Day 103 of my solo trip to Laos, a night filled with regret, a night filled with joy
Today, I rode an elephant 27km from Tarek to Sayaboury.
Thanks to yesterday’s extended midnight barbecue party, today the slightly late morning marked the start of the final schedule of the reluctant elephant trek. When I arrived at Sanyaburi in the afternoon, I found that the companion I had grown attached to for days and the farewell to the elephant were waiting without fail.
Finally, in the afternoon, we left behind the beautiful and dull forest and set out onto a road steeped in the strong scent of the city. The number of cars and people passing by kept increasing, and the structure of the houses appeared on the roadside with a somewhat stylish appearance, welcoming us.
But as the time of the mountain felt closer, the regretful time stirred up even the sadness of the parting, making me cry even more over the pain of parting. All I wanted was, at best, just to circle the world like this.
But for that, everything was far removed from reality—just the wishful thinking of a naive traveler. It was a funny gesture, unaware of the excesses of a petty trek, and I comforted myself, thinking this far was a stroke of luck for me, and soothing my heart.
Before we knew it, we had completely left the forest and entered the city, receiving envious gazes from people we met on the street, waving our hands triumphantly as if we were some elephant troops’ triumphant general, savoring the last pleasure we wanted.
In the end, we arrived at our planned destination all the way to the heart of Sanyaburi city. But there was still something else left, and as soon as we arrived, everyone thought they would part ways, but since it was an unavoidable one-night stay in Sanyaburi,
We had no choice but to stay together until tonight, and with the extra day of our actual schedules to be together, we had to part ways tomorrow as we each went our separate ways. However, the set trekking schedule ended here, and everyone chose their own accommodation according to their circumstances,
All that remained was to freely spend time in Sanyaburi and say goodbye. Since I had to return to my original state and greet the morning of the march again tomorrow morning, I decided to take a brief look around the city to enjoy the remaining afternoon in Sanyaburi.
Tomorrow, Josh’s family would take a bus through Luang Prabang to Hanoi, Vietnam, with a long and challenging schedule still ahead. The elephants said they would go grocery shopping here in Sanyaburi today, then load up with daily necessities and return to Hong Sa.
Of course, I too had to trudge south along the Mekong River toward Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Therefore, to celebrate the safe completion of the trek, we first share warm handshakes and hugs as a sign of congratulations and joy for everyone,
We decided to take a short break of free time, find our own accommodation to rest, and then meet again in the evening for a brief party. Since I had to start the march early tomorrow morning, the first dawn, I planned to make good use of the remaining afternoon in Sanyaburi for gathering information and other activities.
I hurriedly explored the town of Sanyaburi, checked various useful information, and before attending the farewell party hosted by Josh’s family, I headed to the Sanyaburi Hotel located in the heart of the city. And so, with a wonderful beer party that also served as dinner,
The unforgettable elephant trek was coming to an end. The last thing I remember is that Josh said that although I had traveled to Canada before, if I ever come back again, I should contact him,
He would give me a note with an address and phone number, and even if I couldn’t come, if the travelogue I was writing was later published as a book, I would sign at least one book and ask him to send it to me.
No matter how his story was written, it was a precious connection his family met by chance while traveling in Laos. Even though the story was in Korean instead of English and the content couldn’t be read, he wanted to keep the meaning of the tentative name ‘walking to the sky’ of his Laos journey.
And not only did Josh move me to the end, Anna tried hard to hide her moist eyes and hugged her, then gave me a beautiful farewell kiss, so lovingly engraved on my cheek with luck—a touch that went beyond memories,
The beautiful final moments were delivered with deep shock. But meeting and parting—these were absolute joys and sorrows that piety could only accept in their given fate, so no further explanation was needed.
That last glass of farewell, which was so brief, was emptied, and the reality of having no choice but to turn away without leaving felt somehow resentful. Soon, in the darkness, faintly faint through the faint lights, the group all disappeared from the corner of their eyes,
The night at Sanyaburi, which is too precious to be remembered as mere memory, sadly deepened as if nothing had happened, leaving a brief but lasting impression on the lucky Sanyaburi Elephant trek.
