The world is a much more interesting place than books.
- Benjamin Disraeli -
A kingdom located in Europe and North America. The capital is Copenhagen (København). Copenhagen is a happy country known for its bike-friendly cities, beautiful canals, and a variety of museums.
Culturally, it is usually grouped together with Norway and Sweden in the Scandinavian Peninsula and includes Finland, which is currently the smallest of these four countries, but in the past, Denmark also ruled these four countries as the suzerainty of the Kalmar League.
The national flag also uses a biased cross common to the Nordic countries, and it is said that the origin of this biased cross flag was Denmark, and the Nordic countries that were once ruled by Denmark were influenced by Denmark to use similar flags.
It consists of the Jutland Peninsula and large and small islands that extend to the north of Germany, and although Jutland is the mainland and the island looks like an annex island, the capital is the largest island, Sjælland, which is an island country on the peninsula.
In addition, the population is slightly larger on the island than on the island, and although Jutland itself is officially a peninsula, it is crossed by the Kiel Canal at the bottom, so there is no part of the European continent that is completely attached to land.
Although it is a narrow waterway, it is not difficult to get around by car, thanks to the construction of a bridge between land and sea, which connects the island to Jutland and Sweden on the Scandinavian Peninsula.
It is considered a representative developed and high-income country, and it is a country that competes for the top spot in the world in terms of political transparency, and on Wikipedia, ‘Denmark’ includes the Danish mainland, and ‘Danish Realm’ includes the Danish mainland and Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Geographically, it is far from the “mainland” region of Denmark, so it is sometimes separated from each other, but the connection with the mainland is only to support the mainland in sports competitions, and it is limited to football, and the Faroe Islands participate in the FIFA World Cup alone, so even this is excluded.
In English, the Danish mainland is usually referred to as Denmark ‘proper’. The Kingdom of Denmark (Danish Realm) is the 12th largest country in the world, larger than Saudi Arabia, with 98% of the kingdom’s area occupied by Greenland, and more than 98% of the population is occupied by mainland Denmark.
Overall, the ground is low. The highest peak, Mollehøj Hill, is only about 170 meters high, there are many islands, the coastline is very long at about 7,000 km, and the end of the world is also in Denmark, an area where you can see the strange phenomenon of the sea splitting.
In addition, it consists of several islands such as Amager Island and Erö Island, and to the east of Copenhagen is adjacent to Malmö in Sweden with the Øresund Strait in between.
The climate is milder than in other Nordic countries, with the average temperature in Copenhagen in January being 1.4°C. However, the winter is humid and the diurnal temperature is small, so the perceived temperature is cold. And even though it is an oceanic climate, there are fewer reusable water resources than expected
Due to the poor water quality and high tax rates unique to Europe, water supply rates are the most expensive among OECD member countries for household use. It is windy all year round, especially in winter, with a high climate change, with an average annual rainfall of 664 mm and about 160 rainfall days per year.
Denmark, like other countries in Western Europe, has not seen much growth in population, but it has been growing quite steadily, and although there was a period of stagnation from 1980 to 1990, the overall population has increased little by little, and the number of immigrants has increased significantly in the 21st century.
Although the income distribution is very equal, the top 20% account for 99% of the total wealth based on asset holdings, making it one of the countries with the largest wealth-rich gap in the world, and one of the largest household debts in the world.
Denmark’s savings rate is among the lowest in the OECD, and according to the OECD TAX database, Denmark is the country with the highest tax revenue among OECD countries. The reason is that through Denmark’s welfare system, the higher the income, the more taxes you pay.
Another unique feature of Denmark is its flexicurity, which is a combination of labor flexibility and employment security. Flex security has high mobility between jobs and is economically stable even if you lose your job.
It represents the Danish labor model, where several institutions are in place to help people get back into work. Furthermore, Danish society can be defined as a work-life balance. Many Danes prioritize relaxing to spend time with family and friends over work.
Denmark has a relatively high standard of medical care with 48 general hospitals as of 2011, and is the country of Lego, a brick toy that children all over the world love. Thanks to Lego, Billon, which was a small town, has grown into a metropolitan city with an international airport.
In addition, dairy farming is also developed, and Danish ham, sausages, cheese, milk, and milk powder are famous all over the world, and there are the world’s No. 1 mega-shipping company Maerskline, a ship engine company, and MAN Energy Solution, a ship engine company, and Novo Nordisk, a pharmaceutical company that surpasses LVMH and ranks first in Europe.
Unlike other Nordic peoples, Danes are known for their relatively sociable, friendly, and optimistic national character called hygge, so the overall national atmosphere is relatively bright compared to other Nordic countries.
They are very considerate of travelers with infants, and when using public transportation such as airplanes, railways, and buses, they give priority to them, but airplanes take family members with infants before business class, including babies as well as children around 3~4 years old.
Elevators are everywhere, all buses are low-floor buses, and stroller and bicycle cars occupy almost half of the total on the railway, so you can easily get on and off with strollers, wheelchairs, and bicycles. That’s why the stroller is very big,
Items in the middle of a cart and a stroller that are attached to the front of the bicycle and carry children about the size of a kindergarten student are often seen, and kindergarten teachers carry four children each, or parents use them to take their children to school.
There are almost no gypsies, so there are few pickpockets, so it is one of the few European countries where you can go out at night. Still, if you are a foreigner, you should be careful, because other foreigners may pickpocket at Danish airports or subways.
As much as the level of citizenship and welfare is high, there is a high level of consideration for people with disabilities, but the discrimination and racism against non-white foreigners living in Denmark is so great that the word hygge is overshadowed. Also, as in other European countries, most Danes are English-speaking.
Denmark itself aims for a very monotonous life, so nightlife lovers will quickly get bored. For reference, the sentiment of society is explained by the 10 articles of ‘Janteloven’, in a word, ‘you are just ordinary, and you are not better than others.’
Like the Nordic countries, the index of individualism is low, and alcohol can be drunk from the age of 16. And in European countries, the Internet speed is quite fast, and it is the first country in Northern Europe (1969) to legalize pornography, and it is an open country with an open sex culture.
The concept of lifelong education was first proposed under the influence of N. F. S Grundby, and the concept of “folk high school” is the name of the school corresponding to the elementary and middle school courses in Denmark is “folkeskole”, and it is a ninth grade integrated primary and secondary school system like Sweden.
Higher education institutions are generally evenly distributed in various regions, such as the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark, Roskilde University, Aarhus University, etc., and the bachelor’s program is 3 years, and the master’s program is about 2~3 years, depending on the university.
As of 2016, 76.9% of people believe in the Lutheran Church (Danish Church), which is the state church, and about 80% of Christianity, including Catholics and other Protestant denominations, is one of the countries with the highest percentage of Protestants in the world.
The fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen is world-famous, and the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen is widely known as a tourist attraction, but the actual Little Mermaid statue is too shabby, so it is one of the sightseeing courses that people are disappointed with.
However, after Disney’s Little Mermaid became a huge success with the prelude to the Disney Renaissance, Denmark, which is the home of the Little Mermaid, has a very high status and is being treated as national literature.
Well-known works such as <Out of Africa> Supper of Babet, as well as the famous writer Isaac Dinesen (real name Karen Blixen), is also from Denmark, and his representative work <A Winter Tale> expresses his love for his motherland in traditional folk tales, and his depiction of Danish nature is especially beautiful.
Danish is the only official language, and it is also used in the Danish islands and the Faroe Islands, and it was once designated as an official language in Greenland.
English, German, and French are often used as foreign languages, and English is the largest speaker of the population, and unlike other Western European countries such as Germany, English is so good that it is possible to talk to store staff and taxi drivers in English.
The average height for men is 182 cm for men and 168 cm for women, and when flying on the Nordic airline SAS (Scandinavian Air Service), the gap between the front and back of the seats is wide even in economy class, the disaster warning is unusual, and the price of food is very expensive in Greenland because it relies on imports for all food.
And the tax rate for cars in Denmark is a whopping 210%. With the money to buy a luxury foreign car in another country, you can’t buy such a good car in Denmark, and it is also a place where old cars are often seen because once a car is bought until it dies.
To be continued in the next part.
