실 무엇보다도 나도 어제 저 버스를 타려고 했었다 는 것에, 온몸이 마비되면서 기절초풍 일보 직전이었다.

 

대부분의 라오스의 지방 소도시가 모두 비슷하듯이, 매일 하루1편 뿐인 대중교통편들이, 출발시간은 오전9시 경이지만, 승객이 적당히 채워지면 기사가 알아서 출발, 어젠 정해진 시간보다 1시간이나 먼저 출발하여 버렸던 것,

 

난 그 버스를 놓치고, 어쩔 수 없이 꼬박 하루를 더 기다려서, 오늘에 야 롱산으로 향하고 있었던 것인데, 정말 나로선 그 차를 탈 수 없었던 것이 다행 중 행운이었다는 생각에 한숨이 절로 나올 수밖에 없었는데,

 

지 아무리 간이 배 밖으로 나온 여행을 하고 있기는 했지만, 실제 나도 별수 없는 사람인지라, 내 눈 앞에 펼쳐진 사고 현장에, 혹시 나도 그 사상자 속에 한 명이 될 뻔 한, 처참한 광경 앞에선, 남의 일 같지만은 않았는데,

 

평소 같으면 당연 서둘러서 나섰을 터인데, 어제는 그 놈의 맥주 덕분에, 아니 그 맥주님 덕분에 다 늦게 잠을 청하면서, 당연 늦게 일어난 덕택에, 차를 놓쳐 버렸던 것이, 오히려 한잔 술이 나를 살렸다는 생각이 들면서,

 

아직 나의 운명은 여기서 끝이 아님을 일깨워 주고 있었음에, 가끔 결정적인 불행도 묘하게 나를 피해 가고 있었음에, 만감이 교차되면서, 정말 한치 앞도 모르고 살고 있는 운명이란 생각에, 피가 꺼꾸로 솟구치며 전율할 수밖에 없었다.

 

그렇게 강열한 한 낮의 열기에도 불구하고, 냉정한 산속의 위엄은 섬뜩하게, 더위도 아랑곳없이 제법 싸늘하게 온 몸을 파고 들면서, 그 정도가 더 이상 말로는 표현이 안될 정도로, 노출된 피부를 움츠려 들게 하고 있었다.

 

그렇지만 잠시 후, 막상 롱산에 도착하고 보니, 한편으론 그저 사이솜분을 가기 위해 그 많은 날들을 투자해서, 그 먼 길을 돌아 여기까지 왔음에, 지금 한 발짝 더 가깝게 다가서고 있었음에, 그저 안도의 한숨 뿐,

 

더 더욱 조용하고 아담한 산골마을 롱산의 정겨움이, 웬 지 친근하게 나를 반겨주는 것 같아, 지가 무슨 용 가리 통뼈라도 되는 줄 착각하고 있는, 이기적인 나의 욕심은, 오늘도 내 속에서 꿈틀꿈틀,

 

어제의 참상도, 벌써 잊어버리고 있었다. 하지만 아직 갈 길은 남아 있었고, 함께 달려온 일행들은 롱산에서 사이솜분까지는 다시 10시간 정도를, 오늘 지나온 길보다 더욱 험준한 도로를 넘고 또 넘어 가야 한다고 하고 있었다.

 

또한 오늘 타고 온 자동차도, 이미 저무는 햇살에 밀려, 당연 야간통행은 불가하여, 여기 롱산까지만 운행 한다고 하면서, 잠시 후 정차를 알려 왔기에, 일단 여기서 내려서 쉬어 갈 수밖에 없었음에, 조금은 앞으로 갈 길들이 걱정이 될 수밖에 없었다.

 

그리고 다음 구간의 대중교통편도 하루 한 편 뿐, 매일 오전 8시경에 만 출발 한다고 하니, 이미 오늘 차편도 벌써 출발을 했음 이었기에, 내일 아침 출발할 자동차를 타기위해선, 근처에서 하루를 묶고 갈 수밖에 없게 되었다.

 

다행히 어제까지 누적된 피로에 지친 두발에게는, 오랜만에 연 이은 자동차 여행의 호강을 베풀어 주고 있었기에, 조금은 여유 있는 산골의 밤을 맞이할 수 있을 것 같았음에, 숙소를 정하고, 저녁을 먹기 전, 소박한 롱산을 두리번 두리번

 

산책을 하고 있었는데, 그런 이방인의 눈앞에, 정겨움을 선사하기라도 하듯, 강가에 몰려나와서 목욕하는 라오스 사람들의 모습들에, 눈동자가 고정되고 있었다. 외지인 특이 이방인에게는 오픈 된 공간에서의 이색적인 풍경일 수밖에 없었는데,

 

특히 약속이라도 한 것처럼, 한결 같은 여자들의 일관된 모습들에 포커스가 맞춰지면서 어린아이에서 노인은 물론 젊은 아가씨들까지, 평소에 입고 다니던 긴치마를 가슴까지 올려 속살만을 가리고,

 

그 치마 사이로 불을 부어 넣으며 목욕을 하고 있었는데, 그 모습들이 어찌나 재미있고 정겨웠는지 절로 미소를 머금게 하고 있었음 이었다. 더 더욱 목욕을 마치고 돌아가는 모습들은, 그 몸매를 그대로 들어 내 놓고 있는 젖은 옷의 실루엣들이,

 

너무나 인간적이라고 밖에는 말할 수가 없었는데, 내 시선과 혹여 마주 치는 그들의 시선이, 혹시라도 성희롱이라고 눈살을 찌푸리기면 어쩌나, 도저히 사진은 찍을 수는 없어 그저 힐끔힐끔 쳐다보기만 하고 있었다.
