On the 78th day of my solo trip to Laos, thinking about the value of my life
Today, I walked 25 km from Banyo to Bontay.
As I walk the same today, I suddenly look at the cultural life of the Lao people, first, the idea is still classic in the 19th century, but the way of life has already accepted the 20th century, gradually becoming mechanized and scientific, and the tools of life have far surpassed the times.

They don’t know how to beep and use cell phones. They already know that TV is only color TV from the beginning, and they don’t know black and white TV and watch color TV, and they also use satellite antennas to watch various broadcasts from all over the world in their mountain rooms.
Although they prefer simplicity and simplicity and are modern, they absolutely insist on traditions and customs, and the important thing is that they live very frugally. Laos is a country of Lao Annam Mountains, which stretch from north to south and are connected by large and small mountains.
Due to the influence of the Mekong River, which flows through the country for a long time, electricity resources, which are the most essential energy element for mechanization, are abundant, and electricity is even exported to neighboring Vietnam and Thailand, so in any village in the mountains of Laos, except for a few places in the mountains where real people are rarely visited.
It is inhabited by people, but it has basic cultural life elements to the extent that there is no place without electricity. However, the problem is that the first thing in using electricity in mountain villages is economic ability, and there is no regular source of income to rotate cash.
In other words, since there is no money to pay the electricity bill, we have no choice but to restrain and save as much as possible, and of course, saving according to realistic economic conditions is inevitable, but one of the important reasons is that there is no tool to use electricity except for one or two indoor lamps.
Also, due to the structural characteristics of the house, the exterior wall made of bamboo is woven at night, and when the light is turned on, the house can be seen from the outside, so you must be careful about changing clothes in the house in the early evening.
To protect the privacy of personal privacy are interesting reasons to refrain from using electricity. In addition, even if you look at the living conditions in the house, the room is all about tools such as a closet, closet, or chest of drawers where you can put a few pieces of clothes and bedding.
It is also suitable for the purpose of use, and there are only a few pots and plates in the kitchen, and there are no other cooking utensils or spoons and chopsticks that are necessary.
Of course, when preparing meals, even if waiting and hassle are inevitable due to lack of tools, there are no complaints about the lack at all, and both parties are calm with each other. If you don’t have a spoon and chopsticks here, you can’t help but wonder how you eat.
The answer is very simple.Since the left hand is mainly used in the bathroom, the fingers of the right hand are used to eat by themselves, which is a reality that can be seen anywhere in the mountains, the city center, or anywhere in Laos, but there is always a fire for washing hands in front of the table in any house, such as a restaurant in the city center.
This confirms this. Also, even the lifestyle of enjoying a bath every day at the end of the day is that they are living faithfully and satisfied with themselves with the least number of methods and tools, in a spiritual abundance that cannot be said to be poor even though they are never poor.
It must be a realistic life unique to them, which can be said to be more hygienic, rational, and frugal than us. I thought that these were things that we needed to think about, as we had once fallen into the laziness of materialism and brought about laziness on ourselves.
The problem is that to satisfy the desire to be more comfortable, we have no choice but to sell our sacred spirit while giving up our freedom only for the competitive possession of goods that have broken our limits.
But even so, a healthy human body always requires a certain amount of necessary exercise, and in fact, that amount of exercise must move anyway, so if there is natural instinctive labor without greed, it is enough.
In the use of time and space for human physical recharge, moderate labor that has no choice but to move anyway can be sufficient. However, the reason why they try to avoid even that is because it is only the reality of laziness according to external comfort.
This is a factor that is struggling with the only precious mental health. He said, “A healthy mind emanates from a healthy body.” In the wrong idea that money can be spent to lose weight, pay for aerobic exercise, and avoid even the slightest instinctive exercise,
In the end, due to resistance and weakened immunity, they are creating an incurable disease for themselves, while if you look at the life of Laos yourself, they never become slaves to money or try to exchange anything for money in their daily lives.
I could see that I was exercising human wisdom, fulfilling my responsibilities and obligations to the best of my ability at the given time, without lacking, excess, laziness, or diligence, and by adapting everything to my abilities and meeting only within the limits of what I could do.
Farmers do not overwork themselves to get a large harvest but simply sow a little more than what is necessary, and those who do business are not driven by greed that the goods sell well but only bring in the goods as they originally planned to sell.
And in the spare time, he generously loves for himself and his family and spends his free time. He is practicing that human beings come first rather than money. “Did you give birth to people and give birth to money; did you give birth to money and give birth to people?” These were the things that made us not forget the very ordinary truths.
So, are we living without knowing these facts? It is a question, but surprisingly, all of these are facts that we are familiar with on a daily basis. It’s just that we’re busy making a living, or we have money, so what are we worried about?

When you start with such a small daily life and make it your own, you can finally feel that you are living in the world, that you can truly live in the world, and that you can be free from yourself. Is that so? About the satisfaction and success that I misunderstand even now,
I thought that we should quickly break away from materialism and money omnipotence in our time. It has been said since ancient times that in order to protect wealth, millionaires must live with a million worries, and millionaires must live with ten million worries.
However, people often say that no matter how much you worry, you should live with a lot of money. Of course, I was no exception. Now, when I see them while traveling, I see that they “don’t put spider webs in the mountains,” and if you move and work hard, you can at least eat and live.
If so, it is undeniable. It is undeniable that more than that leads to laziness and luxury, and that you will abuse yourself. In the end, how much do you live if you live, and do you have to live by selling your soul?
For the sake of the world of free souls, for me, my family, and all those who love me, keep in mind the small duties and responsibilities that I can practice sharing with, starting from the smallest things, if it is something I can do,

나홀로 라오스여행 78째날, 작은, 내 삶의 가치를 생각하며
오늘은 반요에서 본따이까지 걸어서 25km룰 갔다.
오늘도 변함없이 걷다 보니, 문득 라오스 사람들의 문화생활 상을 살펴보니, 우선 생각은 아직 19세기에 머물러 고전적이지만, 생활 방식은 이미 20세기를 받아들여, 차츰 기계화와 과학화가 되고 있으며, 생활 도구는 시대를 훌쩍 뛰어 넘어,
이미 21세기의 현대화에 와 있다고 할 수 있다. 예를 들어 산골마을의 아낙이 숯과 장작에 불을 지펴 요리를 하면서, 가족들과는 핸드폰으로 통화를 하고 있다는 것. 우리가 예전에 널리 사용하던 삐삐를 물어보면 그것이 뭐냐? 고,
반문할 정도로 삐삐를 모르고, 핸드폰을 사용하고 있음이고. 이들은 이미 TV는 처음부터 칼라TV 만 있는 줄 알고 있을 정도로, 흑백 TV를 모르고 칼라 TV를 보고 있으며, 그것도 위성 안테나를 이용, 전세계 각종 방송을 첩첩 산골 안방에서 시청하고 있다는 것이다.
그렇게 간편하고 단순함을 선호하면서 현대적이지만, 전통과 관습을 절대 고집하며 살고 있음인데, 중요한 것은 그들은 아주 검소하게 살고 있다는 것이다. 라오스는 남북으로 길게 늘어져 크고 작은 산들로 이어진 라오 안남산맥과
국토를 길게 흐르는 메콩강 등의 영향으로, 기계화의 가장 필수적 에너지요소인 전기자원이 풍부한 편으로, 오히려 전기를 인접 베트남과 태국 등지로 수출까지 하고 있기에, 라오스 산골 어느 마을에도, 진짜 사람 발길이 드문 첩첩 산중 몇 곳을 제외하고는
사람이 살고 있는데, 전기가 안 닿는 곳은 없을 정도로 기본 문화생활 요소를 갖추고 있다. 다만 문제는 산골마을 등지에선 전기를 사용함에 있어, 첫번째는 경제적 능력인데, 평소 현금을 회전시킬 정기적인 수입원이 없다는 것이다.
다시 말해 전기세를 낼 돈이 없음이기에, 가능하면 자제와 절약을 할 수밖에 없는데, 물론 현실적 경제적 여건에 따른 절약도 불가피 하겠지만, 실내등 한 두개 외에는 전기를 사용할 만한 도구가 없는 것도 중요한 이유 중 하나이다.
또한 새벽 문화를 생활 화하여 즐기고 있다는 것과, 가옥의 구조적 특성상 밤이 되면 대나무로 엮어 만든 외벽을 통해, 전등불을 밝히면 밖에서 집안이 훤하게 들여 다 보이기에, 초 저녁 집안에서 옷을 갈아 입는 것도 조심스러울 수밖에 없는,
개인 사생활에 대한 프라이버시를 지키기 위함 등이, 흥미로운 전기사용의 자제 이유들이다. 이밖에 집안의 살림살이를 살펴보더라도, 방안에는 몇 벌의 옷가지와 침구를 챙겨 넣을 수 있는, 장롱이나 옷장 아니면 서랍장 같은 도구가 전부인데,
그것도 사용 용도에 맞게, 직접 나무로 만든 궤짝 정도가 고작이며, 부엌 살림이라 하여도 냄비와 접시 몇 개가 전부, 꼭 필요한 다른 요리 도구와 숟가락 젓가락조차 전무한 실정들이다.
물론 식사 준비를 함에 있어, 도구의 부족으로 기다림과 번거로움이 불가피 하여도, 부족함에 대한 전혀 불평 없고, 서로가 서로에게 차분 하다는 것이다. 여기서 숟가락과 젓가락이 없으면, 어떻게 식사를 하는지 궁금 할 수밖에 없을 텐데,
그 해답은 아주 간단하다. 왼손은 주로 화장실에서 사용하기에, 오른손의 손가락을 이용, 직접 식사를 한다는 것, 이는 산골이나 도심이나 라오스 어디에서 든 볼 수 있는 현실인데, 도심의 식당 등 어느 집의 식탁 앞에 든, 언제나 손 씻을 불이 준비되어 있음이,
이를 확인해 주고 있는 것이다. 또한 일과가 끝나면 매일 목욕을 즐기는 생활 습관까지, 그들이 결코 빈곤하다 하여, 지 저분 하다고 할 수 없는 정신적인 풍요 속에, 최소한의 방법과 도구로, 스스로에게 충실히 삶을 영위하고 만족하고 있음 들이다.
어쩌면 우리 보다 더 위생적이고 합리적이며 검소하다 할 수 있는, 그 들만의 현실적 생활상임에 틀림없다. 그것은 한 번쯤 물질 만능주의의 나태 속에 빠져, 스스로 게으름을 자초하고 있는, 우리 들로선 생각해 볼 필요가 있는 것들이 아닌가 싶었다.
무언가 더 편해 질려는 욕구충족을 위해, 한계가 무너진 재화의 경쟁적 소유만을 위해 자유를 포기한 채, 신성한 정신까지 팔 수밖에 없다는 것이 문제인데, 육체는 안락 해 질지 모르지만, 정신은 짓밟혀 늘 피곤함에 시달릴 수밖에 없다는 것.
하지만 그것 마저도, 인간의 건강한 육체는, 언제나 어느 정도 필수 운동량을 요구하고 있는데, 사실 그 운동량은 어차피 움직여야만 하기에, 욕심이 없는 당연한 본능적 노동력 만 있다면, 충분하다는 것으로,
인간의 육체적 충전을 위한 시간과 공간의 활용에서, 어차피 움직일 수밖에 없는 적당한 노동으로도, 충분 할 수 있음이란 것이다. 하지만 그것 마저도 회피하려고 하는 이유는, 오직 외적인 안락에 따른 게으름의 실체로,
하나뿐인 소중한 정신건강을 헤치고 있는 요인이다. “건강한 육체에서 건강한 정신이 발산된다”고 했다. 모름지기 돈을 들여서 살을 빼고, 돈을 주고 유산소운동을 하고 돈이면 다 해결된다는, 그릇된 생각 속에, 최소한의 본능적인 운동마저 회피,
결국 저항과 면역 약화로 인해, 스스로 불치의 병을 만들고 있다는 것이다, 반면 라오스의 삶들을 직접 살펴보면, 그들은 일상생활을 운용함에 있어, 결코 돈에 노예가 되거나 돈과는 자신의 그 어떤 것도 바꾸려 하지 않고,
주어진 시간, 스스로 최선을 다하여 책임과 의무를 다 하는데, 모자람도 넘침도, 게으름도 부지런함도 없이, 모든 것을 자신의 능력에 맞추어, 스스로 할 수 있는 한계 내에서만 충족하는, 인간적인 지혜로움을 발휘하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
농사를 짓는 사람들은, 많은 수확을 위해 자신을 혹사 시키지 않고, 그저 꼭 필요한 만큼에서 조금 넘을 정도로 씨를 뿌리고, 장사를 하는 사람들 또한 물건이 잘 팔린다고 욕심에 쫓기지 않고, 처음 팔려고 계획했던 대로만 물건을 들여와 장사를 한다.
그리고 남는 시간은, 자신과 가족 등을 위해 아낌없이 사랑을 나누며, 자유로운 시간들을 보낸다. 본명 돈 보다는 인간이 먼저라는 것을 실천하고 있는 것이다. “사람 낳고 돈 낳았지, 돈 낳고 사람 낳았냐?”는 아주 평범한 진리를 잊지 않게 하고 있음들이었다.
그렇다면 이러한 사실을 우리는 모르고 살고 있음인가? 의문이 아닐 수 없는데, 놀랍게도, 이 모든 것은 평소 우리가 너무도 잘 알고 있는 사실들이다. 다만 먹고 살기 바빠서, 아니면 돈이 있는데 뭐가 걱정이냐는 등의,
그릇되고 안일한 편견으로부터, 스스로 세뇌된 것들 일 뿐이다. 나부터가 스스로를 돌이켜 보고, 다시 한번 생각해 볼 필요가 있는 대목이 아닌가 싶다는 것으로, 우선 즐거운 마음으로 가까운 곳은 걸어서 가고. 시간을 일부러 내서라도 집안일도 거들어 보고,
일과가 끝나면 가벼운 산책을 하며 사색도 해보고, 휴일이면 텃밭을 가꾸고, 가끔은 가족들과 친구들을 위한 직접요리도 해보는 등등, 이 얼마나 소소한 나의 일상들인지, 작은 것부터 시작해 보는 것이 필요함 들이란 것이다.
그렇게 작은 일상부터 내 것으로 만들 때, 비로소 작지만 아름답고 작지만 행복할 수 있는, 진정 내가 세상을 살고 있음을 느낄 수 있고, 스스로에게 자유로울 수 있다는 것이다. 그렇다? 이제라도 잘못 알고 있는 만족과 성공에 대한,
우리시대의 물질만능주의와 금전만능주의에서, 어서 빨리 탈피해야 된다는 것이 아닌가 싶었다. 예로부터 재산을 지키기 위해선, 백만 장자는 백만가지 걱정을 가지고 살아야 하고, 천만장자는 천만가지 걱정을 가지고 살아야 한다고 했다.
그러나 흔히들 걱정이 아무리 많아도 좋으니, 제발 돈이나 많이 갖고 살았으면 좋겠다고 들 한다. 물론 나도 예외는 아니었다. 이제 여행을 하면서 저들을 보니 “산입에 거미줄 안친다”고, 움직이며 노력하면 최소한 밥은 먹고 살수 있는 세상,
그렇다면 분명. 그 이상은 나태와 사치로 이어지면서 폼생폼사, 스스로를 학대하게 된다는 것을 부인할 수 없음이다. 결국 살면 얼마나 산다고, 영혼까지 팔아가면서 살아야만 하는가? 후회가 아니 될 수 없다는 것.
자유로운 영혼들의 세상, 나와 내 가족들, 더 나아가 나를 사랑하는 모든 사람들을 위하여, 함께하며 나눔을 실천할 수 있는 작은 의무와 책임을 명심, 아주 작은 그까짓 것부터, 분명 내가 할 수 있는 일들이라면,
더 늦기 전에, 실속이 없는 돈과 명예 그리고 권력 등의 허세로부터, 최소한의 해방을 위하여, 자기로부터의 혁명에 도전해야 한다는 것이, 현실적임을 가르쳐 주고 있음이 아닌가? 싶다는 생각이 절실했다.
