Like a flowing river

On the 74th day of my solo trip to Laos, the northernmost part of Laos, the road to Phongsali, far away

Today, I took a bus from Udom to Pongsali, 350 km.

When I arrived at the village of Rock 32 yesterday evening, I realized that the atmosphere of the village was more like a city than a village, and I could finally see that the udomsai was getting closer.

It was already arriving in the middle of Udomsai Province, the capital of Udomsai. Yesterday, I took a little longer walk as an excuse to take a day off and spread out the map I was carrying with me, and now I turned my nose back here and saw China on the left and Vietnam on the right.

I was thinking about going to Pongsali, the last city in the northernmost part of Laos, but although Pongsali is adjacent to Udomsai Province, the northernmost border of Laos and the surrounding mountains make it a one-way road.

If you are a foreign tourist like me, you will eventually have no choice but to go back to Udom after looking around Pongsali. Of course, there are a few border immigration offices here and there, and you can go in and out of China or Vietnam.

All of them are only allowed to use and pass through neighboring Laos, China, and Vietnamese, and other foreigners are prohibited from passing through Pongsali, and they cannot leave or enter, so if foreign tourists want to go to China or Vietnam,

If he wanted to continue traveling to Laos, he would have to return to Udom and use the designated immigration office, which was open to foreigners. Then, in the case of me who must come back anyway,

It was a bit difficult to walk back and forth, so I thought it would be a good idea to take a bus to get to Pongsali and walk out only on the way out. At the end of the question, even though I was tired in the end,

If you take the bus anyway, you don’t have to delay between udom and reduce the cost of accommodation for a day. I decided to take a long-distance local bus at night. The bus that got on the bus was intoxicated by Lao Lao,

It swayed non-stop all night, blowing misty dust, running and running. When I woke up from my sighing sleep, I opened my eyes for a moment and saw that the sound of the bus engine in the dark was still far away, and only the loud engine noise of the bus in the dark was circling in my ears.

After a while, on the dreamy night of the past, the morning sun was dazzling on the dirt covered by the dirt on the dirt road, melting the darkness around me. However, when I looked at my little girl, it was not a sight to behold.

Why? I looked around twice and found that everyone seemed to have fought any kind of war all night. I could only see the glossy eyes, and everything I was wearing, as well as my belongings, seemed to have been painted in the same color as ochre.

The problem was that I had been eating this dust all night, and now I thought that I would have to wear a mask to breathe easily, so I had no choice but to take out a towel and cover my mouth right now. Everyone dozed off like that, but they couldn’t sleep properly, so their tired expressions were strong.

When I looked at my watch, it said that it would take 12 hours to get to Pongsali, so I thought I would have to drive another two hours to reach Pongsali, which was far away. It was truly a shame to see it alone. However, it seemed that the bus that was running noisily went off the dirt road,

As the shaking decreased, the bus stopped for a while. Suddenly, a group of neatly dressed people got on the bus, each carrying a handbag, and one of them immediately broke the morning silence and started talking.

Then, for a while, he took something out of his bag, held it in his hand, and asked those close to him if they knew what it was, just like a businessman. In the past, it was common to see when riding intercity buses in Korea, and now it is an old memory that has disappeared.

It was a new feeling to be able to see it again in Laos. He opened his tired eyes slightly, pricked up his ears, and carefully examined what he was trying to sell. However, I couldn’t see it well as I was sitting in the back seat of the bus.

It was not even hard to hear due to engine noise. Just before my curiosity exploded, a person who seemed to be in the group was handing out something from the front seat, but since it was free, he was telling me not to feel like a burden and to use it well.

Every passenger who came in was bursting into laughter, especially the female passengers, who were blushing but quietly accepting and quickly taking care of them, so I couldn’t help but wonder what it was.

Finally, it was my turn, but for some reason the foreigner said they wouldn’t give it to me and just passed by. I had no choice but to ask the person sitting next to me to show it for a while, and I said, “Oh! Well, it was a condom.

I really couldn’t help but laugh. Eventually, the person standing in front of me spoke loudly, saying that the Lao government was conducting a family planning campaign and was talking about the need to use condoms.

I told a lady who seemed to be in her late 30s, “I’m married. How many children have you had?” In a very low voice, “6” to another lady in her 40s, “I got married. How many children do you have in total?” “Eight people”

And when I asked the same question to another lady, this time she replied, “Five people.” Then, “How much effort have you worked so hard to give birth to children?” “How is it? Do you have any plans to have one or two more children?” Everyone was in a state of panic at this point.

He continued, “To give birth to one, you have to keep it in your belly for 10 months, but if you gave birth to 8 children, it would take about 7 years to be full for 80 months, and if you have 6 children, it will take about 5 years in 60 months.

Most families in Laos now have an average of 5~6 children, so Lao women must have had a hard time giving birth to children for 5 years. However, although they had it because they liked each other, the problem was that they did not have the financial ability to give birth, and the death rate was high.

In particular, the number of single mothers is increasing these days, so the problem is serious,” and continued, “After a day’s work, that’s the only thing I can do, but it’s not something that can be chased and stopped one by one.

If they really stopped it, it would be obvious how bad the government would become, so all I could do was ask them to be careful and restrained.”

I had no choice but to wrap my head.” “But fortunately, we found this condom and distributed it for a while now, and we have been able to reduce the birth rate by a whopping 50% in the past two years. It has reduced the suffering of Lao women by 50%.

However, there are still too many people who don’t know this good guy, so we are going to visit and promote it in every village for the mothers in the mountains, so we hope for your patronage and cooperation.

And everyone! The Korean government is only proud of how loyal these condoms are to the country. Therefore, those who have been using condoms well in the meantime, and those who do not know this condom yet, should now make condom use a daily routine.

I hope you will take the lead in reducing further household poverty and the problem of poetry meetings.” At the end of the speech, which was not short with such a bumper greeting, the condom propaganda ended with a loud applause that seemed to have been waiting for absolute agreement.

Before I knew it, the bus had arrived at the Pongsali terminal, and I was still tired, but thanks to the smile of the condom, I was able to soothe my fatigue a little with a gentle smile on my lips. Eventually, the door of the bus opened, and the passengers began to pick up their luggage one by one and get off the bus.

I also had no choice but to open my collar because the fresh morning in Pongsali, which is typical of the city center in the high mountains, was so refreshing, but as I greeted the blue sky that turned blue, I took my first step full of curiosity and opened my day in Pongsari.
