<’day7, Indiana Jones’ younger brother ‘Indiana kyuns’ is here!>
It’s 3:30 a.m. The temple bells were
ringing without fail. Despite yesterday’s fatigue, I woke up early. The
surroundings were still covered in clay, and it was difficult to discern an
inch ahead. But today we have to march a little more.
It seemed that there should be no mishap of sleeping with the enemy in the mountains again. Reliable information was that about 30 kilometers ahead, across the border of the state of Sekong, the state of Salavan was waiting for me. I thought 30km might
be a bit unreasonable,
It was said that we had to go over a big
mountain, but for some reason, this section was deserted and there were no private houses, so it was a bit difficult to spend one night in the middle. It seemed that I had no choice but to avoid homelessness somehow and decide to force it.
I hurriedly gathered my things and set out
on the road, following the faint red light of dawn. After about 20 kilometers of what had been so secluded, Saraban got closer, and the houses along the road began to
take the form of inhabited houses. There
were more and more people welcoming me.
And the friendliness of the nameless
wildflowers that greeted me, the occasional autumn breeze, and the richness of the golden fields made me feel as if I had fallen into a painting, allowing me to soak up the
countryside atmosphere .
I saw that a small Lao snack house nearby, a neat bean hut, was waiting for me, and I had made it this far thanks to the glutinous rice I had eaten yesterday, but it was clear that it was time to make up something.
I didn’t have much money in my pocket, but
I still wanted to eat, so I thought, “Even if I go to Mt. Sansugap, I can eat it and the ghosts who died from eating it,” so I decided to take a break and eat. It’s already past lunchtime, so I’m the only guest.
After tasting the proper “Cao Piyak” (Lao makguksu) made with the benefits of all the spices for the first time in a long time, I realized that one bowl is not enough, and I feel like I have to fill my stomach while I
eat anyway.
With the excuse that I would quickly fill
up the satiety of a bowl before it cooled down, I called the hostess as if there was some kind of problem, and made a fuss about making another bowl as soon as possible, as if there was some kind of problem.
But the chef and owner had received the
order, and while he was preparing it, he tilted his head and said, “Is there a group of people?” Who’s going to come! As I did so, I brought another bowl of noodles and set them down on the seat opposite where I was sitting.
Then he said, “You’ll have to come before the noodles blow…” Then he looked out the door and worried. There was a smile on his lips, but instead of trying to explain it, I felt like I wanted to enjoy this atmosphere more because of the smell of deep acknowledgment after a long time.
Without hesitation, he pulled the noodles in front of me, swirled his chopsticks, and explained that he was eating them in a hurry. The lady who was watching looked stunned that I had eaten two bowls of soup in one fell swoop, contrary to her naïve expectations
.But I ignored it, and took it all too leisurely to pull out a cigarette and put it in my mouth. I wondered if she had been waiting for this moment or what she had been curious about, but she couldn’t help but say in unison, “Are you Japanese? ” and “Where and how do you get here? “Where are you going and why?” And that’s it.
I simply said, “I’m a Korean tourist, and I’m walking from Atapp to Pong Sali .” After all, “No! All the way to Pongsali, and that’s on foot…” At first glance, it was clear that I didn’t look like a human. I felt like I was going to be a crazy guy if I stayed any longer.
I felt like I had to change the subject as soon as possible, or I had to stand up, so I said, “I couldn’t eat breakfast, but I thought I was trying to eat this noodle soup,” and “Auntie’s noodles were so perfectly delicious that I wouldn’t even know if one of them died while eating them,” and then his expression changed.
He was nodding with a smile. Now that the situation is over, how much do you want to say goodbye? When I asked, I was told to pay not for two bowls, but for one and a half bowls. I don’t know what the case was, but this time I couldn’t help but tilt my head.
It turned out that the first bowl of noodles was too small, and he felt sorry for himself and couldn’t pay for both bowls. I couldn’t help but be deeply moved by the lady’s simple words, but I was just grateful that she thought about my pocketbook and cut it for me.
However, I felt that it was too much for anyone to order two bowls of country hospitality and pay half the price of a bowl of rice cake. However, I didn’t think it would be polite to ignore what I was asking for, so I took off the Ussuri and paid a little less than the price of the two bowls.
However, if I really wanted to get the price of a bowl and a half, I would have needed change, but it just so happened that I didn’t seem to have any change. As if he had become the younger brother of “Indiana Jones”, as if he were using a lot of patience in consideration of the social position of “Indiana”,
“That’s all I got,” he said, and walked out of the noodle shop triumphantly, as if imitating Harrison Ford in the movie. Anyway, when I thought about my gratitude once again for the generosity of the countryside, I couldn’t help but feel a tickle in the back of my head, but she was still looking at me with a sad face.
I waved my hand at the old lady and said to myself, “Apparently she didn’t get rich by selling noodles,” and added a blood~style laugh, and started walking hard again. But after all, the midday sun, as if not funny what I was doing, and jealous of my arrival in Salavan,
He glared fiercely and dug into the exposed skin, pouring hot on it. Still, I managed to get two bowls of noodles and after 11 hours of hard work, I broke through 30 kilometers and finally arrived at Salavan, even though there was still a lot of brightness left.
However, as it is said that high expectations lead to great disappointment, and as the name of the Heavenly Village suggests, the expectations were high, but Saraban did not charm me, but only disappointed me. I walked another 2~3 kilometers to go around the city, but the only thing I found was that it was the capital of Sarabanju with a population ofabout 2~30,000.
Except for the fact that it is a little bigger than the other countryside that I have seen on my way here, I have not been able to escape the atmosphere of Attaphu and Sekong, and I have not found any characteristics of Saraban to speak of.I was taking such an unassuming time, and before I knew it, dusk was gathering.
However, the dim light of the long rows ofstreet lamps on the road, which seemed to have been unfamiliar for a while, was a little compared to the light of the moon and the stars, but gradually the accumulated fatigue intensified the desire to rest, and I was busy looking for a suitable place to lie down.
Above all, in the remote mountain villages, whether it was a suitable booth or a hut, if it was inhabited, they welcomed guests from far away with their characteristic shyness and welcome, and said, “Suwaide” (help me), and most of the time, I said, “Is it okay if I am shabby?”
Most of them were welcoming, with the exception of Salavan, which is a fairly large town with a large number of people, and although everyone I met was friendly, they were clearly asking for a reasonable price, which made me feel embarrassed as I was on a tight budget.
He didn’t want to move anymore, as if it wasn’t enough for him to walk any longer. I tried to find a suitable inn if possible, but even so, the hospitality of Saraban, the capital of the state, was completely different from that of the daytime makguksu.
I had no choice but to use my emergency fund to look around at a few guesthouses nearby, slash the price of accommodation to find the cheapest one, and once I got out of the shower, I ate a bowl of kaupak (fried rice) at the restaurant next door.
But as I went to bed and thought about it, I thought to myself that the Laotians had seen me sometime, that they weren’t all hukou, and that my little kid was a carrot, that I was a punsu who had hoped for nothing in the harshness of the city, and that I would never be able to do anything on the road I was going to take.
