On the 59th day of my solo trip to Laos, I love you Muang Kham!
※Today, I walked 20 kilometers from Muang Kham to Nong Pheng.
Finally, I got out of the lucky drink of a few days and returned to Tubuk to walk, coincidentally, the Vimai of Lao Sung started two weeks ago, on Friday, and continued Saturday and Sunday, and at the end of the holiday, it coincided with the anniversary of the establishment of the Lao national government, and a long festive holiday continued.
Now, as I passed through the center of Muang Kham, my curiosity was focused on what kind of stranger I was, but the people in the neighborhood who were sitting in a row on the side of the road grabbed my hand as I tried to pass by.
I could only be moved by their overflowing humanity, and I thought I should take a moment to explain the unique place name of Muang Kham.
Muang is not a proper noun in the place name, but a word that refers to a city about the size of a town in Korea, and the name of this city means ‘Kham’ (gold), “city of gold.”
In a few short days, if I were to add my own heart, the preciousness of humanity sparkles even in the simplicity, and the friendly eyes of everyone I meet, the small but beautiful golden happiness that conveys the golden happiness, literally overflowing with golden humanity.
It was a good place that he would never forget, and he thought of Muang Kham. At the talak (market) of Muang Kham, which we are passing by, the waves of the splendid Lao Sung people are tirelessly swaying with loud music, as if to announce that the festival is still continuing.
It was a long way to go, but I couldn’ t resist it because I was so reluctant to hand over Lao Lao (a traditional Lao liquor) filled with the blessing of Hansako, so I could only sip it and drink it so happily.
I can’t express it, as if proving the saying that “happiness is not in order of grades,” but I thought it was probably ecstatic.
They believed that all people were messengers who brought good luck in the New Year, and they practiced that they could receive blessings only if they treated their guests well.
It was flying out of the world, and it took two hours to get to the guesthouse, which was about two kilometers away.
For several days now, a jar of liquor had fallen from the sky, and I had been sipping and humming around, but today I had been saying all day, “There is no business in front of alcohol,” and I couldn’t get out of the poison at all, and finally I lost my mind.
I couldn’t remember where I was or how I was sleeping here. When I woke up from the early evening drunkenness, all I could remember was that I had passed through the clouds, but anyway, yes, this must be the happiness of human life!
It must have been a pleasant day. Still, fortunately, judging from the fact that I was well absorbed in the guesthouse, I think it ended well without making any major mistakes, but it was just a dream, a chatter…
I usually drink 2~3 bottles of soju, but I still don’t tolerate small mistakes, so I concluded with the hope that I would have fallen asleep peacefully when I got drunk and found a place to lie down. But soon, gurg~ Why? Is it sending a strange signal from my belly?
I was laughing, but I had no choice but to go to a restaurant to have a meal.
Wait a minute, waiting for the food we ordered, and although it feels late, I think I should give a general explanation of what kind of country Laos is, which consists of 1 special city and 16 provinces, and each state is called a ‘gang’.
The gang is divided into ‘Muang’ (the same as the county seat city in Korea) and then ‘Ban’ (the same as the seat of Myeon in Korea), which is a socialist municipality that is set up as an administrative region. The total area of the country is about 1.1 times the Korean Peninsula combined.
Seventy percent of the country is mountainous and mountainous, and it is in a tropical climate zone in the middle of the Indochina Peninsula where there is no sea, and it has a roughly divided rainy season of 6 months and a dry season of 6 months.
Especially during the dry season, you can’t really see even a raindrop, so you are considered lucky to see rain during this period, and during the rainy season, it rains mainly at night, and during the daytime, it only rains for about 2 hours, usually about 30 minutes.
Even during the rainy season, people here go out without umbrellas, and when it rains, they take shelter from the rain for a while, which is enough to cool down from the heat of the day in the middle of summer.
In addition, after traveling in Laos for a long time, I thought that the rainy season is better for traveling, and it is a perfect scenery to travel because the mountains, clouds, and wind are very changeable, harmonious, and beautiful than in the dry season.
The total population is about 7 million, the capital city is Vientiane, the gender ratio of men and women is about 4:7, and more than 35% of the total population is children under the age of 15.
The number of children in a family is about 6 or 7, and most of them have more daughters than sons, and the average life expectancy is 58 years, mainly in agricultural culture, and more than 90% of the total population is Buddhist.
However, I think it is necessary to explain the average life expectancy, but if the average life expectancy is 58 years old, it is easy to think that it is short-lived, but when you travel to Laos, it is just an average number, in fact, after infancy.
Since it is easy to see that there are many people who live longer, the death rate of infants under the age of 3 is very high just due to the lack of medicines and medical facilities, and if this part is resolved, the average life expectancy will increase even more.
Also, at this time of the problem, 3 or 4 out of 10 infants died from respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis, beriberi, pneumonia, etc., which are not serious diseases in developed countries, so the average age was 58 years old.
When people began to develop immunity to the environment and diseases, the death rate was like that of general countries, and they often lived longer than 70 or 80 years. When I was traveling,
I have witnessed many elderly people who live longer than 100 years old, and the secret of their longevity is that they are not afraid of death, they are reincarnated into a better world, they have an optimistic personality that believes in religious reincarnation and the idea of relationships, and they do not eat a lot at once.
The supernatural diet that gives the news, and the topography and climate of Laos also have a natural environment suitable for longevity, which is probably why it is said that it is a country like Switzerland in the East (this is also mentioned in the UN Environmental Health Organization’s report on Laos).
Anyway, Laos is a backward country, but it must be a lovely country with a high human happiness index, simple and beautiful, relaxed and happy, just so human charm hidden.
In the meantime, I’m engraved on my footsteps, but I’m having a good time anyway, and I’m just “not knowing that the axe is rotting in the fresh play,” and suddenly I’m worried about “it’s hard to leave home.”
Thinking of the family I left behind, I felt sorry for them, because they seemed to be doing so well, let alone suffering, contrary to their concerns, but I am grateful that I can get such good fortune once in my life.
After all, no news is good news, there is nothing special between us, there is no contact, and I thought that “the interpretation is better than the dream,” and I decided to comfort myself that I was faithful to my duty just because I was walking around so well and healthy.
However, it was a very fragrant day, with a pleasant bewilderment that I never imagined, so I thank you again and end the day by busy chopsticks for a late meal.
나홀로 라오스여행 59째날, 사랑해요 무앙캄!
※오늘은 무앙캄에서 농펱까지, 걸어서 20킬로미터를 갔다.
비로소 며칠 간의 행운의 술독에서 벗어나, 다시 뚜벅이로 돌아와 걷고 있다, 공교롭게도 라오숭의 비마이가 2주전, 금요일에 시작, 토요일과 일요일로 이어 지면서, 명절 끝자락, 다시 라오스 국가 정부수립일에 맞물려, 긴 축제의 연휴가 계속되고 있었다.
이제 ‘무앙캄’의 중심가를 지나면서, 웬 이방인인가 싶은 호기심들이 집중되고 있었는데, 길가에 줄지어 군데군데 모여 앉은 동네사람들은, 역시 그냥 지나치려는 나를 애써 손까지 잡아채며,
‘속디 비마이’, 사바이디 비마이’ (새해 복 많이 받으라는 라오스 말)를 곁들여, 쉬어 가라고 붙잡는 것이었다. 그저 그들의 넘치는 인간애에 감격할 수밖에 없었는데, 내친김에 여기서 잠시 무앙캄의 독특한 지명을 설명해야 할 것 같은데,
무앙은 지명상의 고유명사가 아닌, 한국의 읍 소재지 정도 되는 도시를 지칭하는 말로, 이 도시의 이름은 ‘캄’(금), “금의 도시”를 뜻 하고 있음이었다. 물론 나로선 황금의 도시라는 의미가, 실제 어떤 금을 의미하는 지는 모르겠지만,
짧은 며칠 간에, 그냥 내 마음 그대로를 덧붙여 본다면, 소박함 속에서도 인간애의 소중함이 반짝이며, 마주치는 모두의 정겨운 눈빛들, 비록 작지만 아름다운 금빛 행복을 전해주고 있음에, 말그대로 황금빛 인간애가 넘쳐 흐르는,
언제까지나 잊지 못할 좋은 곳이라고, 무앙캄을 생각 한다는 것이었다. 지금 지나치고 있는 무앙캄의 딸락(시장)에서는 아직 축제가 계속됨을 알리 듯, 커다란 음악소리와 함께 화려한 라오숭족의 물결이 지칠 줄 모르고 출렁이고 있는데,
아무리 갈 길이 멀기만 한 발걸음이었지만, 한사코 축복이 듬뿍 담긴 라오라오(라오스 전통 술)를 아낌없이 건네기에, 성의가 괘씸해서도 뿌리칠 수가 없어, 그저 홀짝홀짝, 너무도 기분 좋게 마실 수밖에 없었는데,
마치 “행복은 성적순이 아니다“는 말을 증명이라도 하고 있는 듯, 뭐라 표현할 수는 없지만, 어쩌면 황홀할 정도가 아니었나 싶었다. 정말 이 기간 중에는 아무리 방문객, 생면부지의 외국인이라고 해도,
이 들은 모든 사람들이 새해 복을 가지고 오는 전령들이라고 믿고, 손님을 잘 대접해야 복을 받을 수 있다는 것을, 몸소 실천하고 있음이었다. 어느새 거듭되는 술잔과 그 향기에 지친 발걸음도 아랑곳없이 휘청거리며,
마냥 세상밖으로 날아가고 있었고, 2킬로미터 정도 남은 게스트하우스까지, 무려 2시간이나 걸리고 있었다. 결국은 어떻게 게스트하우스에 도착했는지조차, 도저히 기억이 나질 않는 것은, 여기서 살짝 필름이 끊어졌던 것이 분명했다.
벌써 며칠째 하늘에서 술 항아리가 뚝 떨어져, 마냥 홀짝홀짝 마시며, 흥얼흥얼 돌아다니고 있었는데, 오늘은 하루 종일, “술 앞에는 황우 장사가 없다”고, 아예 술독에서 헤어나질 못하고, 결국 정신줄을 놓고 말았던 것이었다.
여기가 어딘지, 어떻게 여기서 잠을 자고 있는지, 도무지 생각이 나질 않았다. 그렇게 초저녁 취기에 깜박 빠졌다 깨어보니, 그저 구름 속을 지나 온 기억 밖에는 없었는데, 어쨌든 그래, 이게 사람 사는 행복 일 거야!
기분 좋은 하루였음에는 틀림이 없음이었다. 그래도 다행히, 게스트하우스에 잘 자빠져 있는 걸로 봐선, 크게 실수는 하지 않고 잘 마무리된 것이 아닌가 싶을 뿐인데, 그저 비몽사몽, 왁자지껄 밖에는…
평소 소주 2~3병은 거 뜬, 아직 작은 실수도 용납하지 않는 나였기에, 아마 술에 취하자, 누울 자릴 찾아 얌전히 잠이 들었을 거란, 바램으로 결론을 내렸다. 그런데 이내, 꼬르륵~ 왜? 내 배에서 이상한 신호를 보내는 것일까?
하 하 하 절로 웃음이 나오고 있었다. 부랴부랴 늦은 감은 들었지만, 해장도 할 겸 한끼 때우기 위해 식당을 찾을 수밖에 없었다.
여기서 잠깐, 주문한 음식을 기다리면서, 늦은 감은 들지만, 말이 나온 김에 라오스가 어떤 나라인지 일반적인 설명을 해야 할 것 같은데, 라오스는 1개 특별시와 16개 주로 이루어져 있으며, 각 주는 ‘갱’이라 불리며,
다시 그 갱에는 ‘무앙’(한국의 군소재지 시와 같음)으로 구분되고, 다시 ‘반’(우리나라의 면 소재지와 같음)으로 각각 나누어, 행정 구역으로 설정된, 사회주의 지방자치제 국가이다. 전체 국토의 면적은 우리나라 남북한을 합한 한반도의 1.1배 정도이며,
국토의 70%가 산악지대의 산간지방으로 이루어져, 바다가 없는 인도차이나반도의 한가운데, 열대성 기후대에 위치하면서, 대략 크게 나누어 6개월의 우기와 6개월의 건기를 가지고 있는 국가이다.
특히 건기에는 정말 빗방울조차 구경할 수 없어, 이 기간 중, 비를 만나는 것은 행운이라고 여길 정도이며, 또한 우기에는 주로 밤에만 집중적으로 계속 비가 내리고, 주간에는 길어야 2시간 정도, 보통 30분 정도의 스콜이라는 소낙비만 내려,
이 곳 사람들은 우기에도 우산을 준비하지 않고 외출, 비가 오면 어디서든 잠시 비를 피했다가 가는 것이 일상, 오히려 한여름의 한창 뜨거운 낮의 열기를 식혀 주기에 충분, 실제 우리가 생각하는 우기라는 말이 무색 할 정도이다.
아울러 장기간 라오스를 여행하다 보니, 오히려 우기가 여행하기에 더 좋다는 생각이 들고 있었는데, 건기 보다는 산과 구름과 바람이 매우 변화무쌍, 조화롭고 아름답기 때문에 여행하기에는 더없이 좋은 풍경이란 것이다.
전체 인구는 약 700만 정도이며, 수도는 비엔티엔이고, 전체 남, 여의 성비가 4:7정도로 여자가 많고, 전체 인구의 35%이상이 15세 미만의 아동들로, 실제 여행을 하면서 마을마다 여자들과 아이들이 많음을 볼 수 있었다.
한 가정의 자녀 수도, 대략 6, 7명 정도로, 대부분 아들 보단 딸이 더 많은, 모계중심의 대가족제 집단거주 형태이며, 평균수명은 58세로 농경문화를 중심으로, 전체 인구의 90% 이상이 불교를 신봉하고 있다.
그런데 평균 수명에 대해선, 부연 설명이 필요 할 것 같은데, 평균 수명이 58세라면 당연 단명하는 것으로 생각 하기 쉬운데, 실제 라오스를 여행해 보면, 그것은 평균 수치일 뿐, 사실상 유아기만 지나면,
장수하는 사람들도 많음을 쉽게 볼 수 있음이기에, 단지 의약품과 의료시설의 부족 등으로, 3세 미만의 영유아 사망 율이 대단히 높다는 것이 문제의 요인, 이부분만 해소된다면, 얼마든지 평균수명은 훨씬 늘어남을 알 수 있음이었다.
또한 이 문제의 시기에, 유아 10명 중 3, 4명이, 선진국에서는 심각한 병이라고 할 수도 없는, 결핵, 각기, 폐렴, 등의 호흡기 질병으로 인해 사망하는데 따른, 평균 연령을 산출하였기에, 58세로 나타난 것 뿐. 보통 10세를 전후해서,
환경과 질병 등에 면역이 생기기 시작 하면서부터는, 특별한 사고 등이 없는 한, 일반적인 국가들의 사망률과 비슷해 지면서, 보통 70, 80새 이상 장수를 하는 경우가 많다는 것이었다. 실제 내가 여행 중,
100세 이상 장수하는 노인들을 많이 목격했는데, 더 더욱 이들의 장수의 비결은, 죽음에 대해 두려워하지 않고, 더 좋은 세상으로의 환생한다는, 종교적 윤회와 인연사상을 믿는 낙천적 성격과, 한꺼번에 많이 먹지 않는
소식을 하는 초자연적 식생활 등, 그리고 라오스의 지형과 기후까지 장수에 적합한 천연환경을 가지고 있음인데, 아마 그래서 동양의 스위스와 같은 나라(이 내용은 유엔의 환경보건기구의 라오스에 대한 보고서 내용에도 나온다) 라는 말이,
붙여 진 듯 싶었다. 어쨌든 라오스는 후진국이지만 소박하고 아름다운, 없지만 여유롭고, 없지만 행복한, 그저 너무나 인간적인 매력이 감춰진, 인간 행복지수가 높은 사랑스러운 나라임에는 틀림없음 이었다.
그렇게 은연 중, 내가 걷고 있는 나의 발걸음 위에 새겨주고 있음인데, 어쨌거나 즐거운 나날들을 잘 보내고 있어, 그저 “신선 놀음에 도끼자루 썩는 줄 모르고 있기만” 한데, 문득 “집 떠나면 고생” 이라고 내 걱정을 하고 있을,
두고 온 가족들이 생각나면서, 가족들의 우려와는 달리, 고생은 커녕 너무나 잘 지내고 있는 것 같아, 미안한 마음이 들기도 했는데, 하지만 살다 보면 이런 행운도 한 번씩 얻을 수 있음에 감사드리며,
역시 무소식이 희소식, 쌍방 별일 없으니, 연락이 없음이라고, “꿈보다 해몽이 좋다”는 생각을 해보며, 오히려 이렇게, 건강하게 잘 돌아다니고 있음 만으로도, 나에 의무에 충실함이라고 애써 위로하기로 했다.
다만 오늘만큼은 정말 상상도 못했던 기분 좋은 어리둥절함까지, 너무나 향기롭기 만한 하루였음에, 다시한번 감사드리며, 늦은 식사에 바쁜 젓가락질을 하면서, 오늘을 마무리 해 본다.
