On the 63rd day of my solo trip to Laos, I took a step back to Ponsaban
※ From Long Tang to Nam Chap, walk about 12 kilometers,
We drove back to Ponsaban and returned about 50 kilometers.
After sleeping all night, the sun was already in the middle of the sky. I overslept. I set out on the road with my main island, but today I had to go to Namcha, which is 30 kilometers away, so I was worried about whether I would be able to go until the sun went down.
As a result, I can’t help but explain the dawn culture of Laos, which seems to be centered on agricultural culture and influenced by religion, compared to the daily life of diligent Lao people who open and close their day.
What was quite different from us was that Laotians wake up at 3 to 4 a.m. to start their workday, finish their work at 3 to 4 p.m., finish their meal briefly around 6 p.m., and go to bed at 8 p.m. or at least 9 p.m.
Considering that most shops and restaurants, including traditional markets in Laos, open around 4 a.m. and close at 4 p.m., we generally tend to enjoy evening culture, but Laotians can be seen as enjoying early morning culture.
I don’t know, but 90% of the total population believes in Buddhism, and I thought it was a lifestyle and cultural characteristic that should not be overlooked, but Lao Buddhism is a little different from Mahayana Buddhism in Korea and China, and the monks only eat alms in the morning.
Influenced by not eating any food except for drinkable water and drinks from the evening after sunset, it was possible to organize the day by following the daily routine of the monks at home as much as possible.
In particular, I think it is understandable that Lao people usually treat monks with the highest courtesy, and even the Lao government is actively cooperating with this Buddhist culture.
Women are made to be especially careful not to even rub their hands on the monks’ bodies, and in ordinary families, from the ‘Kao Judge’ in June, when the monks enter the retreat (prayer period), to the ‘Eopansa’ in October, when the retreat ends, they are asked to refrain from drinking and dancing at all large and small events.
All weddings, called “human reunion ceremonies,” were to be held from November to April of the following year after the prayer was over. Above all, due to the religious characteristics of Theravada Buddhism, the monks of the temple do not have a kitchen, and in the morning, they only eat through almsgiving.
I thought that I was influenced by not eating in the evening, so I decided to organize my day early. Also, considering that most Lao families had the experience of becoming monks in Dongjin early on, it was thought that it was a matter of sharing experiences.
Anyway, I was walking while thinking about the dawn culture of Laos’ religious characteristics, but even so, thanks to my oversleeping today, I had no choice but to walk diligently at a faster pace than usual.
Because I was in a hurry, I couldn’t even prepare for that, and if I couldn’t find a restaurant in the middle, I had no choice but to eat with chocolate and sausages, which were emergency combat rations in my backpack, so I had to go to Namcha as soon as possible to solve the people’s livelihood.
Oh really! Busy. I’m busy~ Still, I walked at a speed so hard that my underwear was soaked, and I was a little relieved that I was going more than I expected. I happened to see an empty bean curtain on the side of the road, so no matter how busy I was, I said, “Mt. Geumgang is also an after-dinner view.”
I decided to take a break for a while. However, I don’t know if the problem was due to yesterday’s fatigue, but I couldn’t stand the breeze coming down my eyelids and dozed off, but if I was drowsy for a while, I could have been fine.
I had forgotten to spend three hours on the bean curtain because I was playing fresh. In the end, even though the distance was not shorter than usual, I started late, and when I took a nap, I fell, and even if I was late, I had no choice but to come to my senses and pick up speed again.
Next to the ears of the little guys in the neighborhood, beyond the fence of a house built with only a few pieces of wood, the owner was gone, the dog was pretending to be the owner, and in front of the corner hole shop, there were people on the tiller, wondering where they were going.
However, appreciating lyrical poetry was temporary, and the midday sun, which had already followed well, disappeared somewhere, and before I knew it, I was surrounded by darkness, and in the end, the night march was inevitable, and it was too leisurely.
Oh no! A passing car reported to the nearby police post that a suspicious-looking person was walking on the mountain road behind me. At around 7 p.m., he was caught by the village patrol members who were dispatched and had no choice but to be questioned for various checkpoints and identification.
Just because I was walking on the street at night, I completely turned my body and backpack upside down, and after the inspection, I asked for my passport, and I had no choice but to give a copy of my passport and other identification documents that I had prepared in advance.
Then, he told me that he was a Korean traveler and missed the bus while dozing off in the bean barn, and that he was walking only to the nearest village at night, and while talking about the bad situation, he begged me to be lenient just once.
But he said he understood and thought he would send it to me soon, so he called somewhere, waited for a while, and after about 30 minutes, the police car of the main office appeared. Once the uniformed police officers got out of the car, there was no excuse at all, regardless of the reason.
They were even handcuffed and taken to the police station. At the police post, I went back the way I had come yesterday and today, walked about 50 kilometers, and was taken to the police station in downtown Ponsaban.
First of all, I admitted that I was just looking for a place to rest because I couldn’t pitch, and I didn’t have a big problem with it, and I thought they would let me go right away, but after a while after reporting what was going on, I suddenly changed to a look of nothingness again.
I moved them to a place like a full-scale investigation room, and while turning around from one person to another, I was teasing them by repeating strange questions that didn’t even look like strange questions, such as “Aren’t you a spy?”
Still, they had no choice but to endure with the common sense that “even if they are bitten by a tiger, they can live as long as they come to their senses” and “the thirsty dig a well.” However, the police officers were not formidable, and for any reason, this area was outside the city.
In particular, while emphasizing the fact that night marching on mountain roads is prohibited, the same words were repeated, and even though midnight was approaching after four hours, the disparate threads continued.
However, in a consistent answer, it seemed that the investigation had been completed to some extent, and it seemed that they were finishing it, and that they would send it to me when the passport was verified, but the problem was that they were asked to produce the original, not a copy. However, in the meantime, based on my travel experience,
As someone who knows very well that taking away my passport anywhere when traveling abroad and not getting it back can be a headache, I said that I didn’t have the original passport right now, and that I left it with a friend in Vientiane (the capital of Laos) for reasons such as visa renewal and so on.
If you need to check, you have no choice but to check with the Korean embassy yourself. For a while, the war of nerves continued silently with each other noticing each other, and it was past 12 o’clock at night, and they insisted that the copy was likely to be forged.
Now, I keep holding on to my original passport under the pretext of checking it, but after walking all day, my feet are swollen, my stomach is screaming because I can’t eat properly, and I am exhausted from the cold.
However, when I noticed that the expressions that kept repeating the same words were unlikely to be just let go, I blatantly seemed to be asking for money, but I wanted to give it to him as soon as possible and solve it.
In fact, I didn’t know what to do because I didn’t have any money to give because I was in a good situation. The tug-of-war of nerves continued, and somehow, “the thirsty digs a well,” and he had no choice but to open his mouth first and find a breakthrough.
