On the 100th day of my solo trip to Laos, suddenly! The gift Hongsa gave me.
Today, I rode an elephant for 25 km, from Hongsa to Purang.
From here in Hongsa to the next destination, Sanyaburi, is about 100 km, and given the road conditions, it would probably take me more than 4 nights and 5 days on foot, but this section was unexpectedly rare and densely forested, making it dangerous due to concerns about animal attacks.
Having already judged yesterday’s rough experience as fact, it was only natural to give up walking early. So, to use public transportation to Sanyaburi early in the morning, I went out to the terminal next to the market, which was not the one.
Although it was called a terminal, the facilities were just simple bus stops. Inside a ticket booth like a booth set up on one side, there was only one ticket attendant sitting alone at a single desk. According to him, there was only one bus per day to Sanyaburi.
The vehicle you will ride in. Not a bus, but a special four-wheel-drive pickup in a passenger car, loaded in the cargo compartment, unpaved for over eight hours, exposed unprotected in loess dust and dirt, and even on top of that, the mountain path was tense and tight.
I had to do some acrobatics to get there, but I could easily imagine it. However, the problem was that the fare was at least twice as high as for the same distance in other areas, and above all, the explanation alone made it clear that this was a tough and challenging course.
I thought about various things, but since I had no choice but to take the car, I decided to wait for the car for now. Waiting idly without doing anything, I was bored when a large elephant appeared near the market in front of my eyes.
Seeing a large elephant, you could only see at a zoo, right in the middle of the village, and even among people, carrying people along, was the first time I saw it pass by so casually, like cows or horses. Perhaps because it was the first time, I realized it was truly unique and made me feel bored.
In fact, I had long known this area as a famous elephant habitat but seeing it firsthand was truly fascinating. From Sanyaburi in Laos to Chiang Mai in Thailand, this area is the most populated area by ethnological taxonomy of the Lao Yi Sanh people,
This region has more natural conditions than any other region in Indochina suitable for elephant habitat, and it seemed to prove that it was once a historic kingdom of elephants (the Langshuang Dynasty) inhabited by enormous numbers of elephants.
However, nowadays, their numbers have sharply declined, and even in this region, they can only be found in villages deep in the mountains. Although they are strong, their gentle nature and their ability to follow people well despite their size, making them useful as substitutes for multipurpose excavators in certain mountain regions.
It was often used for trekking by foreign travelers upon request. But the bus to Sanyaburi, which was supposed to leave at 8 o’clock, was already well past 10 and still hadn’t appeared, which made me start to get annoyed by the unexplained boredom.
As if they understood my feelings, three more elephants suddenly swarmed out of nowhere, and as soon as they stood before me, they stopped abruptly. Wow~ One of the elephant’s feet felt bigger than my size, and I couldn’t hide my shock,

One man and two women were riding separately, and on the slightly smaller elephant lay backpacks and bundles that looked like some travel gear. It was clear briefly that it was an elephant trekking scene that had only been heard of in words. I stared at her with envy, lost in thought,

Come to think of it, the elephant driver was happy to have public funds, Anna was happy to have friends, Josh and his wife had an interpreter, and above all, I was glad I could do elephant trekking at a very affordable price I never imagined. Everyone was delighted, and they were undoubtedly a fantastic team.

나홀로 라오스여행 100째날, 불쑥! 홍사가 내게 준 선물.
오늘은 홍사에서 푸랭까지, 코끼리를 타고 25km를 갔다.
여기 홍사에서부터, 다음 목적지인 산야부리까지는, 약100km 정도의 거리로, 도로 사정 상, 내 걸음으론 약 4박5일 이상 소요될 듯싶은데, 이 구간은 예상 밖으로 인가가 드물고 숲이 우거져, 짐승들의 습격이 우려 되어 위험하다는 것이었다.
이미 어제 험난한 경험을 사실로 미루어, 짐작이 가고도 남음 이기에, 일찌감치 걷는 것은 포기하는 것이 당연 할 수밖에 없었다. 그래서 아침 일찍 일어나 산야부리로 향하는 대중교통편을 이용하기 위해, 시장 옆에 위치한 터미널 아닌 터미널로 나갔다.
말이 터미널이지, 시설은 간이 정류장의 시설에 불과 했는데, 한 쪽에 마련된 원두막 같은 매표소 안에, 달랑 책상 하나에 덩그러니 혼자 앉아 있는 매표원 한 명 뿐, 그의 말에 의하면 산야부리까지 가는 차량은 하루, 단 한편 뿐.
타고갈 차량은. 버스도 아닌 승용차 형 특수 4륜 구동 픽업, 아무래도 짐칸에 실려, 장장 8시간 이상을 비포장, 황토 흙 먼지 속에 무방비로, 노출된 채 가야하고, 그것도 모자라 아슬아슬 산길을, 가슴을 조여가며
곡예라도 하며 가야 함인데, 충분히 상상이 될 수 있었다. 그러나 문제는 이용요금이 다른 지역의 같은 거리에 비해, 배 이상을 지불해야 한다는 것인데, 무엇보다 설명만으로도, 결코 만만치 않은 험준한 코스 란 것이 분명했다.
이런저런 생각을 해 보았지만, 역시 선택의 여지가 없어, 어쩔 수 없이 타고 갈 수밖에 없음이기에, 일단 자동차를 기다리기로 했다. 마냥 하는 일 없이 기다리 려니, 심심하던 차에, 저만치 시장 앞으로 커다란 코끼리가 눈가에 들어왔다.
동물원에서나 볼 수 있었던, 커다란 코끼리를, 마을 한복판에서, 그것도 사람들 사이를, 사람까지 태우고 지나 가는데, 꼭 소나 말 같이 스스럼없이 지나치는 것을 보기는, 처음 이어서 인지, 참으로 이색적임에 무료함을 달랠 수 있었다.
사실 이지역은, 오래전부터 코끼리 서식지로, 유명한 지역이라고 알고는 있었지만, 막상 코 앞에서 직접 목격을 하고 보니, 신기하기만 했다. 라오스의 산야부리에서 태국의 치앙마이까지는, 민족 분류학상 라오 이산 족이 가장 많이 거주하는 지역으로,
이 지역은, 인도차이나의 어느 지역보다도 코끼리가 서식하기에 좋은, 자연환경조건 등을 가지고 있어, 말 그대로 예전에는 엄청난 코끼리들이 서식한, 역사적인 코끼리들의 왕국(랑쌍왕조)이었다는 것을 증명하는 듯 싶었다.
그러나 지금은, 그 수가 급격이 줄어 들면서, 이 지역에서도 깊은 산악지대의 마을 등에서나 볼 수 있는데, 힘이 세지만 덩치에 비해 온순하고 사람을 잘 따르는 특성 때문에, 산속 특정 지역의 다목적 포크레인 대용 등으로 이용되면서,
종종 요청에 따라 외국여행객들의 트레킹에도 활용되고 있음이란 것이었다. 그런데 8시에 출발한다는 산야부리행 자동차는 벌써10가 훨씬 지났는데도 나타나 질 않고 있어, 괜 시리 지루함에 짜증까지 나기 시작했다.
그런 내 맘을 알기라도 한 듯, 어디선가 불쑥 또 다른 코끼리 3마리가 우르르 몰려 나타나서는, 그것도 내 앞에 와서는 우뚝 멈추는 것 이였다. 우~와 코끼리의 발 하나가 내 덩치보다도 크게 느껴지면서, 놀란 입을 다물 수가 없었는데,
그냥 얼핏 보아도, 대략 3미터 정도의 키에, 몸무게는 4톤 정도가 충분, 가히 중장비를 무색케 함이 틀림없었다. 그런데 두 마리의 코끼리 위에는, 각각 코끼리 조련사로 보이는 남자 2명과 외국인 여행객으로 보이는,
남자 한 명과 여자 두 명이 나누어 타고 있었고, 조금 작은 코끼리 위에는, 약간의 여행 짐으로 보이는 배낭과 짐 꾸러미가 실려 있었다. 말로만 듣던 코끼리 트레킹 장면임을 한 눈에 알 수 있었다. 부러운 마음에 넋을 놓고 쳐다보고 있는데,
코끼리 등위에서 “어디로 가느냐?”고 내게 묻는 듯싶은, 귀에 익은 영어가 들려오는 것 이였다. 무심결에 “산야부리까지 간다“고 했더니, 웬일인지 서양인 남자가 코끼리에서 잠시 내리는 수고까지 하며, 본격적으로 말을 걸어오는 것 이였다.
그는 우선 여행객이냐고 물었고, 나는 “그렇다“고 대답을 했더니, 그는 한마디로 “우리도 지금 코끼리를 타고 산야부리로 여행하고 있는데, 괜찮다면 함께 가지 않겠냐?”는 것이었다. 그리곤 내가 대답도 하기도 전,
그는 “마침 자리가 하나 남아 있는데, 4박5일 코스로 숙식이 모두 제공되는 트레킹“이라고 설명하면서, 다시 동행 의사를 묻는 것이었다. 하지만 무전여행에 웬 사치, 물론 내 입장에선 같이 가고 싶은 마음이야, 정말 두말하면 잔소리지 만,
그저 배낭여행 중 “주머니 사정이 여의 치 못해, 미안하다.”고 할 수밖에 없었다. 그런데 뜻 밖에도 “그것은 걱정 안 해도 된다“며 “이미 우리가 1인당 100불씩 당신 요금까지 400불(USD)을 모두를 지불했으니,
그냥 당신은 산야부리까지 가는 자동차 요금 정도만, 차후 트레킹이 끝나면서 코끼리 조련사에게 팁으로 주면 된다“고 하는 것이었다. “아니, 이건 또 무슨 웬 횡재인가!” 싶어 “너무너무 고맙다“는 말과 함께, 무조건 “OK, Good” 할 수밖에 없었다.
그는 빙그레 웃으며 “자신은 캐나다인으로 이름은 조쉬“라고 하며 악수를 청하는 것 이였다. 나도 얼른 그의 손을 덥석 붙잡고는 “나는 한국인으로 라오스를 여행중인 큔에스 서“라고 간단히 소개를 주고 받았다.
그리고 그는 다시 두 명의 여자들을 가리키며 “자신의 부인과 딸“이라고 하면서, 이어서 죠쉬는 “나이는 37세, 캐나다 토론토의 아름다운 나이아가라 폭포 근처에 살고 있으며 직업은 의사(신경외과) 이며,
다시 부인을 가리키며, 동갑내기 대학동창으로 역시 직업은 의사(소아과)였고, 그들의 딸은 이제 10살을 갓 넘은 이름이 “애나“로 예쁘장한 말괄량이” 라고 소개했다. 그리고 조금 전 “자신들이 산야부리로 트레킹을 막 출발하면서,
코끼리 기사가 버스 정류장에 서 있는 외국인으로 보이는 나를 발견, 외국인 여행객이지만 영어와 라오스말을 할 수 있는 것 같다며, 나를 태우자는 제안을 하면서, 자신의 딸 애나가 동의, 우선 외모를 유심히 살펴본 결과.
잘 어울리는 블랙 진에, 검은색 라운드티셔츠를 받쳐 입고, 베이지색 배낭을 메고 남색 랜드로버를 신고, 회색 카우보이 모자에 덥수룩한 하얀 턱수염이, 어쩌면 동양인이지만, 전형적인 캐나다 카우보이 스타일이 잘 어울리는 모습으로,
혼자 여행을 하면서도, 말쑥하고 간소한 차림새가, 왠지 나쁜 사람 같지는 않을 것 같다는 생각이 들어, 부인과 상의하여 승낙을 하고는, 다가와 내 의사를 물었던 것“이라고, 과정을 설명하면서, 비행기까지 태워주고 있었다.
그래서 인지, 연실 곁눈질을 하고 있는 딸내미 애나가 더 없이 예쁜 요정처럼 보이더니, 정말 행운의 여신이 불쑥 내민. 바야흐로 꿈의 코끼리 트레킹이, 넝쿨째 쏟아진 것이 아닌가 싶기만 했다. 그렇게 전격적인 만남 속에
잠시 후, 코끼리 기사에게, 라오스어로 내 소개와 아울러 자세한 일정을 물었더니, 그는 역시 라오스어를 조금 하는 줄 알았는데 의사소통에 전혀 문제가 없음에 놀랍다며, 반갑게 자신의 이름이 “싼“이라고 했다.
그렇게 우리 두 사람이 라오스어로 대화하는 말을 듣고 있던 죠쉬 역시, 내가 라오스어를 잘 하는 것이 의외였다며, 그렇지 않아도 코끼리 기사의 너무나 짧은 영어실력 때문에 의사소통에 불편이 많았는데, 아주 잘 됐다고, 무척 반가워하는 것 이였다.
그러고 보니, 코끼리 기사는 공돈이 생겨 좋고, 애나는 친구가 생겨 좋고, 죠쉬 부부는 통역안내가 생겨 좋고, 무엇보다 나는 상상도 못했던 코끼리 트레킹을 아주 저렴하게 할 수 있어 좋고, 모두가 기쁜 마음으로, 환상의 한 팀이 된 것이 틀림없었다.
더 더욱, 잠깐 사이 자동차가 코끼리로 바뀌는, 감격적 이변을 겪으면서, 역시 호강에 넘치는 행운을 얻은 내가, 오늘의 으뜸인 것이 분명했는데, 지금 나에게 죠쉬 가족은, 어느 날 쨘~ 하고 나타난 천사들이 틀림없었다.
아니, 천사 라기 보다는, 신들의 배려라고 해도 과언이 아닌 듯, ‘의약의 신, 이라큐라스’ ‘강의 여신, 하이지이아’ 그의 딸 ‘청춘의 여신, 하이비’가 한꺼번에 내게 손을 내밀어 준 것이 아닌가 싶기만 했다.
특히 하이비가 찾아올 때는, 언제나 그 곳에 생동감 넘치는 봄이 피어난다고 했으니, 이 얼마나 엄청난 축복이 함께 하고 있음이 아닌가! 정말 “위기 뒤에는 찬스라고 했듯이, 이렇게 나의 신들의 올림푸스는 그리 멀지 않은 곳에서
언제나 나를 지켜보고 있었던 것으로. 어제, 아니 그 동안에 쌓였던 피로가 한꺼번에 물 씻은 듯이 사라지고, 환한 미소 만이 나와 함께 하고 있음에 그저 나는 감동 또 감동, 정말 신나는 오후, 꿈인지 생신지, 비몽사몽, 그저 즐겁기만 했다.
