Part 3 Under the Burning Sun!

On the 81st day of my solo trip to Laos, Sabadi Bimai!

Today, I walked 22 km from Lao Sen to Bou Amphong.

At dawn, I finally sighed, and I got up from my seat, rubbing my eyes. At the end, she was so calm that she was fast asleep, leaving only a light kiss on her sexy forehead, and she had no choice but to quietly leave the house as planned.

The clock pointed to a little past 4 a.m., but it was still buried outside in the middle of the night. Starting to walk on the quiet mountain road that everyone is still immersed in a dream of, Ending the honeymoon in the forest that cannot be achieved like that,

All the dreams of the two days had disappeared, and I was walking back to reality. However, I wanted to remember the time I spent here today for a long time and keep it deep in my heart. It’s been a long time since my wife’s house disappeared,

Because of her innocent appearance, which is still so vivid, she was moving step by step, step by step, with only the prayer of “be truly happy forever” in the heavy steps that did not fall and encapsulated cultural differences.

The regret of leaving a sad and beautiful flower deer in the forest, which was fading as time passed, was already gradually turning into longing, and I was even entangled in the desire to go back.

However, reality was still hastening my steps, and I was slowly waking up from my dream as I faced the reality that became clearer as dawn dawned as rain dawned. But what is it to live! What is the relationship?

One day, I was wondering how the relationship I met by chance was more than a memory that I would remember forever, and how it could be with me. Come to think of it, I was blurred by the dream of the newlyweds, but the year that had been so long between yesterday and today has come to an end.

Once again, the first sun of the year is rising in red, and following the New Year on January 1, which is celebrated by the whole world in the new year of Lao Sung, the official third Lao Lunar New Year holiday (the same as our Chinese New Year holiday) ‘Bi Mai’,

The festival holiday was about to begin. Laos begins the first New Year’s Eve of the Asian alpine people, ‘Kim Triang’, in November and December every year, and the second New Year’s Eve ‘New Year’ is celebrated on January 1 of the calendar commonly used by people around the world.

In Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar, until the third New Year’s Eve in April every year, people in Indochina enjoyed New Year’s Eve three times a year. After a while, I got out of the dirt road and climbed back onto the finely paved asphalt road.

As I also encountered the dawn, I could see that all the scenery of the mountain villages here was busy as they passed one year and welcomed another, and that they were moving according to their own prepared procedures.

In this way, each village was filled with the enthusiasm of a small festival in the form of a New Year’s Thanksgiving, and in a slightly larger village, a little more spacious households rushed to hold individual events, and in a little smaller village, the entire village became one and everyone started the festival together.

Wherever they go, alcohol and meat are served, buried in sweet traditional music that seems to leave the whole neighborhood, and men and women of all ages dance rambong (traditional dance unique to Laos, folk dance such as Arirang in Korea) in traditional costumes.

On top of the richness of the year, they shared gratitude that never overflowed with each other, whether it was small or small, large or large, and in accordance with the fountain, and wished for unchanging luck in the new year that was always welcomed.

In fact, the original proper name for welcoming the new year in Laos can be said to be between April 10th and 15th every year, but if you think about it, it has already begun the New Year from November last year to March this year.

In the homes of ordinary Laotians, it is called “Haebun”, which is the form of a thanksgiving festival, and from December onwards, each village and each house chooses a slightly different day, and it is a small festival that lasts for 3~4 days at the longest.

In the end, it continued to this day with neighborhood feasts, and the Bimai holiday had already been held on the connection line for several months, and most of these days were held as Buddhist ceremonies at the temple located in the center of the village.

It was a social event in which all nearby villagers and tourists participated in the event and shared the joy by making and eating prepared food, especially rice noodles for health. Even more so, on weekends, you don’t have to eat at home.

It was common for all the villages to go back to their homes for 4~5 months, until today’s Bimai in April, when the farming season and the monks’ retreat began, and finally all the New Year’s festivals in Laos came to an end.

Indeed, it seemed that the Laotians must be enjoying the middle of winter with great enthusiasm, but when traveling to Laos during this period, you can see a lot of these scenes, so if you have good basic manners and know how to speak a few words of Laotian,

It is interesting to be able to participate in their festival sites as much as you want, and it is interesting to be able to enjoy the participation of foreigners because it is very interesting. However, the problem is that it is important to know how to speak a few basic Lao words.

Anyway, it is true that foreign languages such as English are not spoken at all in most areas, except for certain places in big cities, and there is no English for everyday life such as dollars, lights, motorcycles, taxis, bananas, and pineapples, which we commonly use.

Since everything is only in Lao, it is necessary to learn Lao at least a few words for self-protection and self-expression. Especially if you want to travel to the small cities and mountain villages of Laos, which are quite simple and compact,

Furthermore, if you familiarize yourself with a few words of Lao that are necessary for basic life, supplement your body language, and use it appropriately, you may not be able to make such a difficult trip, but rather a memorable trip where you can share a good drink.

Now, with all that said, if I were to list about 20 basic life paintings in Lao, they would be as follows.

“Sabaidee (Bhimai) – Hello? (Happy New Year)”

“Zhao Sunniang – what’s your name?”

“Cup Chai Lai Lai – thank you very much”

“Burr – it’s okay!”

“Kai Kong Kaori – I am Korean”

“Diony’s dream? – What time is it?”

“Pai Psy? – Where are you going?”

“Muan Bur? – Is it fun?”

“Muai Bur? Aren ‘t you tired?”

“Sweat – delicious”, “Sweat side – Cheers”

“Ngam – beautiful”, “Le – cool”

“D – good”, “Buddy – dislike”

“Geg – it hurts”

“Hiu Nam (Kaw) – I’m thirsty (hungry)”

“Lim Leo – I’m full”

“Pakpon Diver? Can you rest?”

“Medicine rice field – sleep comes”

“Taodai? – How much?”

“Sop Di – Good luck”

“Pogan Mai – See You Again”
