On the 71st day of my solo trip to Laos, in search of happiness that does not exist in the world

Today, I walked 28 km from Naxiang to Pak Mong.

For several days, I have been walking immersed in the peace of the world. Everything is ordinary and beautiful in its own way. By chance, I met a monk about twenty years old who was walking on the same path. We didn’t ask each other how far we were going, we just greeted each other,

They just walked silently as if maintaining a certain interval. After a long time, I broke the silence and approached first. “I’m a Korean and my name is ‘Quns’, what is your name?” And “Where are you going now?” I asked.

I was happy to speak Lao, but when asked a straightforward question, I simply said ‘Fu~U’ (meaning “mountain” in Korean)” and “I’m going home to see my parents for a while,” with a characteristic kind smile.

Then I said, “I think you’re still young, but when and why did you do it? Have you become a monk?” However, instead of answering, he said, “Why are you now? What kind of trip are you traveling?”

It seemed like a cliché question, so I had no choice but to answer it with a smile, but why did I say something obvious, “People who live in other places want to know what they are thinking and living in in what environment, so they usually travel slowly on foot.” I asked, a little blunt.

However, Pooh didn’t care about my grievances, nodded his head, and said very calmly, “I followed you for a long time, and I felt it from the way you walked, and you passed by for a while like any traveler.

I thought there was something different about you compared to the travelers I usually know, but surprisingly, you are a traveler who is struggling to find your thoughts, and I think my idea is right.” I also felt that Pooh was not an ordinary friend,

Even if you are not a monk, you know that Laos teaches human principles and social cooperation from an early age, focusing on character education from all elementary and secondary education, so Puu received such character education from school to temple.

If you have lived in the Buddhist temple, which is the spiritual mother of the Lao people, for 20 years, it is natural that you will be very different from your children. With only my shallow knowledge and experience, I felt ashamed that I looked at him ridiculously.

At such an unexpected answer, I blushed and couldn’t help but think a little, although I was young, I must have been a monk. Only then did I approach him closely, this time politely and more or less,

“So, what do you think makes me different from other travelers?” I asked. “Normally, ordinary travelers. It seems that you value the visual feeling of good and bad, pay attention to history and beauty, and travel to gain new experiences.

Rather than such people, you are more interested in people’s thoughts, and you must be traveling alone, borrowing your own feet and traveling only on foot to compare people in different environments with your own thoughts.

I could see that there was something quite different from other travelers.” Then he added, “In fact, all human beings have the same physical structure, and the way they lead their lives is also the same.

After all, the environment is bound to be the same in any place if everyone lives, but in the name of a new experience, it seemed like a luxury to travel selfishly, even at the expense of precious time and money.

If I find another idea that you are talking about today, I think I will be fine at least once.” And then again to me, “Why? Looking for other ideas? I said, “In other people’s ways of life,

Maybe there is value and ultimate happiness in the time I lost!” Next, I quickly changed the topic and said, “When and why are you? Did you become a monk? I haven’t answered yet,” he asked, as if he were trying to make a non-important statement.

Maybe it was a defense of my shallow pride to hide the fact that I was talking, and when I said it, I even felt a little embarrassed. But he smiled softly and said, “I became a monk when I was 5 years old, and now you have chosen this trip.

I was also chosen by my parents as a way to live.” Again, I said, “So, have you ever regretted it since you became a monk?” Without hesitation, he said, “Every day, I step barefoot on the morning dew and go out to the altar.

The life of being a Buddha as a child, such as not being able to eat food after the sun goes down, was not as easy as I thought, so I tried to run away many times, but as I gradually endured it, I realized that it was also my life, so I never regret it now.” He said honestly.

Again, I asked, “So, are you happy now?” He replied without hesitation, “Of course I’m not happy,” and “I’m not unhappy either.” Then, on the contrary, he immediately gave me advice and advice,

“Where do you think the happiness, you want to find is? As far as I know, no matter how hard I try to find it, I don’t think it’s in this world right now.” However, he said, “Of course, I don’t know if I can find happiness in the world or not.

But I just want to feel the world while searching like this.” And I just want to find myself inside me before happiness.” He also said, “It is because you have to find yourself to know what happiness is in your heart, what happiness I think,

First of all, they are taking their own time to visit me,” he tried his best to make excuses that didn’t seem like an excuse and explained his position as if he were pretending to be a third-rate pilgrim. However, he insisted, “I agree that I am looking for myself.

The problem is that you are already living your life on the premise that you are not happy, and you may never be happy or find happiness.” And “Even now, rather than discussing happiness and unhappiness,

First of all, you need to find a small satisfaction that allows you to be faithful to the life you have been given, and if you can find it, this trip can probably be a new milestone in your life.” After all, he was fighting back with words that were one step higher than me.

Finally, as if I had been hit on the head with a hammer, I forced myself to hide the darkness in front of my eyes, and took out a word from my secret treasure, “What are you trying to find now on the path of a monk?” I asked.

Without hesitation, he said, “Well, I don’t know. If you’re just looking for nothing, I don’t know if you can understand, but surely, I’m in the world, why in the world? I’m trying to find out if I have anything.”

I asked again, “So what are you doing to find nothing?” He said, “I have to throw away everything I have first, so I learn to throw it away one by one, and I want to throw away all the last remaining of my heart.

I’m looking for how to get rid of that feeling.” I couldn’t say anything more. As if he had understood my intentions, he didn’t say anything more.

Silence flowed again, and we were immersed in unknown thoughts, just walking ahead and behind us. After thinking about it for a while, I looked back to try something again.

However, just before he suddenly disappeared into the distance, he waved at me as if he was just waiting for me to turn around. He turned away from me without saying a word, but he was also angry.

Since the paths were different, we had no choice but to break up anyway, and since there was no promise from the beginning anyway, it was only natural for each of us to go back alone and continue each other’s paths. A passage in the answer to the question that had such a deep meaning with him,

I had no choice but to end it with a brief relationship, so I waved goodbye and took a heavy step. But the words that even abandon my heart are ringing in my ears,

How do you really let go of your heart, and how do you live without a heart? It was just a joke. And yes, this is my limit! However, in the place where he was sent, a word that the great monk Sungcheol, who had already entered the temple a long time ago, said during his lifetime.

“A mountain is a mountain, water is water” came in and sat down, looking down at me, and I couldn’t help but be surprised. And aren’t I really on a bizarre journey? I was walking in thought.
