On the 111th day of my solo trip to Laos, yes, it’s time to start again!
Day 111 of my solo trip to Laos, yes, it’s time to start again!
Today, I traveled by boat from Pak Nai to Xanamkan for two hours.
It seemed they had moved quite south, as the hot wind was being felt. It felt like I was sinking deeper into summer, even deeper into midsummer. At the end of the rainy season, the shower that used to cool the midday heat every day has been missing for several days.
It was still definitely dry, and it didn’t seem like it was time for the rain to stop. I couldn’t see where the rain had gone, but as I walked through the glow of light, I was already soaked through—no, completely soaked, soaking wet.
The midday heat felt well above 40 degrees, and the heat on my toes not only heated the earth but also boiled the flowing river, making me sweat relentlessly intensely.
In any case, we were gradually leaving the northern mountainous region of Laos and entering the basin of the central region, but the first greeting was so intense that we could barely keep our senses, and it was judged impossible to march any longer at midday around noon.
I concluded that it would be best to travel around early morning and late afternoon. So, although we are walking through the hottest season in Laos and still walking in an illusion, we are about to travel to the hottest regions,
As the Laos trip gradually neared its end, I wondered if this heat might be the final hurdle of the trip, and I resolved to endure it and forced myself to endure it. Fortunately, I saw a river opening right in front of me, and I was even delighted,
Come to think of it, the Mekong River, which had been invisible for a while, suddenly rushed over the dense mountains and rushed back out of breath, probably bursting out onto the plains like me, starting to run across the border between Thailand and Laos. Right now, in the open view, it transforms into a straight river stretching out.
I wondered if it had even shown up in my chest. The best part is that if you follow the waterway from here, you can be pushed by the cool Mekong winds and reach my next intermediate destination, Vientiane, the capital of Laos, in about 6~7 hours without walking.
However, for some reason, the urge to walk more still became urgent, so I decided to focus on walking a bit more and decided to skip taking the ferry to Vientiane for now. But surprisingly, if you want to walk along the road about 60 kilometers to Nam Hong, another border city with Thailand,
There are no detours at all. If I insisted on walking, I felt I would have no choice but to give up on heading to Namhong right away. But the problem is, here, to head inland to Laos, especially toward Vientiane, you inevitably must cross the river,
For now, they absolutely had to take the boat. In the end, I had no choice but to take about two hours on the Mekong River, drift downstream, and then detour inland to head straight to the capital, Vientiane. But the plan was postponed again and decided to stick to the original plan.
Of course, all I have is time, so from now on, I have to tour Vientiane Province extensively, then pass through the northern part of Luang Prabang and the northeastern part of Sieng Khong Province, rejoin the Mekong River, and head south in earnest to reach Xang Pha Sak Province, located at the southernmost point of Laos on the Cambodian border.
Thinking there was no need to rush, suddenly! The road ahead is still long, but when I first set out, walking around Laos felt so far, but now I’ve traveled through all 16 provinces of Laos,
Thinking about how I’ve walked about 10,000 km in just over a year brings a sense of nostalgia, and I even feel proud of myself. Looking back, it feels like rebellion against the world without reckless recklessness, when there is nothing left to do,
It was the start of a desperate trip, but after walking hard, I was lucky enough to say that this trip had enough meaning in its own way, so enjoying this feeling a bit more wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Of course, I don’t want to calculate any achievements or profits, nor do I want to imitate a third-rate philosopher who has mastered the world. I just want to say that I’m simply satisfied walking in the precious feeling of nature that I couldn’t know in my half-lifetime.
A life that was absurd, clinging to my own little head, wandering in the illusion of perfection, relying on futile tricks, obsessed with my own little head—now I can only begin to understand a little, just a little, just as heaven and earth have seen me all this time.
But in any case, I have to live without knowing a single inch ahead—even if it’s a life in a fog where I know nothing, in a way, I knew nothing and have no choice but to come this far, facing a very small fate that is insignificant.
No matter how much I struggle, whether I come into this world or leave, I realize the importance of never overlooking the fact that I am penniless and that I have nothing that belongs to me. Even my body, which I am thinking about now, is only something I borrowed for a moment.
What was it that made me so attached to and imagine a happiness that was only a facade? Now, without knowing the simple yet beautiful happiness of non-possession that I always kept inside, I feel so ashamed of the years I have hurriedly lived through the years,
Walking through the great outdoors and forest, I just feel empty, but even now, fortunately, in the face of the remaining time, I always share the comfort of ‘starting now,’ and I feel that I have no choice but to walk, and that I must keep walking, as if I am certain I can do it.
This was because, after all, I was not just walking on my shell, but now I could realize that my heart within it was walking alongside it, allowing me to walk with a humble heart. In such a free imagination and leisurely great nature,
Now, because I am walking, I dare to be happy, but imagination is free. “My own world that no one else can replace.” No matter how difficult or exhausting it is, I want to be proud of myself that I can still walk and that I am now with myself.
And so, even today, as the sun sets for the first day, my steps lean against the sunset are busily moving around looking for a place to lie down, just to rest a weary shadow. Yet perhaps this path right now,
It is like a very vivid poem, or just as it is, like a very impressive painting. Thus, I feel narcissistic, and today I am searching for a small poem and a small painting of my life, small but pure and beautiful.
But I feel like I’m a bit late, and I worry I might collapse at any moment, so I urge myself to say, “Starting is always halfway done,” and that once you start now, you’re already halfway there. I just promise myself that I’m grateful that I’m coming to see me every day.
