On the 70th day of my solo trip to Laos, Laos’ marriage culture is a place where you can share and share your affection.
Today, I walked 26 km from Huaipan to Naxiang.
I was walking hard today. As I walked, I couldn’t help but laugh unknowingly. I thought it was a bit of a joke, but I suddenly remembered the atmosphere of the house I felt yesterday when I stayed at a slightly unusual Lao family’s house.
I could only understand that it was a cultural difference, but among the cultures about marriage that I could see while traveling to many Asian countries, there are still places where polygamy and polygamy are openly continued, and people live with shared affection and love.
Wasn’t yesterday one of those unusual families? I thought. Most Lao Mountain villages form residential villages, and it is common for families to be large families within them. However, among them, there are houses where several houses are huddled together without a fence.
In the house where I stayed yesterday, a man in his 40s, a total of 17 people, including his 4 wives and children, were divided into several houses and lived together. During my travels to Laos, I occasionally saw up to two or three wives,
In fact, it was the first time I saw four wives at once, and it was a truly unique scene to see that the first wife to the fourth wife and the children were all living near each other, forming a family.
Of course, Laos stipulates one-wife by law, but the reality of mountain villages seems to be that polygamy is inevitable rather than the law, and it seems that there is no choice but to make an exception. That’s because I saw a lot of these houses while traveling.
What is even more interesting is that a man’s acquisition of a younger second wife or more is based on the decision and approval of the first wife, the most powerful of matriarchal society, rather than the man’s decision.
Above all, if the first wife does not agree to marry her husband and the second wife, divorce from the first wife is inevitable, and given the reality of the lack of men such as the geographical characteristics of Laos, Lao women are afraid that their men will be taken away by other women.
Considering that he was thinking of it as the greatest humiliation, he thought it was wise to share rather than take away. In addition, in mountain villages with a shortage of workers, even women are no exception in terms of participation and contribution to the labor force.
On the contrary, since it is a natural labor force, it can only be explained as the sharing of love, the virtue of love, and the mutual assistance of love, which can be obtained by sharing love. Perhaps that’s why most of the time they agree rather than divorce
It was giving rise to interesting speculation. However, in the event of a divorce for any reason, it does not matter who collected and managed the property, and all property must be divided equally between men and women in half at this point, even a spoon.
All rights, including children, were exercised by the man, and the man’s right was to marry the second wife again and hand over virtually all rights to the second wife. After that, the first wife, who divorced for any reason, had parental rights over her ex-husband’s children, etc.
They will not be able to participate in and pretend to be involved in all household chores. However, interestingly, most men give parental rights to their divorced ex-wives when they divorce and then take in their second wives without children.
It is said that more than 90% of the children of divorced families in Laos have their mother’s surname and live with their mother. Of course, the parental rights of the father, who have been given up like this, cannot be regained in any way.
In fact, unfortunately, there is no father who has ever come forward to find parental rights. Come to think of it, I wonder if the really incomprehensible part is the men in Laos? I wonder, “How can they give up their children so easily…”
In addition, if the first wife does not recognize the second wife, the first wife will give the second wife a certain amount of alimony and kick her out, and in that case, the wife of the inner wife shall receive it regardless of the amount.
The peculiarity is that you will not be able to make any more demands. However, what makes it even more unstillable is that the second wife, who was not recognized in this way, could no longer be by her husband’s side, but the problem was that the husband continued to look for the second wife and maintained an internal relationship.
From this point on, the drama-like drama between the first wife and the second wife, the unlaughable love war becomes fierce, but when the first wife catches the scene where her husband and second wife are together, the legal action against the second wife is second.
Unconditionally, the second wife had to be prepared for the harsh chidogon of the first wife. It has long been said that among the most interesting things to see in the world, the first is watching fires, and the second is watching fights, but if you can see these two things in one place at once, then if it is a love fight,
You can easily guess how much it is worth seeing. In any case, there is no doubt that it is a pity for the people involved, but it is undeniable that just imagining it will make you laugh. (Sorry if I was too harsh to say it’s someone else’s house fight!)
However, if the second wife of the inner wife has her husband’s children, firstly, there is a special obligation that the first wife must regularly give the second wife child support for the child, regardless of whether the first wife lives with her husband without divorce and does not live with her.
Even if I explain it, I can feel that something is very complicated, but according to their ethnic characteristics that hate complicated things very much, the first wife accepts the second wife and lives with her, so there is no need to add a supplementary explanation.
In fact, if you accept me as a second wife, I think it must be a very simple way to deal with it, but in Laos, due to war, etc., the current gender ratio between men and women is large number of women, so it is difficult for women to marry as old virgins when they are over 20 years old.
Regardless of the age of the man, if the woman is over 15 years old, regardless of the man’s marriage history, only the fact that he does not have a wife now is important, and in most cases, he gets married according to each other’s choices and decisions just because he must get married.
Of course, at this time, the man must have the financial power such as a minimum dowry, otherwise the man will not even think about marriage, and he will only be a lover for a while and will have no choice but to grow old as an old bachelor.
However, if a man’s poverty is fine, there are many cases where he is reduced to a son-in-law who moves into a woman’s house according to the woman’s choice. In addition, while Lao women aim for a strict matriarchal society, ironically, many women prefer sons.
Even though they like their sons so much, it is also very interesting that the inheritance of the parents’ inheritance is passed on to their daughters-in-law and daughters rather than to their sons. And among the Laotian people’s thoughts on marriage, there is another special point.
Lao people love to marry foreigners, but they are adamantly opposed to marrying both men and women and going to their spouse’s country to live. Probably more than 90% of them said they didn’t want to get married, and they couldn’t live in another country.
It is common for common-law multicultural couples who are currently living together in Laos to divorce without hesitation when the other person returns to their country, and to let the other person go, but it is almost rare for them to go together.
I don’t know what the reason is, but it is rooted in their traditional culture of valuing their parents and siblings rather than money and fame, and if I had to add, I could only imagine that leaving their base of life is fearful and scary.
Even if Korean marriage counseling centers that arrange international marriages try to match Lao women to Korean rural bachelors, most of them give up halfway through for this reason, and it is clearly different from neighboring Cambodia and Vietnam.
Therefore, there are only a few Laotian women who are married and living in Korea, and most of them have already been married in Laos for a long time and are known to be on the condition that they will go there for a while, so there are very few cases of marriage on the premise of marriage in Korea.
However, it is said that if a Korean woman or man marries a Laotian on the premise that he will live in Laos, he can choose many partners under any good conditions.
Another interesting fact related to settling in Laos is that among the foreign tourists I meet while traveling, most women rather than men want to settle down and live in Laos.
I don’t know much about the inner thoughts of women, whether they are rich or poor, but when it comes to the issue of love between men and women, I have no choice but to hurry on my way with a smile on my face when I conclude that it is only something that only the person concerned can know, something that I really don’t know, and that it is just the mystery of love.
