The 52nd Day of My Solo Trip to Laos, Love, Peace, War and Freedom

Today, I walked 25 kilometers from Viengsai to Samrua.

It was just a passing relationship, but in the few days that I was just wondering what he was like, the warm hot spring water, the cold beer, and the care of a comfortable car, I was able to relax happily and comfortably, soaking in humanity at night.

So, the morning in Vieng Sai was fresher and more refreshing. I replaced breakfast with a cup of fragrant Lao mixed coffee and headed to the places I really wanted to visit, as if I were taking a short walk, and looked around at Yomojomo between flights.

Entering the back of the village, we arrived at the place where the first and best bridgehead of the Communist Revolutionary Army in Laos was located during the Vietnam War about 30 years ago, and there are still traces of the scars of that war in many places.

So, although it was a place far away from the main road, I couldn’t just pass by it, and it was here that I came to it from the beginning, and from the outside, it was just ordinary scenery in a small and peaceful mountain village.

In fact, it is a military facility built in a beautiful pomegranate cave, large and small, and it served as the cradle of the Lao Revolutionary Army during the Vietnam War more than 50 years ago, until today’s Lao People’s Republic exists.

It was a place of history that was imbued with ideology and meaning for the Lao people.

Nestled deep in the mountains, surrounded by the mountains of concubines on a rugged terrain at an altitude of more than 2.000 meters, Biengsai had a topographical feature with literally no fortifications.

It is also known that the U.S. military at that time launched a large-scale aerial bombardment every day, but it did not achieve much success because the natural features were like an iron fortress.

I thought it would be perfect for the location of the Supreme Headquarters of the Revolutionary Army, but there were about six such facilities in a similar shape at some distance, so the approximate size and shape of the underground and above ground was enough for at least 10,000 people to be stationed.

Today, there is an administrative office in the center of such a scattered area, and if you pay an entrance fee here, you can follow an English-speaking guide and listen to a detailed explanation of the situation at that time.

You can see all the caves in set order, but the entrance to the cave, which is exquisitely concealed, was completely invisible even after washing my eyes, and I wondered if such a facility really existed here.

After going through the forest and turning around between the large rocks, I was able to see the entrance to the cave only when I got closer, and what was even more surprising was that inside each cave, there was a large and small operation room, an office, an ammunition depot, an armory depot, and a quarter of the commander.

From a large plaza that could be used as a venue for people’s trials, performances, and banquets, to special accommodations for outsiders and shelters, it was built and preserved on a huge scale in a dense natural limestone cave using the original structure between stalactites.

Various facilities that could hardly be called in a cave attracted attention, and it was equipped with various lighting, gas exhausts, heating facilities, and water and sewage systems, including self-generators, which showed that they were prepared for a long-term war such as large-scale bombing as well as chemical discharge.

To go from the first underground cave to the second and third caves, I had to come out to the surface for a while, but the dense forest itself was like a camouflage film, among the traces of large shells in the hollows that remained.

I went back into the cave and climbed to the highest observation deck in the vicinity, where the anti-aircraft guns and submachine guns used at that time were still on display.

After looking down at the surroundings for a while, I could hear the loud sound of bombers and anti-aircraft guns of that day, and the foggy rain was falling beneath my feet today, and the appearance of Viengsai was slowly revealing, and the atmosphere was solemn.

Perhaps in the old days, I was in a fantasy of myself in the smoke of gunpowder, and somehow, I couldn’t help but feel like I was in the middle of a war, and the guide’s explanation continued, like a scene from a movie.

Finally, towards the end of the Vietnam War, the power of the revolutionary army continued to expand, and as the troops grew to the corps level, the supreme headquarters continued to expand and move from present-day Samrua, to Xieng Khang in the south, and then to the capital Vientiane.

The Lao Revolution, which began in this cave and ended with the victory of the revolutionary army after several years of bloody struggle, finally succeeded in communizing Laos, and Biengsai proved to be the place that laid the foundation for the revolution.

At that time, on the long table in the Supreme Operations Conference Room in the cave, there were 7~8 photos of the Communist Party’s booklets and portraits, and it turned out that the protagonists of the photos were all the presidents of Laos up to the present.

All of them were real comrades of the revolutionary army in the six caves in the region at that time, and after the war, they served as the first presidents one after another, leading to what is now Laos. I could only guess the role of this place at that time,

On the way back from the tour, I wondered on the other hand, on the other hand, war, for what and whose war it is, because of the ideology and ideology of freedom and peace, people kill people, they make bloody heroes,

It was undeniable that the tear-stained separation was repeated, recorded as a painful story, and that the fabrication of pretexts was repeated with sadness, simply wrapping everything in the disgrace of the victors, leading to another war as a matter of course.

It was bittersweet because it was ironic about what was right and wrong. Anyway, after finishing the tour, I had no choice but to return to my original posture and head to today’s destination, Samrua, but for some reason, I trudged over a heavy step.

Above all, as a foreign correspondent, I have traveled to many wars and conflict zones, and personally, if I kill someone for any reason, I become a murderer or an unscrupulous criminal.

In war, you must kill people brutally and at all costs, but you become a hero, and I suddenly remembered that at the end of the Middle East war, I met an American soldier who was participating in the war and interviewed him, and I asked, “Why do you go to war?”

I remember that the soldier had replied with words of great tragedy. “Why me? Why am I here at war? But “I have no choice but to stay here because I’m a soldier,” and “My comrade died here,

I only fight to survive in this war” and “So I just kill my enemies.” It was a horrifying remark even when I thought about it again.

In fact, I also had memories of losing a comrade in arms during my military career as a special force’s commander in the past, so I couldn’t help but have mixed feelings, but the nameless soldiers who died in glory that were only scarred by the rulers for reasons such as ideology, ideology, and religion,

When we look at the children who died of starvation and disease, driven into the pain and screams of war without knowing anything, what can we gain by risking the one and only human life, which is the most precious of all?

How many lives and victories had to be exchanged, true freedom? Looking back, in the miserable world history of our humanity, which is only bloody,

In other words, the end of human greed is always decorated with war and shortened into the history of the victors, and for ordinary people who are busy eating and living, the war is only remembered as a complete tragedy with no winners or losers.

No matter how much I thought about it, I was sure that the tragedy of war could not be justified for any reason, and that no more war should be tolerated for any reason.

Why should I go to war for whom, why should I struggle desperately to survive, even killing others I don’t know at all, just for reasons I don’t understand?

Once again, we need to remind ourselves that we need to think more soberly about war, which is full of questions about why. It means that we should think about the difference between human beings and animals, and even more so that we can live together and love each other.

Why do we have to make such an extreme choice, what is the problem? Ideology and ideology? Development of civilization? And we must think about the tireless greed of human beings, and it is true that all of them make human beings proud of their sense of accomplishment for a while.

As time goes by, all of them slowly make people sick, and eventually they rationalize looting, assault, murder, arson, etc., so we have no choice but to think that we are killing everyone, so we have lived well without anything.

We must keep in mind that there should be no war for any reason on the premise that we can live well without anything, but there is still no end to wars with science and civilization in many parts of the world.

I am living in such a painful reality where destruction and killing are being perpetrated at one point or another, wandering through the authority of land grabbing, religions that do not know how to cut down heresy, and ideological ideas that are only greedy.  Driven by power and financial brainwashing that does not know the truth,

Have I become numb, or have I been living at the end of less than a hundred years, rationalizing myself by saying that I am not, that I do not know?

However, if we find a peaceful solution even now, we will protect our homeland to which everyone will return anyway, and we will just take learning and art as a hobby based on unspoiled labor and unconditional love, which are still left as members of nature.

I just had to pursue the happiness of a small drop of sweat, have a pure heart, and    reverently accept the responsibilities and obligations given to each person!

It was clear that human beings had lived like that, and Laos was proving it to me, so I always believed that the world did not ask for anything, and that it was always with me, just as I was going to find myself.
