Like a flowing river

On the 79th day of my solo trip to Laos, the warmth of the
remote mountains

Today, I walked 18 km from Bontai to Aya.

Why is the sun rising in one day? It’s so short, but I don’t
think the distance I’m going to go today is that far. Although I was late in
the morning, I still walked hard all day, but I couldn’t see the village, and
darkness was already gathering.

In the sky, the Milky Way is holding up all the flesh and half
of it. I am walking while soaking my whole body in the starlight and comforting
the sweat droplets. After 8 o’clock, I managed to find a person and ask him to
sleep for the night, but even after about 30 minutes, he didn’t even answer,
let alone his face.

Obviously, I could sense the volume of the TV along with the
sound of people inside, but it didn’t show any signs of showing any signs of
it, so I felt that something was not going well, and I was secretly nervous.
However, since there was no other license on the side of the road, I couldn’t
stand back down like this.

Just as the poor guy said to dig a well, there was no other way
but to wait patiently. Finally, as it became popular, a young man who appeared
to be in his 20s appeared. When I asked him to sleep overnight, he listened and
just tried to throw it out.

I had no choice but to panic, but I quickly chased after him and
said he would give me money. Only then did I ask how much I was going to give
him, but I was relieved that I was speechless and told him about 30,000 kip
(about 3 US dollars).

Then he asked me to go to his house, and he said, “My house
has to go up a little mountain, is that okay?” It wasn’t the time to cover
up the cold or hot water, so I had no choice but to say “OK”
unconditionally. But for some reason, I started climbing the dark mountainside,

The slope was so steep that when I tried to straighten my back a
little, my body bent back~, and I couldn’t even think that there was a person
living on it. Still, I thought that I couldn’t be homeless in the mountains
tonight, so I had no choice but to trust and follow him……

Fortunately, the houses were still visible, so when I persevered
and climbed for about 30 minutes, I felt as if I had almost climbed to the top
of the mountain, and with a clear view, I pointed to the last house on the
ridge and said, “I’m all here.”

He barely breathed a sigh of relief and arrived at the front of
the house. In the house, there was a faint complaint about a
battery-rechargeable light bulb by the burning bonfire, and I could see an old
man, an old lady, and a few more people sitting there.

What kind of guy is everyone? The eyes were flying, and the hour
hand was dripping! I had no choice but to say “Sabaidi” first and go
inside. Soon after, a young friend introduced himself, saying, “My mother
and the butler next door are my little father and younger siblings.”

Then she pointed to me and explained to my mother, “I’m a
traveler, but I had to put you to sleep for one night, so I’m here.” Only
then did he make a seat by the campfire and invite him to sit down, but first
he took out the promised 30,000 kip and handed it to the owner.

He also hesitated and was reluctant to accept it. Still, he
forcibly held it in his hand, saying, “It’s okay to accept it because I’m
grateful for it.” As soon as I sat down on the fire like a hunchback, the
old man sitting in front of me suddenly offered me a glass.

When I touched the tip of my nose, it was the scent of Lao
vodka, which I was already familiar with, almost 50 degrees or more. I was a
little worried about eating on an empty stomach, but I couldn’t help but drink
it when I was happy to give it, so I closed my eyes and swallowed it in one
gulp.

However, before the warm feeling that ran down the throat had
disappeared, my hunger began to attack me, and I felt like I had to eat
anything in a hurry. I was grateful for the sleep, but I couldn’t ask them to
serve me food in the middle of the night.

I had no choice but to boil and eat the ramen noodles I had
prepared as emergency food. I pointed to the bonfire in front of me and asked
for forgiveness, and I asked for a pot to borrow first, filled it with water,
and put it on the fire.

Then, when I took out two Korean ramen noodles from my backpack
and put them in the pot, everyone’s eyes were focused on what they were.
However, I had no choice but to be busy pouring ramen noodles as soon as the
water boiled, without paying attention to local broadcasting.

Before I knew it, about 7~8 people were staring at me. It was
clear that the situation had become embarrassing to eat alone. I had no choice
but to ask for another bowl, and I took about half a bowl of ramen and soup.

There was no other way but to use the unwilling kindness that
was only given to the old man who handed him a drinking glass. After that,
despite being worried again, I was able to use chopsticks on ramen noodles by
myself, but in the blink of an eye, I ran out of all the soup.

“After all, when you’re hungry, ramen is the best!”
Only then did her outlook on life begin to change due to her satiety. I was
finally able to pay attention to the surrounding eyeballs and look at them.
However, the appearances I saw were not spectacular.

Most of the ladies were dressed in traditional costumes, and I
could only look at them as they were, but the others were chilling in the cold,
their lips trembling with bright blue, and they relied only on their shallow
clothes.

They were so pitiful that I felt pitiful. However, all those
expressions seemed bright and lively, so I had to finish the obligatory words
of the same questions and answers everywhere and quickly move on to the dream.

However, I couldn’t help but wonder why the conversation was
about to be talked about in the next full-fledged conversation, but wasn’t it
because I wanted to hear about Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Laos? It was the
people of Laos who were asking me about Laos, rather as a foreign traveler.

Everyone could see that they had never been outside of their
territory in the mountains. I had no choice but to take out my laptop and show
the photos I had taken as a slide with Korean songs. Everyone looks at me
curiously,

Even as the night deepened, they forgot to sleep, and everyone
was talking nonsense, and their appearances were so simple. After such an
interesting night in a mountain hut and a two-hour presentation on a trip to
Laos, I was so tired that I couldn’t play with him anymore.

That’s all for today, I said, “I’m too tired, I need to
rest,” and packed my bedding and went into my room. Then, as soon as I put
my head on the pillow, I had no choice but to fall off completely, but I was
still sorry for those sad eyes before I fell asleep.

Even though I was overwhelmed with dreams, I tried to engrave it
in the corners of my eyes with a simplicity that would be remembered for a long
time and even added a smile. However, I had no choice but to leave early
tomorrow morning, so I fell asleep quickly.
