On the 75th day of my solo trip to Laos, morning in Pongsali, the northernmost tip of Laos!
Today, I traveled 15 km by motorcycle and 20 km on foot from Pongsali to Yapong.
Finally, it started from the southernmost tip of Laos, reached the northernmost point, and ended the end of the eastern part of Laos. Of course, there is still a long way to go for the remaining western termination, but my feelings were new. Yesterday morning, after a quick meal,
I climbed up to the fortress-like observation deck on the highest mountain slope in the city, and I saw the alpine city of Pongsali, which seemed to be resting with a fairytale-like clouds and wind. I realized that I was really on top of a mountain stacked on top of each other.
As I slowly descended and looked around the city, I could see that the buildings were Chinese, perhaps because everyone around me was close to the border with China, or perhaps because I was on the outskirts of Yunnan Province in China.
In fact, I could see many Chinese people doing business all over the city, especially the fact that the Chinese currency, the yuan, could be used directly in restaurants and shops without exchanging currency, so much so that it was impossible to tell whether this was Laos or China.
I looked at other nearby tourist spots, but I couldn’t find anything special except for the old green tea fields. After stopping by a restaurant for a while and having a quick lunch, the sun was still in the middle of the day, but I went to a nearby guesthouse to do some laundry.
I decided to go to bed early to comfort the night that had been very shaky and to reconcile with the long journey from tomorrow. And today, he returned to his original self and was trying to escape the city center on the morning breeze of Pongsali.

They are even concerned that they are now in a situation where they need to increase family planning again. Anyway, family planning was not so unfamiliar to us, but in Laos, which has a large land area, and a low population density compared to Korea, I think it’s okay.
From the standpoint of Laos, where the overall national income is low, it seems undeniable that the minimum restraint is a natural reality considering the economic ability of the people. Above all, under the pretext of minimal social community consciousness reform, they have an instinctive shyness that has not yet been tainted.

For now, I decided to be more faithful to my gait and did my duty diligently. Although Pongsali is the capital of the province of Ponsali, it can be said to be a small city with a population of about 20,000, so it was only an hour’s walk from the city center to get out of the city.
After all, I almost left the city, and the police post that I was worried about came into view. According to the information I received on the bus yesterday, it was clear that there would be a sanction for ‘not being able to walk’ like the old Sieng Quang.
Not long ago, “Operation 007 in Ponsabhan” was still vivid, so while I was hesitating for a while, I stopped a motorcycle running towards me, asked me to take a ride to the store after passing the guard post for a while, and took out a little more than 1 US dollar in Lao money, and it was OK.

This is because foreigners often use rips. Also, if you must take the night bus, you should be aware that long-distance transit buses will pass through all but four places, including Adafu, Samrua, Bogeo and Pongsali. After checking their departure and destination,
If you don’t rely on the bus timetable, don’t get involved in the terminal lights turning off and the windows are closed, and wait for the transit bus with will, you can take the transit bus that comes into the terminal from the afternoon to late at night or early in the morning to drop off passengers.

Of course, I don’t use any means of transportation such as buses until Udomsai, so I just need to turn off my nerves and just walk faithfully like clouds blowing in the wind, and all I must do is walk hard and get drunk on the surrounding mountains, so I’m organizing my day here.
나홀로 라오스여행 75째날, 라오스 최북단 퐁살리의 아침!
오늘은 퐁살리에서 야퐁까지 오토바이로 15km, 걸어서 20km를 갔다.
드디어 라오스 최남단에서 출발하여 최북단까지, 끝에서 끝까지 라오스 동쪽의 종단을 마쳤다. 물론 아직 남은 서쪽 종단의 갈 길이 멀기만 하지만, 감회는 새롭기만 했다. 어제 아침, 간단히 식사를 마치고는,
시내에서 가장 높은 산 비탈 위의 요새 와도 같은 전망대에 올라갔다, 동화 속 같은 아기자기 한 구름과 바람도 쉬어 가는 듯한, 고산도시 퐁살리 시내가 한눈에 들어왔다. 정말 겹겹이 쌓인 산 위에 있음을 실감했다.
천천히 내려오면서 시내 곳곳을 두루 돌아보고는, 주변이 모두 중국과의 국경을 근접하고 있어서 그런지, 어쩌면 중국의 운남성 외곽에 와있는 착각이 들 정도로, 건물 등이 중국화 되어 있음을 알 수 있었다.
실제 시내 곳곳에선 장사를 하는 등의 중국사람들도 많이 볼 수 있었는데, 특히 중국 화폐인 위엔을 환전 없이 식당과 상점 등 어느곳에서 든 직접 통용할 수 있음이, 여기가 라오스인지 중국인지 구별이 안될 정도였다.
그 밖에 근처의 관광지 등을 알아봤지만, 오래된 녹차 밭을 제외한고는 특별한 곳은 찾을 수 없었다. 잠시 식당에 들러 간단히 점심식사를 마치고, 아직 해는 중천이지만, 근처의 게스트하우스를 찾아 밀린 빨래도 하면서,
무척이나 흔들렸던 간밤을 위로하고, 다시 내일부터의 긴 여정을 다독거리기 위해, 일찌감치 잠을 청하기로 했다. 그리고 오늘, 본래의 모습으로 돌아와 퐁살리의 새벽 바람을 타고 도심 탈출을 시도하고 있었다.
그렇게 짙게 깔린 안개구름사이를 걸으면서, 엊그제 타고 왔던 버스의 터미널을 지나다 보니, 버스 안에서의 콘돔에 대한 생각이 다시 떠올랐다. 종교적 특성상 낙태를 금기 시 하고, 또한 낙태를 할 만한 의료시설과 경제적 능력이 부족한 관계로,
일단 임신이 되면 무조건 낳을 수밖에 없는 라오스 실정상, 낳고 나면 저 혼자 알아서 잘 커주면 다행인데, 그것이 말처럼 되질 않고, 식량과 의약품 그리고 시설 등의 부족으로 많은 사회문제를 초래하고 있어, 유아 사망률이 높은 라오스 정부의 입장으로선,
어떻게 든 해결해야 될 문제란 것에는, 기정 사실임이 틀림 없는 것 같았데, 얼마 전, 한국에서도 “아들, 딸 구별 말고 둘만 낳아 잘 기르자“고 하며, 예비군 교육장에서 불임수술을 무료로 시술해주고 훈련을 면제해주는 등,
콘돔선전을 하면서 자녀계획 줄이기 캠페인을 벌이던 일이 엊그제 같았는데, 그렇게 몇 해 지나지 않아, 벌써 인구 증가율이 너무 감소돼, 이젠 오히려 젊은 층의 부족 등으로 이어지면서, 사회문제가 심각해지고 있어,
이젠 다시 가족계획을 늘려야 할 형편이라고 우려까지 하고 있다. 어쨌든 가족계획 그것은 그렇게 우리에게 도 생소한 일은 아니었는데, 우리나라에 비해 국토의 면적이 넓고 인구밀도가 낮은 라오스의 실정으론, 당연 괜찮지 않냐는 생각이 들기는 하지만,
전체 국민 소득이 낮은 라오스의 입장에선, 국민들의 경제적 능력을 감안한다면 최소한의 자제는 당연한 현실임을 부인할 수도 없는 것 같았다. 무엇보다 최소한의 사회적 공동체적 의식개혁 이란 미명 아래, 그들에 아직 때묻지 않은 본능적 수줍음을,
인간적인 청순함을 지킬 수 있음에서 벗어난, 본능적 유희 만을 위한 잘못된 편견으로 받아들이지 않기 만을 바라며, 홀로 엷은 미소를 지으며 결론을 지었다. 그리곤 펼쳐지고 있는 퐁살리의 아름다운 산야로 시선을 돌리고,
일단은 걸음걸이에 더 충실하기로 하고는 열심히 뚜벅이에 본분을 다하기로 했다. 퐁살리는 퐁살리주의 주도라고는 하지만 인구 2만정도의 작은 도시라고 할 수 있기에, 도심에서 1시간 정도만 걸어가면 도시 밖으로 나갈 수 있음이었다.
역시 그렇게 시내를 거의 빠져나왔는지, 저 만치 우려했던 경찰 초소가 시야에 들어왔다. 어제 버스 안에서 입수한 정보에 의하면, 분명 저 곳에서도 예전의 시엥꽝 등과 같이 ‘걸어서 가지 못한다’고 제제를 할 것이라고 했다.
얼마전 ‘폰사반의 007작전‘이 아직 생생하기만 하기에, 잠시 머뭇거리며 궁리를 하던 중, 저만치 달려오는 오토바이 한 대를 세워, 잠시 초소만 지나 가게 태워 달라 하면서, 미화1달러 조금 넘는 라오스 돈을 꺼내 주었더니 OK였다.
그렇게 간단히 경찰 초소를 빠져나와 15km 정도를 오토바이 뒤에 타고 와서는, 다시 걷기시작 했다. 앞에서의 콘돔선전이 길어지는 바람에 빼먹을 뻔했는데 도보 여행이 아닌, 일반적인 버스 여행을 할 경우,
참고해야 할, 라오스에서의 시외버스 타기에 대해 설명을 해야 할 것 같은데, 대부분의 라오스 도시에는 장거리 버스터미널과 버스정류장이 설치되어 있어, 여행자라면 매일 장거리 버스가 출발하고 도착하고 있는데, 목적지 몇 곳을 제외하고는
거의 아침 7시를 전, 후 해서 오전 중에 한두 차례로 나뉘어 모두 떠나 버리고 오후와 저녁에는 경유 버스 만이 있음을 명심해야 한다. 종점인 퐁살리와 같은 경우는, 당연 경유버스가 없음을 감안, 특히 오전 중 모두 떠나 버리는데,
아침 일찍 서두르지 않으면, 실수하기 십상이란 것이었다. 그리고 주간의 버스 승차권은 지정된 창구에서 버스에 승차 전, 미리 구입하는 것을 잊지 말아야 한다. 버스 안에서도 구입할 수 있지만, 이미 버스를 탔음에,
외국인의 경우 거의 바가지를 쓰는 경우가 많기 때문이다. 또한 부득불 야간 버스를 타야 할 경우에는, 아땃푸와 삼루아 그리고 보게오와 퐁살리 등 4곳을 제외한 모든 곳에서는 장거리 경유 버스가 지나 감을 숙지하고. 이들의 출발과 종착지를 체크한 후,
버스 시간표에 의지하지 말고, 터미널의 불이 꺼지고 창구가 문을 닫는 것 등에도 관여치 말고, 의지를 가지고 경유 버스를 기다리면, 오후부터 밤 늦게 또는 새벽 녘에 승객을 하차키 위해 터미널로 들어오는 경유 버스를 탈 수 있다.
다만 중북부의 푸쿤에서는, 동북부의 삼루아 쪽으로 가는 버스와, 서북부의 루앙프라방 등으로 가는 버스가, 두 곳 등으로 갈라지는 것을 참고하여, 목적지가 바뀌지 않게 잘 물어보고 타야 한다는 것이다.
그리고 장거리 경유 버스라 할지라도, 야간에는 지정된 터미널과 정류장이 아닌 곳에선 정차하지 않기에 거의 타기 어렵다는 것인데, 아무리 일부러 세우려 해도 운전기사 맘, 세워주지 않으면, 포기하는 것이 바람직할 것이다.
그렇지만 유관으로 행색을 구별할 수 있는 주간의 경우에는, 다행히 버스가 지나간다는 사실만 확실하면, 터미널과 정류장이 아닌 어떤 곳, 버스가 지나가는 전국 도로상의 어디에서나, 손을 들어 버스를 세워 탈 수 있음이다.
다만 대체적으로 버스운전기사 등의 느낌과 유관으로 괜찮아 보인다는 식별로, 범죄 등의 가능성이 없다고 판단될 때, 서로의 편의를 도모함이 우선하고 있기에, 외모와 휴대품 등이 승객으로서 오해의 소지가 없어야 한다는 것이다.
물론 나는 우돔사이까진 버스 등 이동수단을 이용할 일이 전혀 없으니, 그런 신경 끄고, 그저 부는 바람에 뜬구름이 가듯, 걷는데 충실하면 될 터, 그저 열심히 주변 산세에 취해 걷기 만 하면 될 일이기에, 오늘은 여기까지, 또 하루를 정리하고 있었다.
